Lulu insists she has always been very a 'private' person she reflects on childhood 'shame'
Lulu has always been a "very private" person.
The 76-year-old singer shot to fame as a teenager in the 1960s with her now-signature song Shout but insisted that "nobody knows" who she really is because she has always been "very careful" when it comes to choosing what she reveals about herself.
Speaking on BBC's The One Show, she said: "A friend of mine once said to me 'People think they know Lulu, but nobody knows you...' and I think it's partly to do with the fact that I come from a Scottish mother who said 'Don't wash your dirty linen in public!'
"So I was very...I've always been very careful, very private. I'm chatty, but I keep a lot of things to myself, so now I'm talking about everything."
The Eurovision star is heading out on tour across the UK in October to discuss her life, and explained that she has only decided to do so now because she comes from a generation where there was "a lot of shame" associated with talking about issues but things have since changed.
She said: "This is mainly because the landscape has changed. When I was young, when my mother was young, you didn't talk [about things]. Everything was a secret, and there was a lot of shame because you didn't talk about stuff but today talk about things and I think it's healthier. Some overshare, but hopefully I won't! All the ups and downs I've had - and I've had a life, let's put it like that - I've had an amazing, amazing life but I've also had certain things in my life that I've never discussed.
"When I go on stage, on my tour, I'm gonna have very special people ask questions on stage about my life, and I'm gonna reveal stuff, how I've come through certain things.
"Maybe people can relate to it, and if I've managed to come through it, maybe it will help someone else. That's the way it is today and it is so much healthier."

Glastonbury headliner Loyle Carner will read a CBeebies Bedtime Story on Monday evening (23.06.25). The 30-year-old poetic hip-hop star is due to top the bill on The Other Stage at Worthy Farm on Friday (27.06.25), as part of a Glasto special edition of the nightly programme on the BBC's CBeebies channel where a different celebrity reads a children's picture book just before bedtime, and Carner has chosen I Touched the Sun by Leah Hayes. He said: 'Let's go! I've practised for this every night in my son's room. 'Reading a CBeebies Bedtime Story is just a magical thing to do. I know this story inside out - it's my favourite book, and my son's and my daughter's. We read it almost every night.' Loyle's Bedtime Story airs at 6.50pm on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer, kicking off a special week of CBeebies Bedtime Stories recorded at Glastonbury Festival. Starting Friday (27.06.26), there are brand new stories from Worthy Farm, with surprise celebrity readers to be revealed on CBeebies' social media channels. Carner's Glasto set comes a week after he released his latest LP, hopefully !. BBC newsreader Martine Croxall corrects ‘pregnant people' to ‘women' in viral autocue moment
Author JK Rowling has praised BBC newsreader Martine Croxall after she refused to refer to 'pregnant people' live on air. The Harry Potter writer, 59, joked that she had a 'new favourite BBC presenter' after Croxall overruled her autocue which referred to 'pregnant people' being at risk during the recent hot weather. Rowling has been a prominent women's rights campaigner and has often been vocal on what she calls 'sex-based rights' for several years. In the clip from a recent BBC News show, Croxall introduces comments from new research about the number of heat-related deaths expected during the ongoing hot weather period. However, as she reads along the autocue, she raises an eyebrow and smirks at the camera after having to say 'pregnant people' could be at risk in the heat. She then quickly overrides this, saying 'women' instead, before moving on with the rest of the script. 'Malcolm Mistry, who was involved in the research, said the aged, pregnant people — women! — and those with pre-existing health conditions need to take precautions,' Croxall reads. Reposting the clip on X, Rowling praised the BBC presenter, saying she was her 'new favourite'. Samantha Barks welcomes a daughter
Samantha Barks has welcomed her second child with her husband Alex Stoll. The Les Miserables star, 34, took to Instagram on Sunday (22.06.25) to confirm the she's has given birth to a daughter named felicity, who joins the couple's son Raphael, who was born in 2023. Sharing a picture of herself cuddling her new baby on Instagram, Samantha wrote: "Hello Felicity." Samantha went public with her pregnancy news back in May during an interview with the BBC as she prepared for the VE Day 80th Anniversary concert in London. She said: "The dress is being steamed, the hair and make-up is ready ... [I'm] nearly nine months pregnant so it's going to be me and baby performing for royalty tonight so it's her first adventure." Samantha and Alex married in Tuscany, Italy, in June 2022 and the actress previously admitted she felt "drunk in love" on her big day. She gushed to Britain's OK! magazine: "It was everything we could ever hope for, and so much more. You plan every intricate detail of a wedding and hope it all happens the way it's supposed to, and it did. "There was nothing I would change from the day, it all went perfectly and smoothly, but what you can't prepare yourself for is everyone you love being there and celebrating with you, and the atmosphere of that. She wrote: "Welcome Rafael Richard Barks-Stoll, born on 16th October. My heart could burst with happiness." It's been a huge year so far for Samantha as she was recently seen in the UK version of The Masked Singer, which she won in January. Speaking after her TV triumph, the singer gushed: "You know what this has been the most fun experience. "I've loved this whole secret spy life and I can't believe it's over and I can't believe I won?"
