Vishnu Manchu Exclusive Interview: 'I think it is Lord Shiva who chose Akshay Kumar to play this character in Kannappa'

Pink Villa6 days ago

Vishnu Manchu is gearing up for the release of his ambitious film Kannappa, that co-stars Preity Mukhundhan, Akshay Kumar, Prabhas, Mohanlal, Kajal Agarwal and a host of other actors. The movie is up for release on 27th June, 2025, and it releases in multiple Indian languages. Vishnu, along with Akshay Kumar, graced Pinkvilla with an interview of theirs, ahead of the release of their fantasy-actioner with a devotional touch.
In the interview, Vishnu Manchu was first asked about how he got the idea to cast Akshay Kumar in the role of Lord Shiva. The Dhee star answered, "For me, when I started writing the script, for me, the only vision that I had was of Mr Akshay Kumar; Who would look like Lord Shiva? Mr Akshay Kumar. His face features, or the way he conducts himself, and the way he looks!".

He continued, "I did have a lot of people ask me if I am sure about Mr Akshay Kumar. I said that he's the only man I can think of. But spiritually speaking, I think it is Lord Shiva who chose him to play this character and not me. I could only propose. I got the approval from Lord Shiva".
Talking about playing devotional characters, Vishnu said, "It's not that easy to play roles of gods. In the Hindi Film Industry, it is lesser. But in the south, in lot of languages, we make a lot of movies on Ramayana or Mahabharata or other devotional movies. I feel you have to be destined to play certain characters. As much as I am destined to play Kannappa, it was Lord Shiva's blessings that he (Akshay Kumar) had to play Lord Shiva".
In his concluding remarks, Vishnu Manchu said that for the current generation, if anyone has to think of Lord Shiva, it has to be Mr Akshay Kumar.
Adding to what Vishnu told, Akshay Kumar said, "To be chosen to play this, I feel very lucky about it. I feel very empowered. It doesn't happen to many people. To play Lord Krishna or Lord Shiva; And the movie is also working. That is the big thing. I say to myself that I am one of the most luckiest person".
Kannappa hits theatres on the 27th of June, 2025. It releases alongside Maa and F1. It is to be seen how Kannappa plays amidst the stiff competition that it faces.
Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates on Akshay Kumar, Vishnu Manchu and their film Kannappa.

Sitaare Zameen Par box office collection day 3: Aamir Khan's film earns Rs 60.1 cr, set to surpass Laal Singh Chaddha's lifetime; outperforms Jaat, Kesari 2, Sikandar

Sitaare Zameen Par box office day 3: After a shaky start, Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par has quickly redeemed itself over its first weekend. According to Sacnilk, the film minted Rs 29.22 crore on Sunday, bringing its total domestic collection to Rs 60.12 crore within just three days of release. Sitaare Zameen Par box office collection and occupancy The Aamir Khan-starrer began its box office journey with Rs 10.7 crore — a little underwhelming, especially when compared to the year's biggest hit Chhaava, which raked in Rs 31 crore on its opening day. Despite the lukewarm start, Sitaare Zameen Par saw an impressive 88.79 percent jump in collections on Saturday, earning Rs 20.2 crore. The upward trend continued on Sunday, with a further 44.65 percent increase, as the film raked in Rs 29.22 crore. The film is getting a solid word-of-mouth from audience after receiving positive reviews from critics. While the film has been released in multiple languages — Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu — the core audience remains in the Hindi belt. On Sunday, the film earned Rs 29 crore from the Hindi version, while the Tamil version contributed Rs 17 lakh and the Telugu version a modest Rs 5 lakh to the domestic collection. It saw 50.70 percent Hindi occupancy, 41.59 percent Tamil occupancy and 21.92 percent Telugu occupancy on Sunday. Sitaare Zameen Par box office vs 2025's biggest hits Overall, Sitaare Zameen Par has collected Rs 49.42 crore over Saturday and Sunday — less than Chhaava's Rs 85 crore and Housefull 5's Rs 63.5 crore during the same period. However, Aamir's film has fared better than many other big 2025 releases. However, Sitaare Zameen Par's performance stands out as the film is not a tentpole, which has become de rigueur for post-pandemic theatrical releases. Instead, Aamir brings forth a heartwarming story with a largely new cast of neurodivergent actors with a message. For instance, Raid 2 minted Rs 30 crore, Sikandar earned Rs 30 crore on its first Saturday and Sunday, Kesari Chapter 2 collected Rs 22.75 crore, and Sunny Deol's Jaat pulled in Rs 23.75 crore on their respective opening weekends. Sitaare Zameen Par box office vs Aamir Khan's previous releases Aamir Khan's last film, Laal Singh Chaddha (2022), was a major box office disappointment, minting a total of Rs 61.36 crore in domestic collection in its lifetime. Sitaare Zameen Par has already raked in Rs 60.12 crore in just three days and is poised to surpass Laal Singh Chaddha's lifetime domestic earnings very soon. Prior to that, Aamir's 2018 release Thugs of Hindostan also underperformed. It collected Rs 41.5 crore over its first weekend — lower than Sitaare Zameen Par's Rs 49.42 crore. Despite a massive budget of Rs 300 crore, Thugs of Hindostan could only manage Rs 133 crore in total domestic revenue. Aamir's 2017 release Secret Superstar also saw moderate success, with a lifetime domestic collection of Rs 81.28 crore. Given the current trajectory, Sitaare Zameen Par is expected to surpass this number within five days of release. Aamir's last massive hit remains 2016's Dangal, which earned a staggering Rs 387.38 crore in domestic collections. Dangal had minted Rs 77.23 crore over its first weekend, significantly higher than Sitaare Zameen Par's Rs 49.42 crore. Apart from Aamir, Sitaare Zameen Par also stars Genelia Deshmukh and is directed by RS Prasanna.

When Yash Chopra opened up about the real-life drama behind ‘Silsila': ‘Jaya is his wife, Rekha his GF'

Few films in Indian cinema have blurred the lines between reel and reality, quite like Yash Chopra 's Silsila (1981). The film, starring Amitabh Bachchan , Jaya Bachchan , and Rekha , was not only a cinematic love triangle—it was a mirror reflecting one of Bollywood's most talked-about off-screen relationships. Rumours only intensified after an interview with the BBC in 2010, when the late Yash Chopra openly referred to Rekha as Amitabh's 'girlfriend' and Jaya as his wife—both on and off screen. Yash Chopra on Shooting Silsila Chopra candidly admitted that making Silsila felt like walking a tightrope. 'I was always on tenterhooks and scared because it was real life coming into reel life,' he said. With Amitabh married to Jaya in real life and linked romantically to Rekha, the film's casting was as controversial as it was bold. The filmmaker acknowledged that anything could have happened during the shoot, adding, 'They are working together… Jaya is his wife and Rekha is his girlfriend—the same story is going on in real life. ' Reel Romance, Real Reactions Following the BBC interview's broadcast, speculations erupted that Bachchan was upset by Chopra's revelations. However, the BBC Asian Network denied any complaints from the actor's side. The story of Silsila—both on-screen and behind the scenes—has since become part of Bollywood lore. Though the film may not have been a blockbuster in 1981, it enjoys cult status today, celebrated for its soulful music, emotional complexity, and the unforgettable pairing of Rekha and Amitabh—for the last time.
