KCCI chair meets Japan PM, calls for closer trade ties
Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Chey Tae-won, who also heads SK Group, met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Tuesday in Tokyo, calling for close economic cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting came as Seoul and Tokyo mark the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations, according to the KCCI. Chey was joined by Park Il-joon, executive vice chairman of KCCI and Lee Hyung-hee, vice chairman of Seoul Chamber of Commerce and Industry and president of SK Supex Council.
'At a time when both Korea and Japan are facing difficulties due to the spread of global protectionism, including reciprocal tariffs from the US, there is a need for the two countries to deepen bilateral economic cooperation,' Chey was quoted as saying to Ishiba, requesting the Japanese government's support and attention for corporate activities for both countries.
Chey also asked for Ishiba's interest in the upcoming APEC CEO Summit to be held in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, in October, hosted by KCCI. He also requested participation from leading Japanese companies.
Following the meeting with Ishiba, Chey visited the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he met with Chairman Ken Kobayashi. The visit was Chey's first to the JCCI in three years, with discussions centering on the upcoming bilateral chamber meeting and ways to enhance collaboration between the two organizations.
The 14th chairs' meeting of the KCCI and JCCI is expected to take place in South Korea later this year.
Chey is also expected to attend the 30th Nikkei Forum on the Future of Asia from Thursday to Friday. Last year, he participated as a speaker and stressed the importance of Korea-Japan cooperation.

Eximbank holds workshop to strengthen Korea-Africa ties
The 30th Economic Development Cooperation Fund Workshop, hosted by the Export-Import Bank of Korea and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, commenced Tuesday, welcoming a total of 18 government officials from 10 African countries, according to the policy lender on Sunday. The EDCF is an aid loan funded by the Korean government, which offers long-term loans at a low interest rate to developing countries under an official development assistance initiative. Eximbank is in charge of running the fund. Through its annual workshop, the state-run lender invites public officials from the recipient countries, strengthening partnerships for the smooth operation of the financing aid. This year's workshop is a follow-up event to the first Korea-Africa summit held in Seoul last June, under the theme "The Future We Make Together: Shared Growth, Sustainability, and Solidarity." The 10 participating countries include Angola, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. 'The workshop provides an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of EDCF's support strategy and cooperation plans for (countries in) Africa,' Dereje Wodajeneh, head of the bilateral cooperation department at Ethiopia's Ministry of Finance, said. 'It will serve as a stepping stone for strengthening exchanges and cooperation between EDCF and the African continent.' According to Eximbank, African countries account for roughly 25 percent of the total support volume for the EDCF. 'We plan to continue enhancing strategic support and cooperation with Africa, focusing on key areas such as energy transition, digital transformation and supply chain,' an official from the Eximbank said. Through the week-long event, which includes visits to the headquarters of Korea Railroad Corp. and the Global Knowledge Exchange and Development Center, the participating public officials are to broaden their understanding of Korea's official development assistance policy and the EDCF. The workshop is set to end on Wednesday.

President Lee to post social media messages in both Korean, foreign languages to 'show respect'
President Lee Jae Myung will post diplomatic messages on social media in both Korean and the language of his counterpart, his office said Saturday. Before traveling to Canada for the Group of Seven summit in Canada earlier this week, Lee had ordered his staff to write social media posts in both Korean and foreign languages to "show our diplomatic respect and willingness to communicate," according to the office. Lee had also told his staff that his messages must reach South Korean residents living abroad and local citizens of those counterpart countries, his office said. On Lee's X page, an update on his summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba was written in both Korean and Japanese on Wednesday. On the same day, an X post detailing Lee's meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was uploaded in Korean and English. And a summary of Lee's talks with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was provided in Korean and Spanish. The presidential office said Lee's social media posts will continue to be provided in multiple languages when detailing his overseas trips and meetings with other heads of state. "This will not be a temporary measure for only certain countries. It's part of the president's digital diplomatic strategy based on his philosophy on government administration," it said. "We hope his social media messages will help create a bond between peoples of different countries and serve as the starting point of diplomacy based on mutual respect." (Yonhap)
