RCB aim for first IPL title with 'more balanced' squad

BBC News17-03-2025

Royal Challengers Bengaluru head coach Andy Flower says his squad is "more balanced" than previous editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which he hopes will deliver the franchise's first men's title.Flower took charge of RCB in 2023 and they reached the play-offs in 2024 before defeat by Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator. The former England coach told the BBC Stumped podcast that their recruitment for 2025 shifted from RCB's usual batting-heavy strategy."We retained three players from last year. Instead of going for pace [bowlers], we're going for experience and skill, and if we put together a good tactical game I think we can not only defend but attack wisely at the Chinnaswamy and other grounds," Flower said."We've got some really good balance in our squad, good power in the batting line-up and real skill and experience in the bowling line-up, which is a little bit of a change for RCB. "Usually they prioritise their batting line-up with some big batting stars and we've shifted that to what we think is a more balanced team this year." RCB's bowling attack includes Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood and India fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, while England batter Phil Salt and all-rounders Liam Livingstone and Jacob Bethell are also in the squad.India batter Rajat Patidar has been named as captain in another significant change for the side, and Flower added that Virat Kohli - who led the side between 2013-2021 - remains a key part of the leadership set-up."Rajat has got all that experience to call on from Virat, and Virat's a big supporter of him, so rather than describing it as a shadow, I feel it's a ballast that can support us. "Rajat has been an outstanding batsman for us, particularly last year, but he's done some special things for RCB prior to that. He's very calm, he's very decisive as a leader."Listen to the full interview with Andy Flower on the Stumped podcast on BBC Sounds.

England fans are left worried Jofra Archer is injured AGAIN ahead of his red ball return - before national side step in to clarify bizarre Sussex move

Jofra Archer will make his long-awaited red-ball return on Sunday – not that his county wanted anyone to know. Sussex on Saturday named a 12-man squad for their County Championship match in Durham, with Archer mysteriously missing from the list. Given England selector Luke Wright had said earlier this month that the pace bowler was set to make his comeback from injury at Chester-le-Street, there were fears he had broken down again. However, England chiefs quickly clarified that the squad Sussex published on their website was wrong – and that Archer will indeed don whites for the first time in four years today. Mail Sport understands Sussex had bizarrely left the 2019 World Cup winner off their list because they were trying to avoid extra media attention on his return. The 30-year-old has not played any first-class cricket since Sussex's County Championship clash with Kent in May 2021, a match he did not finish after injuring his right elbow. Archer's last Test came in India earlier that year, while he has not featured in a home England Test since 2020. The Barbados-born star most recently played competitive cricket for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL in May, but his tournament was cut short after he suffered a thumb injury. If Archer comes through this County Championship match unscathed, he could be available for England's second Test against India at Edgbaston, starting on July 2. England are desperate to have Archer back fit ahead of this winter's Ashes, especially with the limitations of their current pace attack being exposed in India's first innings of the series at Headingley.

India boast best bowler in history, warns former England captain

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes India have the greatest bowler of all-time at their disposal in Jasprit Bumrah. The first of five Tests between the two countries begins on Friday at Headingley in what should be a thoroughly entertaining and engaging series. Bumrah is not expected to play in all five matches and is likely to compete in just three games in an attempt to maintain his fitness, but Vaughan fears his influence when he is on the pitch. The 50-year-old claimed on The Overlap and Betfair's Stick to Cricket show that Bumrah has become the best bowler ever thanks to his success with India across all three formats, and he is sticking to that opinion. 'Yeah, I've never seen anyone bowl with such an action,' he told Metro. 'With so much pace, with so much accuracy, so much movement, so much skill, so much thought and across all the formats of the game. Yeah, I think he's the best I've seen. 'I know there are bowlers from the past that I've never even seen other than clips on YouTube, but from my time being a pro from '92 to being a broadcaster now in 2025, he's the best I've seen. 'He's got that release which is closer. So, he obviously seems that little bit quicker, because he is quick, but also because he releases it that little bit later. He's a genius.' The 31-year-old boasts incredible figures for his country in an international career which began in January 2016. He arrives in England this summer with 205 Test wickets to his name from 45 matches at an average of 19.40. With the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Vaughan sees an inexperienced batting line-up, but feels Bumrah is still good enough to bowl his team to victory. The Yorkshireman also notes that even India's inexperienced Test batters have overcome the wildly pressurised environment of the IPL, so should not be written off as being able to deal with the English attack, which will be missing the likes of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood in Leeds. Jasprit Bumrah Shane Warne Muttiah Muralitharan Glenn McGrath Dale Steyn* * Vaughan added: 'I'll have to put Dale Steyn in there because he used to knock my off stump flying on a regular basis.' 'Don't rule out this Indian side because the England bowling is inexperienced,' said Vaughan. 'The Indian batting is inexperienced, but they've got so much talent. And how much worth do you put on the experience of the pressure that they cope with in the IPL? 'Sai Sudharsan is just dominating the IPL once again. Karun Nair is a regular run-scorer. All these players are so flamboyant and know how to deal with the pressure. 'I guess if the Duke ball moves around, they'll struggle, but if it's a few weeks of dryness and the ball doesn't do a great deal, Jaspit Bumrah might be the key.' Vaughan makes England favourites to win the series against India in what is a huge year for Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes as leaders of the team. Following the series with India this summer is an Ashes campaign in Australia over the winter and Vaughan feels the Test team now have the chance to prove that their thrill-seeking game plan, indulged in risk, has both substance and style. 'The Test team have been fantastic to watch, brilliant,' he said. 'But they haven't won an Ashes and they've not got to a World Test Championship final. 'I guess if they don't do that, you'd argue that playing the expansive way has been royally entertaining, but didn't get the cherries at the end of it. 'This year gives them an opportunity to get some nice silverware. That's what you want. 'If you can win things by playing entertainingly, it's the right way to play. and entertain the crowd, be expansive, but I don't think you can be expansive all the time.' It would be remarkable to drop Ollie Pope after 171

Jacob Bethell is pushing hard for a place in the red-ball side as he continues his sharp ascent through the ranks but while he was at the Indian Premier League last month, Pope firmed up his spot at number three with a knock of 171 against Zimbabwe. If there were ever any doubts over him holding on to his shirt, that innings at Trent Bridge extinguished them and he remains the man in possession heading into a huge five-match series that begins on Friday at Headingley. Stokes, who has been steadfast in his support for Pope, said: 'The 'big selection' (idea) did not come from us. It would be remarkable to choose someone else if their last knock was a 170, and that's pretty much all I need to say on that. 'Scoring 170 definitely doesn't do anyone any harm, but having him at number three since I've been captain over a three-year period, averaging over 40, it speaks for itself.' The presence of Bethell, who deputised impressively in New Zealand before Christmas and turned in some highly accomplished performances in the recent white-ball games against the West Indies, means there is at least an element of added pressure on Pope to continue producing. Stokes acknowledges the noise is growing but is relaxed about Pope's ability to navigate it. 'In this day and age it's very tough not to see all that speculation, just because of how easily accessible things are. You don't even have to go and hunt for it,' he said. 'But I think scoring 170 in his last Test match has sort of shown how well he's handled that extra scrutiny. 'When you're a kid you dream about playing for England and obviously it's an unbelievable thing, but then the other side of it is that you come under the pump a little bit and that's part of the territory.' This week's trip to Yorkshire marks the start of a new World Test Championship cycle, a matter of days after South Africa triumphed over Australia in the final at Lord's. Stokes has been a long-time sceptic of the tournament's uneven design, branding it 'utterly confusing', and his side will once again play the most Tests over the next two years. Long-form series against both India and Australia over the next seven months mean it will once again be an uphill task but he is focusing on day-to-day business in the hope the wider goal falls into place. 'If we win enough games of cricket, then we'll find ourselves there at the final at the World Test Championship,' he said. The two most capped players in Test cricket history… Now with their very own trophy 😍🏆 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 19, 2025 'I think that's probably a better way of saying that we don't focus on it. We focus on every game that we have in front of us, on the series that we have in front of us, and if we win games of cricket, we will find ourselves at the World Test Championship final. If we do get there, then we'll look to win that.' Meanwhile, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed this summer's victors would win the newly minted Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, named in honour of the nations' record wicket-taker and record run-scorers respectively. 'It's a proud moment for me and my family to have this iconic series named after Sachin and myself,' said James Anderson. 'The rivalry between our two nations has always been something special, full of history, intensity and unforgettable moments. To be recognised in this way is a real honour. I'm looking forward to seeing the next chapter unfold in England this summer.'
