GAA club fury after charity bin looted in broad daylight
A GAA club in Monaghan have shared their disappointment after empty bottles and cans intended for fundraising were stolen from their premises.
Éire Óg GAA club in Smithborough had been collecting recyclable containers through the Re-Turn scheme, with all proceeds earmarked for their juvenile teams.

However, on Thursday, June 5th at around 1pm, those efforts were undermined when the bins were emptied in what the club has described as a deliberate theft.
In a statement, the club said: 'We were deeply disappointed to discover the theft of our bottle return bins, which were part of a fundraising drive to support our juvenile teams. 'The bins were clearly marked and placed throughout our grounds to collect recyclable bottles, with all funds going directly to the juvenile fund.'
Footage from the club's CCTV system shows a man using a key to open the bins and load the contents into his car. The estimated value of the stolen containers is around €200. The club to social media to ask for help in identifying the man. Pic: Éire Óg Na Mullai
Sharing the video on social media, the club wrote: 'A few weeks ago, we installed four bottle return bins to help raise much-needed funds for our juveniles.
'Unfortunately, as seen in the video, this gentleman decided he was entitled to help himself. If anyone recognises him, please message the page – he owes us a donation.'

None of the background facts were opened in court but previous courts have heard how three masked men entered a number of licensed premises in Dungiven on 19 January 2024. Michael Conwell According to the police case, Michael Conwell 'leads the charge' with the firearm in his left hand as the trio of masked terrorists visited four pubs and St. Candice's GAA club over the course of an hour between 7-8pm. The gang declared to patrons during their 30 second visits: 'we are New IRA, we are here to clean up the bars, if you don't clean up the bars we are going to do it - the bars are full of drugs.' Dermot Burke Previous courts have heard how detectives had obtained CCTV footage from the various premises, and data from a Ford car connected to Michael Conwell, which suggests the Ford car met up with a white Citreon van in the car park of Owenbeg GAA on the Foreglen Road in Dungiven. That van was then used to transport the masked terrorists to each of the pubs, as well as St. Candice's GAA club. Police believe the registration plate of the van had been 'doctored with black tape' but that in actuality, the van belongs to Burke's employers and he regularly drives it. There was also evidence obtained by police which connected Michael Conwell to his mother's white motability Ford Ecosport car and also that a mobile attributable to him had been in contact on numerous occasions both before and after the incident, with Burke's mobile number. Michael Conwell and Dermot Burke News in 90 Seconds - June 18th The court heard that while the mobile phones of both Burke and Conwell show no activity during the hour while the masked terrorists make their intimidatory pub crawl, suggesting they had been switched off, Michael Conwell's Ford ecosport has a built in SIM card. A detective told the court that within 24 hours of Burke being arrested, someone had tried to perform a 'factory reset' on the car infotainment system to delete data stored on it but despite that, a PSNI technical officer had been able to retrieve GPS data which puts the car entering the Owenbeg car park at a time when it parks up beside the van used by the terrorists. In court, a prosecuting lawyer submitted there was a case to answer against each of the defendants and their respective lawyers conceded the point. None of the three commented in the charges or called evidence on their own behalves. Freeing them all on continuing bail, District Judge Peter King returned the case to Belfast Crown Court and although he did not specify a date for their arraignment, he said it was likely to be on 12 September.

Ian Bailey will have his last request honoured by family and friends this weekend when his ashes are scattered in West Cork. The 67 year old died suddenly from a heart attack in Bantry, West Cork, last year and was cremated just days afterwards. The former poet had been the 'main suspect' in the murder of 'Sophie Toscan du Plantier' for a number of years, but always argued his innocence, saying the accusations 'ruined his life'. Ian Bailey to be granted last request as plan for spreading of his ashes emerges
Ian Bailey is to get his last request - his ashes are to be spread in west Cork this weekend. A private get together is being organised by his family and friends to say a dignified "goodbye" to the main suspect in the Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder, almost 18 months after his death. The private service will involve poetry, music and some prayers and at least 20 people are expected to attend. Among them are his sister Kay Reynolds and the filmmaker Jim Sheridan who has spent the past few years defending the Englishman's innocence. Ian Bailey has always denied killing French beauty Sophie. In the weeks before he died from a heart attack he made a 40-minute video tape from his hospital bed telling how he was totally innocent and that his life had been ruined by Sophie's murder, 32 years ago. That tape is now in the possession of an Irish TV producer and documentary maker and is expected to be screened publicly at some stage. The 67-year-old former journalist and poet was cremated within days of his sudden death outside his home in Bantry, Co Cork in January last year. He collapsed from a massive heart attack as he walked down the street. He had suffered heart problems for the previous year and was too weak to undergo surgery. His sister Kay did not want his funeral to be turned into a media circus so no one was allowed to attend his cremation in Cork city apart from the undertakers. Bailey told his sister that he wanted his ashes to be spread over his beloved west Cork where he lived most of his life after he passed away. This will now be done this weekend after the private farewell get together. A source said: "Details of the event are being kept very quiet and it is a private affair. "Ian wanted his ashes spread in west Cork so this is what will be happening. "He may have been a suspect and in many ways an outcast because he was eccentric but there were a small number of people who had time for him and were always in contact. "They never got the chance to pay their respects or say goodbye, but they will now. "There will be pints, poetry, music and prayer." Jim Sheridan has made a new movie on the murder called Re-creation, starring Colin Meaney who plays Bailey and Aidan Gillen. He is adamant there was no evidence against Ian Bailey to prove he killed Sophie and the film by all accounts reflects this view. Sophie's family totally disagree and believe the new film contains much fiction and should not have been made while the Garda investigation into the murder is continuing. Yesterday, Gardai confirmed their review into Sophie's murder despite Ian Bailey's death is still continuing. In a statement, Gardai said: "The Garda investigation into the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996 remains active and ongoing. "The Garda Serious Crime Review Team's review into this murder, which began in June 2022, also continues. "Throughout this investigation An Garda Siochana has appealed to any person with any information in relation to the investigation to come forward in order to assist us. "Gardai continue to appeal to anyone with information to contact the investigation team at Bantry Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666111." Bailey's former partner Jules Thomas disclosed last weekend that she is suffering from a terminal illness. The couple split up a few years ago but she also still insists he didn't kill Sophie.
