CGEM Urges Morocco's Private Sector to Grant June 9 Holiday for Eid Al Adha
Rabat – Chakib Alj, the President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), has urged the private sector companies to grant employees a day off on Monday, June 9, aligning with the public sector, in celebration of Eid Al-Adha, which will take place on Saturday, June 7 in Morocco.
Last week, the government decided to exceptionally suspend work in state administrations and local authorities on Monday, June 9.
CGEM called on companies to follow suit, noting: 'We invite, as far as possible, private sector companies to also grant Monday, June 9, as a day off to their employees,' Alj said.
Eid Al Adha falls on the tenth day of Dhu Al Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The Islamic month marks Eid Al Adha or the sacrifice feast, which commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah's command.
Dhu Al Hijjah also marks the Hajj pilgrimage, which will commence on June 4.
While the feast is a sacred and special time in Morocco, Moroccans will celebrate it differently this time.
In February, Morocco announced its decision to cancel the Eid Al Adha sacrifice ritual due to drought and a notable decrease in the country's livestock population due to dry seasons that affected Morocco's agriculture sector for six years in a row.
This is not the first time Morocco has canceled the Eid Al Adha sacrifice ritual.
The first time dates back to 1963 when the late King Hassan II announced the cancellation of the sacrifice ritual during the Sand War between Morocco and Algeria, as it affected the two countries' economies.
The second time was in 1981, and the cancellation was due to drought, as well as in 1996.
Last week, ONCF announced that it has expanded the train schedule ahead of Eid Al Adha from May 30 to June 15 to help travelers move easily and safely during the holiday.
The program includes up to 237 trains per day across the national network.
ONCF also pledged to add extra trains on the main routes to help passengers during busy times. Tags: Eid Al Adhaeid al adha 2025

Morocco and CEMAC sign cooperation pact to boost economic ties and regional integration
A cooperation agreement was signed on Friday in Laayoune between the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM) and the business associations of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) countries. This took place on the sidelines of the Parliamentary Forum on economic cooperation between Morocco and the regional bloc's Parliament. Signed by CGEM President Chakib Alj and representatives of the CEMAC business associations, the agreement establishes a Morocco-CEMAC Task Force as a joint platform for dialogue, coordination, and economic cooperation. Its mission is to structure collaboration, encourage information exchange, share best practices and business opportunities, support joint projects between companies from both regions, and serve as a proactive interface between Moroccan and CEMAC business communities. The agreement also creates a Steering Committee, co-chaired by a CGEM representative and one from each CEMAC business association. This committee will set up sectoral working groups, bringing together business leaders, experts, and institutional partners around priority themes. The parties commit to cooperating on identifying high-potential sectors of complementarity such as agro-industry, infrastructure, renewable energy, manufacturing industries, and digital services. They also pledged to facilitate business partnerships through matchmaking programs and B2B meetings, organize regular economic forums, and promote cross-investment, regional integration, and support for technology and skills transfer via training, expertise exchange, and industrial co-development projects. In a statement to MAP during the ceremony, Chakib Alj highlighted the complementarities between Morocco's and CEMAC economies, emphasizing the agreement to identify practical actions to boost economic ties. «Our goal is to create momentum between Moroccan companies and their CEMAC counterparts, fostering synergy and knowledge exchange», said the CGEM president. Similarly, Jean Daniel Ovaga, Chairman of the Congolese National Union of Economic Operators (UNOC), stressed that the agreement enables the private sector—a key driver of economic growth and value creation—to fully contribute to identifying priority cooperation sectors benefiting Morocco and CEMAC populations. «This is a strong commitment to move forward together, rebuild Africa, and bring growth and expertise to local communities», he stated. The Parliamentary Forum on economic cooperation between Morocco and the CEMAC Parliament aims to promote joint development projects and contribute to Africa's economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

Morocco to Hold Hajj 2026 Lottery from June 23 to July 4
Rabat – Morocco's Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs announced that the national lottery to select pilgrims for Hajj 1447 AH (2026) will take place from June 23 to July 4. The ministry said the draw will be held at the local level, in provinces and districts, for those applying through the official Moroccan Hajj program. For pilgrims registering through travel agencies, the draw will be conducted at the regional level. The final list of selected pilgrims will be made public immediately after the draw is completed. In addition, the ministry will also release a waiting list to replace anyone who may cancel from the main or backup lists. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a religious pilgrimage that every Muslim who is physically and financially able must perform at least once in their lifetime. The journey takes place in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah. Each year, millions of Muslims from around the world travel to Mecca to take part in this deeply spiritual event. It includes a series of rituals such as circling the Kaaba, praying at Mount Arafat, and other sacred acts meant to purify the soul and strengthen faith. Saudi Arabia said earlier this week that the 2025 Hajj season was a success. The pilgrimage was completed peacefully and safely, and authorities commended the smooth organization and the commitment of all involved in ensuring the safety and comfort of the pilgrims. Morocco Invests $300 Million to Rebuild National Herd
Rabat – The Moroccan government will introduce a new support plan for livestock breeders to improve their working conditions and sustainably rebuild the national herd. Agriculture Minister Ahmed El Bouari shared the news on Tuesday at the House of Councillors. He explained that the plan adds to earlier efforts and comes at a moment when recent rainfall offers a rare window to revive livestock numbers after several difficult seasons. El Bouari outlined five main pillars that will shape the new approach. The first focuses on easing the debt load of small and medium-scale breeders. The government will allocate MAD 700 million ($70 million) to restructure loans for nearly 50,000 farmers. Half of all debts under MAD 100,000 ($10,000) will be cancelled, a measure that benefits about three-quarters of eligible breeders. A quarter of the loans, ranging between MAD 100,000 ($10,000) and MAD 200,000 ($20,000), will also be forgiven. For those with larger debts, the government will reschedule payments and waive late penalties. The second pillar deals with the cost of feed, one of the most urgent problems breeders face. Authorities will set barley prices at MAD 1.5 ($0.15) per kilogram, capped at 7 million quintals. Compound feed for sheep and goats will cost no more than MAD 2 ($0.20) per kilogram, again with a volume limit. This effort requires an estimated MAD 2.5 billion ($250 million) and seeks to ease financial pressure ahead of key livestock cycles. The third part of the program targets breeding females, especially as concerns rise over illegal slaughter. The state will grant MAD 400 ($40) for every female sheep or goat that breeders register and keep for reproduction. Officials hope this direct support will cover upkeep costs and discourage early slaughter, which undermines future herd stability. El Bouari also announced a nationwide animal health campaign as the fourth measure. The government will allocate MAD 150 million ($15 million) to protect 17 million sheep and goats from diseases that tend to spread more aggressively during dry periods. The fifth and final measure turns to long-term resilience. Breeders will receive technical guidance and support for genetic improvement through artificial insemination programs and advisory services. The government plans to invest MAD 50 million ($5 million) in this effort. El Bouari estimated the total cost of the new program at MAD 3 billion ($300 million) by the end of 2025. The government has also set aside an additional MAD 3.2 billion ($320 million) for 2026 to reward breeders who manage to keep their reproductive females. This year, Eid al-Adha sacrifice was called off in Morocco, largely due to the severe drought that has gripped the country for six consecutive years, and which has heavily impacted the national cattle. These measures strive to reverse the current decline and steer the sector toward recovery. Still, while the efforts are commendable, one must ask: are they sufficient to truly relieve the pressure?
