Foul reality behind city's newly-approved micro-apartment development
Filthy scenes of human waste, used needles and makeshift beds are commonplace for this inner-city strip, but a new development might be what finally flushes it clean. Stirling Street in Perth, a whisper from the notorious local homeless 'badlands', was last week approved for the $22 million development of a new micro apartment complex. Locals say it's a long overdue solution for a problem that has been spiralling out of control for years, costing them thousands in signage and clean-up fees. Of the 88 flats, 64 will be just 26 sqm and the rest will be 41 sqm lofts. 'We've had people defecating and urinating out the back. We've actually got a sign now telling people not to do it,' director at local business Media Junction Interact Digital, Justin Walker said. 'The worst thing is the dumpings. You'll get a homeless person that will stay out the front for a day or two but then when they leave there's a whole heap of rubbish.' He added that police nor the local council were prepared to 'do anything about it', and routinely thrust the onus onto businesses to keep the area presentable. 'There's a very bad homeless situation, all the businesses have been affected,' Mr Walker said. 'People live at the back of their businesses for months on end, we had one next door for about four months.' It wasn't just unpleasant on the eyes and nose, the disaster has also been posing safety risks. 'The guy two doors down is dealing with syringes, so he's got a duty of care issue for himself and his staff. So he can't be not cleaning this stuff up,' Mr Walker said. 'It's a shame because it has the potential to be a really good part of Perth. 'But put it this way, there's nothing we haven't seen at this point.' An overhaul of Stirling street was long overdue Mr Walker argued, and he wasn't alone. 'This area needs a bit more gentrification, because at night-time it's not very nice,' director at Cable 8, also on Stirling Street, Ren Stefanuto said. Asked if the area would be too dangerous for an average person to visit at night, he replied 'sh*t yeah', adding 'I don't think you should come near it'. Mr Stefanuto hoped the development would attract a suite of different people including hospitality workers and holiday-makers. 'I think it's a great idea,' he said. Owner of nearby cult eatery Compton Burgers, John, echoed the sentiment. 'I think it will be good for the neighbourhood, and there will be more people around,' he said. He had high hopes the block would attract 'good people' who would have a positive impact on the street, particularly in the evenings. 'It's not a good environment here at night, you get all sorts of people coming here,' John said. There has been cautious optimism the complex will help clean up the street and its surrounding businesses, but some locals anonymously told they weren't convinced. They argued it would take far more than a new building to solve such a raging problem, that has routinely forced businesses to close for weeks at a time due to destructive behaviour. A few streets over is the Zen Apartments which was the first to development – going up in 2014 – to contain micro units for Perth, with the smallest measuring in at 33 sqm. South of the river in O'Conner is another complex, built in 2019, that has units as small as 25 sqm. The new Stirling Street apartments will be some of the smallest in Australia, measuring a square metre or two under the standard 'micro apartment' benchmark. They will be fully furnished with a balcony, bed, kitchenette, bathroom, lounge and dining space. There is a proposed communal roof terrace, office space, gym and laundry. The apartments are not for individual sale but would be leased by a dedicated property manager, with leases running between three months and three years. Developers say FIFO workers, students and young professionals without cars will be the target market – for a building of 88 apartments, there are 25 car spaces. There are many established micro apartment complexes across Australia, and this latest project is not the first in Perth. But Perth is in the grips of a massive spike in property prices, on the same galactic trajectory as Adelaide and Brisbane.

Trainer Jason Coyle was relieved as Lulumon delivers in spectacular fashion at Randwick
Lulumon burst back to her best and denied Storm The Ramparts a hat-trick of Royal Randwick 1000m sprints wins on Saturday. Storm The Ramparts, burdened with 61.5kg, led until the final stride when collared by the fast-finishing Lulumon in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap. Trainer Jason Coyle was relieved to see Lulumon rebound after a disappointing run at Rosehill last start. 'We can put a line through that second-up run now as she is heading in the right direction,' Coyle said. 'We will find an 1100m race for her as she will still get that strong tempo so she can hit the line.' Lulumon ($4.40) certainly attacked the line with real gusto to reel in a very game Storm The Ramparts ($7) right on the line to win by a nose with Hi Dubai ($6) a short head away third. Coyle said there were various reasons for Lulumon's Rosehill flop and he anticipated the mare would return to the form that saw her win at the Gosford stand-alone meeting first-up when she also ran down Storm The Ramparts. 'At Rosehill, Lulumon didn't step well, she got her head up in the air and Alysha (Collett, jockey) said the mare hated the (heavy 8) surface,' Coyle said. 'So, we got her home, we reset and gave her three weeks between runs and it has worked out well. She's back on track. 'Mares that can win on Saturday a couple of times, you know there is a nice stakes race on the horizon.' Meanwhile, Stradbroke Handicap-winning jockey Tim Clark continued his winning momentum on Rotagilla in QMS Media Handicap (1600m). Hall of Fame trainer Chris Waller switched Rotagilla back in distance from 2000m two weeks ago and the three-year-old enjoyed a more solid race tempo and was powerful to the line. 'With Rotagilla coming back from 2000m I knew he was going to be strong at the back end of his race,' said Clark, who won the Stradbroke last week on War Machine. 'He quickened up well at the top of the straight and he was brave to the line.' Rotagilla ($6.50) safely held his rivals at bay to score by three-quarters of a length from Last Command ($17) with Engine Room ($16) a half length away third. Waller's stable representative Charlie Duckworth said Rotagilla was 'too aggressive' over 2000m last start (when third to Millie De Lune) and will gain confidence from his tough win over the famous Randwick mile course.

Former Adelaide United player Ryan Tunnicliffe angry over alleged Reds' attempt to ‘force' his departure
Former Adelaide United midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe has broken his silence on the 'disgraceful' way he was treated by the Reds, claiming the club deliberately attempted to break his 'resolve' and force him to leave. The 32-year-old Englishman's comments come on the back of revelations this week made by former Reds assistant coach Travis Dodd, and the subsequent way Tunnicliffe says they were 'downplayed' by club chief executive officer Nathan Kosmina. Dodd claimed in an interview with 7 News that Adelaide's technical director Ernest Faber was 'undermining' the club's recently departed coach Carl Veart during the Reds' 2024-25 campaign, including calling a 'secret meeting' with the squad's player leadership group to tell them that 'they could pick the team'. The report also claimed that Faber made Tunnicliffe train by himself for two weeks and undertake 'torturous running sessions'. 'Credit to him, for two weeks … he did what he was asked to do. Seemingly Ernest had enough after two weeks, and let him rejoin the first-team squad,' Dodd said. In a post on Saturday on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Tunnicliffe said he wasn't going to comment out of 'respect for the team, the manager and his staff'. However, comments made by Kosmina to Channel 10 on Friday led to Tunnicliffe feeling 'compelled to respond'. 'Different players respond differently to different coaching techniques … that balance is always a tricky one,' Kosmina said. 'Regardless of right or wrong, what we don't want is to be dragged into a tit-for-tat in the media.' — Ryan Tunnicliffe (@RyanTunnicliffe) June 20, 2025 Tunnicliffe – whose contract wasn't renewed after his only A-League appearance during the 2024-25 season was as a 90th-minute substitute in a 4-0 win over Central Coast in December – said the Reds 'sought to downplay both the situation and the club's handling of it'. 'Being separated from the playing group and made to train in isolation, was not only deeply disappointing, it was disgraceful,' he said. 'Throughout this period, I continued to fulfil all contractual obligations, remained professional, and did everything that was asked of me. 'I was the only player subjected to this so-called 'individualised program', which in reality appeared to be a targeted effort to pressure me out of the club as part of a cost-cutting measure. It was, in my view, a deliberate attempt to undermine my resolve and force my departure.' Tunnicliffe also rejected Channel 10's claim it had been told that he 'gave the Reds a favourable review' in an end-of-season player survey. 'As for the so-called 'favourable' end-of-year player survey … this claim is entirely fabricated,' he said. Tunnicliffe said he was 'currently taking legal advice on the matter'. Professional Footballers Australia chief executive officer Beau Busch said Adelaide's alleged treatment of Tunnicliffe had breached the collective bargaining agreement. 'The practice of forcing players to train alone and excluding them from their team has no place in the A-League's and is a breach of the collective bargaining agreement,' Busch said. 'We are in contact with Ryan and the club. We will ensure Ryan is supported, and engage with the club to address the matter.' Busch is also set to meet with another departed Adelaide player, Josh Cavallo, who was also critical of the club, and the treatment he received from the Reds. 'Carl (Veart) was under clear instructions by the people above him (Ernest Faber) during pre-season that I wasn't allowed to step foot on the pitch … hence was I was sidelined fit for the entire season,' Cavallo said in a social media post this week. 'What you think Adelaide United is, think again. It's not quite what I believed it was. It broke my heart and also my career as a footballer.'
