Texans select Florida All-American OL Jake Slaughter in 2026 mock draft
It's never too early to look ahead to the 2026 NFL Draft. For the Houston Texans, they'll continue to look to build around their offensive line.
In the latest 2026 mock draft from Pro Football Focus, Houston adds yet another lineman to protect C.J. Stroud, entering what could be the final year of his rookie contract. After making the playoffs for a third straight time, PFF has the Texans missing the divisional round and selecting 20th overall.
With the pick, Houston bolsters its interior by adding Florida All-American center Jake Slaughter as the next great run blocker for Pro Bowler Joe Mixon and newcomer Woody Marks.
"The best center in college football gets matched with the team most desperate for interior offensive line help," PFF wrote. "Slaughter ranked second in the Power Four with an 82.1 PFF overall grade, despite facing a gauntlet schedule that included Miami, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas and Ole Miss. He was the only qualified Power Four center who earned an 80.0-plus PFF grade as a run blocker and as a pass protector in 2024."
Slaughter started the last 23 games at Florida and has been the definition of consistency. Not only have the Gators been a top-five team in rushing among SEC contenders, but they've also allowed the fourth-fewest sacks. Slaughter, who has over 1,400 reps, has allowed one sack during that span.
The Texans have hope that second-round pick Aireontae Ersery can be the stable left tackle replacement for Laremy Tunsil beginning in 2025. At right tackle, 2024 second-round pick Blake Fisher will have a crack at locking down the position for 2025 as Tytus Howard shifts inside to guard.
But the center position remains a mystery. Juice Scruggs struggled to maintain consistency in pass protection, thus leading to Jarrett Patterson taking over. He's slightly better defending defensive tackles, but there's a weak point to his game when it comes to winning upfield in one-on-one battles.
The Texans might have some pieces in the protection department, but they need stability on the interior. Slaughter, who remains the nation's top center and is the favorite to win the Rimmington Trophy, could be the answer beginning next fall.
Of course, Texans fans hope to select the All-American with the No. 32 pick rather than the No. 20 pick for obvious reasons.

PFF: What do the Bills still need to 'think about' during the 2025 NFL offseason?
The Buffalo Bills front office has geared up the team for another run at a Super Bowl in 2025 but Pro Football Focus is not convinced all the work is done just yet. The football analytics outlet broke down one item each NFL team still needs to "think about" this offseason. For Buffalo, it relates to linebacker Matt Milano. Milano has undoubtedly been one of the best players at his position in football during his career but the issue that has popped up for him is his health. Because of that, Milano and the Bills reworked his contract this offseason and he's in the final year of his deal in 2025. What PFF thinks the team needs to keep in mind moving forward is the status of Milano's future... but none of that can be determined until next season begins. PFF's breakdown on Milano can be found below: Milano is entering the final year of his contract, though there are two void years attached that the Bills could convert if he wants to keep playing. But if this is his last year in Buffalo, how does the team feel about the rest of the linebacker group? Terrel Bernard struggled last season on his way to a 48.2 PFF overall grade, ranking 83rd among 90 linebackers, but the Bills signed him to a four-year extension this offseason, so he's not going anywhere. Dorian Williams wasn't much better (58.2) and is now halfway through his rookie deal. Could Buffalo look to make a big splash at linebacker in the 2026 NFL Draft?

Orioles' Jordan Westburg exits game against Yankees with left hand discomfort
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Baltimore Orioles infielder Jordan Westburg exited Saturday's game against the New York Yankees in the third inning because of left hand discomfort. Westburg, who started at designated hitter, walked in the first inning and stole second during an at-bat by Gunnar Henderson. He was replaced in the third by rookie Coby Mayo. The 26-year-old missed more than a month with a left hamstring strain before returning on June 10. Westburg is hitting .229 with seven homers and 17 RBIs in 34 games this season. He had 10 hits in his first 25 at-bats before going hitless in his next 14. Westburg was an All-Star last season, when he batted .264 with 18 homers and 63 RBIs. Earlier Saturday, the Orioles placed catcher Adley Rutschman on the injured list with a strained left oblique. Rutschman felt pain in batting practice Friday and is on the IL for the first time in his career. ___ More AP baseball: recommended

Tracy McGrady Says He Never Got Title Shot Like Kobe Bryant
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. NBA Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady is one of the greatest players to have ever graced the basketball court. His skill set at his size was almost unheard of at the time. There is no question about his skill, but while that's the case, he has never been to the mountaintop. Despite his skill and resume, leaving the game of basketball without a championship is among the biggest things lacking for McGrady. Winning a championship is a feat only a few star players get to accomplish, and McGrady is not one of them. However, if you ask him, he feels he was never given a legitimate opportunity to win one. During a recent appearance on ESPN's First Take, McGrady didn't hold back, offering a bold take on the topic. He suggested that if you swapped Kobe Bryant for himself during that era, the Los Angeles Lakers would have still achieved the same level of success. Photo by"We have too many talented players that come through this league that are championship worthy," said McGrady. "What I mean by that is, if you take them off a team that is a championship-quality team -- replace me with Kobe with Shaq. You don't think I could carry the Lakers to a championship? I never had the opportunity. I felt like that if I was put in that position to win a championship, I damn sure would show up and do what I do in the playoffs to elevate my team to that level. I just never had the chance. So, do I get diminished because I never won a championship? I was never put in that position." McGrady finished his career without a championship, but he still made seven All-Stars, a two-time scoring champion, a seven-time All-NBA player and won Most Improved Player in 2000-01. While his resume is not one to boast about, Bryant's resume and accomplishments in the game far surpass McGrady's. As for the late great legend, he is not only a Hall of Famer himself but also an 18-time All-Star, a five-time NBA champion, a two-time Finals MVP, a 2008 NBA MVP, a 12-time All-Defensive team member, a 15-time All-NBA selection, a two-time scoring champion, and a member of the 75th NBA Anniversary team. While Bryant always spoke highly of McGrady — once noting that McGrady could do everything he could, only with more height—it's clear the Lakers icon had more than just talent on his side. Bryant had the benefit of stronger supporting casts throughout much of his career, but more importantly, he possessed a rare mentality and competitive edge that separated him from the pack and helped push him to the next level.
