Nagpur ZP retired teachers accuse authorities of delaying pensions

Time of India11-05-2025

Nagpur: Retired teachers have accused the Nagpur Zilla Parishad (ZP) of delaying payments under the
Maharashtra State Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme
, 1982, for over five years. The scheme, which was implemented in 1990 for ZP employees and teachers, has become a point of contention due to sudden demands for arrears with compound interest. The scheme classifies employees into four groups (A to D) based on their pay scales, with monthly deductions ranging from ₹30 to ₹480.
Despite regular deductions from 1990 to 2025 for various teaching positions, the ZP has failed to release the final insurance payouts to hundreds of retired educators, claimed a teachers' association."The situation worsened when the ZP's chief accounts and finance officer instructed block education officers across 13 panchayat samitis to recover arrears from retired teachers, including 12% compound interest calculated over 25 to 30 years. The amounts being demanded range from ₹4,000 to ₹50,000, causing distress among retirees," said Sharad Bhandarkar, general secretary of the MNS Shikshak Shikshak Sangh. He questioned how such an oversight could occur over three decades, especially when salary processing was done through computerized systems with proper departmental approvals. Bhandarkar also claimed that around 400 retired teachers are awaiting gratuity and pension payments totaling approximately ₹60 crore. The affected teachers are demanding an investigation into the ZP's administrative departments. Bhandarkar has called for verification of actual records before calculating arrears and suggested adjusting legitimate dues from insurance payouts without applying interest. He also warned that protests would be launched if their demands were not addressed promptly.

State govt ‘secretly scrapped' Marathi theatre museum project: Aaditya Thackeray

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Saturday alleged that the state government has 'secretly scrapped' a Marathi theatre museum project at Girgaum Chowpatty that was announced by former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in 2021. Thackeray accused the government of sidelining Marathi identity and questioned whether the project's cancellation was politically motivated or linked to commercial interests. In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), Aaditya accused the BJP of pursuing an 'anti-Marathi agenda' by quietly scrapping the Marathi theatre museum project at Girgaum Chowpatty. 'We have no opposition to any language, but we will always oppose linguistic imposition,' he wrote. Referring to ongoing protests around Marathi language, Thackeray alleged that the BJP government was systematically trying to dilute Marathi cultural identity — first by cancelling the 'Marathi Rangbhoomi Dalan' announced by former CM Uddhav Thackeray, and then by attempting to shift unrelated offices into the Marathi Language Bhavan, delaying its completion in the process. 'Who exactly is opposing Marathi at Girgaum Chowpatty?' he asked, suggesting that neither locals nor the Marathi-speaking public had raised objections. 'Was it the local BJP MLA? Or is the land being earmarked for a builder friend?' questioned Aaditya, demanding answers from what he called the 'Maharashtra-hating BJP.' Thackeray ended the post with a call to Mumbaikars to recognize what he termed the BJP's ongoing attempts to sideline Marathi identity through bureaucratic and political manoeuvres. The plan, announced by Uddhav Thackeray, involved revamping the defunct Birla Krida Kendra into a museum chronicling the history of Marathi theatre, with an auditorium, amphitheatre and exhibition space showcasing rare memorabilia and archival footage. Spread across 7,000 square metres, the Kendra has remained shut since 2000.

Tulu can be used in panchayat meetings, no legal bar

A controversy has erupted in coastal Karnataka after a letter from the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to Taluk Panchayat officials sparked confusion over the use of the Tulu language in gram panchayat meetings. Responding to the development, Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy president Tarananth Gatti Kapikad clarified that there is no legal restriction on elected representatives using Tulu during discussions in gram panchayat general body meetings. He urged the CEO to withdraw the advisory to avoid further confusion. The issue arose after Muralidhar, director of Yashaswi Nagarika Seva Samsthe in Karkala, submitted a representation to the ZP CEO requesting that Kannada be prioritised in panchayat meetings and Tulu use be avoided by officials and members. Acting on the petition, the ZP CEO reportedly wrote to Taluk Panchayat Executive Officers to take action as per rules. However, it is noteworthy that the CEO's letter does not explicitly ban the use of Tulu, nor does it impose any language restriction.
