Pro-Palestinian activists damage planes at UK military base
LONDON - Pro-Palestinian activists in Britain broke into a Royal Air Force base in central England on Friday where they damaged and sprayed red paint over two military aircraft used for refuelling and transportation.
The campaign group Palestine Action said two of its activists had entered the Brize Norton base in Oxfordshire, spraying paint into the engines of the Voyager aircraft and causing further damage with crowbars.
"Despite publicly condemning the Israeli government, Britain continues to send military cargo, fly spy planes over Gaza and refuel U.S./Israeli fighter jets," the group said in a statement, posting a video of the incident on X.
"Britain isn't just complicit, it's an active participant in the Gaza genocide and war crimes across the Middle East."
Britain's defence ministry condemned the "vandalism" and said it was working with police to investigate.
"Our Armed Forces represent the very best of Britain. They put their lives on the line for us, and their display of duty, dedication and selfless personal sacrifice are an inspiration to us all," it said.
"It is our responsibility to support those who defend us."
Police said they were investigating a report of people gaining access to the air base and causing criminal damage.
Palestine Action is among groups that have regularly targeted defence firms and other companies in Britain linked to Israel since the start of the conflict in Gaza.
The group said it had also sprayed paint on the runway and left a Palestine flag there. REUTERS

Prosecutors hope the testimony by Brendan Paul, who worked for Combs from late 2022 through March 2024, will help them prove their racketeering conspiracy charge against Combs. Prosecutors say Combs used his businesses' resources to coerce women into ecstasy-fuelled sexual performances with male sex workers. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to all five criminal counts. His lawyers call the sexual activity consensual. The Bad Boy Records founder, a former billionaire who elevated hip-hop in American culture, could face life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors are winding down their case after six weeks, with defense witnesses expected to testify next week. Paul, testifying under immunity from prosecutors, said he bought Combs about US$4,200 (S$5,400) of marijuana and hundreds of dollars of ketamine during his employment. Jurors saw a text message in which Paul asked Combs' security staff to be reimbursed for his drug purchases. They also saw a Feb 14, 2024 text message in which Combs wrote 'You get me zans,' which Paul said was a request to procure Xanax without a prescription. Paul said Combs ultimately obtained Xanax elsewhere, and used cocaine and ecstasy in his presence. Under cross-examination by defence lawyer Brian Steel, Paul said procuring drugs was a minor part of his job, and he thought the drugs were solely for Combs' personal use. Paul said he was charged with cocaine possession after being arrested on March 25, 2024, at Miami-Opa Locka airport in Florida while travelling to the Bahamas with Combs and other staffers. He said he put the cocaine in his bag after finding it while cleaning Combs' room that day, but forgot about it and did not tell law enforcement where it came from. North Carolina resident killed in Puerto Rico for flashy jewelry
SAN JUAN - A North Carolina resident vacationing with his family in Puerto Rico was killed overnight in a robbery, leaving him stripped of the luxury jewelry he was wearing, police said on Friday. UN watchdog warns of nuclear disaster if Israel attacks Iran's Bushehr plant

PHOTO: REUTERS – The Middle East risks a nuclear catastrophe if Israel strikes Iran's southern nuclear plant of Bushehr, the head of the UN atomic watchdog warned on June 20. Mr Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told the UN Security Council that he has not yet detected radiation resulting from Israel's week-long military campaign against Iran, including attacks on nuclear sites. But he said that a strike on Bushehr – the Middle East's first civilian nuclear reactor, which so far appears to have been spared – would spell the most serious consequences as it contains thousands of kilograms of nuclear material. 'Countries of the region have reached out directly to me over the past few hours to express their concerns, and I want to make it absolutely and completely clear: in case of an attack on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, a direct hit would result in a very high release of radioactivity,' Mr Grossi said. He warned of equally dire consequences even if Israel strikes the lines that supply electricity to Bushehr, saying such disabling of power could trigger a meltdown. In a worst-case scenario, evacuations and orders to take shelter would need to be issued for areas within several hundred kilometres of Bushehr – which would include population centres in Gulf Arab monarchies, a major artery of the global economy. The population would also need to take iodine and may see restrictions in food supply, Mr Grossi added. Construction on Bushehr began in the 1970s as the pro-Western shah sought to develop civilian nuclear power. German scientists initially worked on the plant. Since the 1990s, however, the Islamic republic has worked with Russia to develop and maintain Bushehr. Mr Grossi appealed for a diplomatic solution and repeated his willingness to travel to negotiate a deal. 'The IAEA can guarantee through a watertight inspection system that nuclear weapons will not be developed in Iran,' he said.
