Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Sunday said that 22 more deceased in the AI 171 plane crash in Ahmedabad have had their DNA samples matched. With this he said that a total of 42 deceased in the tragedy have been identified so far through DNA sampling."Update as of 1.00 pm- From 9 PM last night to 1 PM today, our teams have worked tirelessly to match DNA samples. Today, at around 11:10 AM, his DNA has matched. He worked for the people of the state for several years..,"The state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working through the night to match more DNA samples.According to Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), HP Sanghavi, DNA examination is critically needed to identify the victims of the tragic crash, citing that the extreme heat from the blaze that erupted after the crash had made the traditional method of identification ineffective.On Saturday, Ahmedabad Additional Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital Dr Rajnish Patel said a total of 31 DNAs have been identified and 12 bodies have been handed over to their respective family members."The bodies of 31 DNAs have been matched. 12 bodies have been handed over to their respective family members. We are waiting for others to come and collect the remains of their relatives", he told reporters.Air India has announced that an interim financial assistance package of Rs 25 lakh (approximately GBP 21,000) will be provided to the "families of the deceased and to the survivor" of the tragic crash after the plane rammed into a doctors' hostel in the Meghani Nagar area in Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after it took off from Sardar Vallabhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. In a post on X, the Tata-owned airline stated that the package was in addition to the Rs 1 crore support already announced by Tata Sons.On Thursday, the Air India flight AI171 was en route to London from Ahmedabad when it crashed shortly after takeoff from the airport, ramming into a doctors' hostel of BJ Medical College in Gujarat's Ahmedabad.There were 242 people on board the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Of the passengers, 241 died in the crash. The lone survivor, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment.

The move comes at a time when China has imposed export curbs on rare earths and Indian industry has raised alarm bells on shortage of magnets and other components. India is looking at a Rs 3,500-Rs 5,000 crore scheme to promote the production of rare earth minerals and derived magnets domestically, with approval expected within two weeks, according to a senior government official. "The priority is to start domestic-critical mineral production in the shortest time period," the official told ET. China dominates global supply of rare earth magnets and has implemented export restrictions. These essential minerals, vital for manufacturing automobiles, electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy infrastructure, face supply constraints. The incentives in India's proposed programme will be distributed through a reverse bidding mechanism. This initiative follows an internal ministerial assessment that highlighted the necessity to diversify supply sources, given the substantial reliance on imports from China. India's Rare Earth Requirements The automotive sector has highlighted concerns about Chinese restrictions and requested governmental assistance. In April, Beijing introduced mandatory special export licences for seven rare earth elements and associated magnets. In India, manufacturers of EVs and wind turbines represent the primary consumers of rare earth elements, accounting for more than 50% of the projected domestic demand of 4010 metric tonnes in 2025. The overall requirement is anticipated to reach 8220 metric tonnes by 2030. Two Pune cops suspended for extorting money from two on Law College Road
Two policemen have been suspended from service for allegedly extorting money from a man and his friend on the Law College Road in Pune city. The two had filed a complaint against the policemen identified as Ganesh Desai and Yogesh Surat, both attached to the Deccan police station in Pune. According to the police, a man was talking to his woman friend in a car on the Law College Road on Tuesday night. Desai and Sutar were on patrolling duty in this area. They allegedly threatened to file a case against the two and demanded Rs 20,000 for not taking the matter to the police station. The two cops allegedly took the man to an ATM centre near Kamla Nehru Park and forced him to withdraw the money. They let the man go after taking money from him. Later, the man and his friend went to the police station and filed a complaint against the two policemen. Senior police inspector Girisha Nimbalkar of Deccan police station conducted an inquiry against the two policemen. The inquiry report was submitted to Deputy Commissioner of Police Nikhil Pingle. Based on the findings of the inquiry, the two cops were suspended from service on Friday. Earlier this month, a case has been registered against a policeman for allegedly extorting money from a Chennai-based teenager who came to Bopdev Ghat area in Pune for taking photos. The teenager had lodged the FIR against the accused police constable and his friend at the Kondhwa police station. Subsequently, the policeman was suspended from service.

Malviya further said that under the PLI scheme for electronics alone, 1,39,670 direct jobs have already been created. As many as 1.8 lakh new companies were registered in 2023-24, marking a 16 per cent increase over the previous year, he said. "Electronics exports hit USD 38+ billion in FY24-25, a 32 per cent year-on-year increase," Malviya said. "PLI allocations for electronics rose from Rs 5,747 crore (FY24-25) to Rs 8,885 crore (FY25-26) - a clear signal of continued commitment," he added. Malviya said the government has approved landmark semiconductor projects worth Rs 1.52 lakh crore, "a critical leap into deep-tech manufacturing". Overall, electronics production is projected to reach USD 300 billion by 2026, he said.
