Mumbai mainstay Siddhesh Lad named Maratha Royals captain in T20 League Debut

India Gazette26-05-2025

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 26 (ANI): Mumbai circuit's proven performer Siddhesh Lad will lead the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals as captain for their debut campaign in T20 Mumbai League Season 3.
A proud product of Shivaji Park, Lad's deep familiarity with Mumbai cricket and proven ability across formats make him the natural choice to lead a team built on strong fundamentals and local identity.
A technically sound, level-headed batsman with over a decade of experience, Lad, 32, has played 74 First Class, 50 List A, and 60 T20 matches, amassing more than 4100 runs in the Ranji Trophy, where he stands eighth on Mumbai's all-time run-scorers list.
An occasional off-spinner, he also spent time playing in the UK before returning to hit a career-best 169* against Odisha in the 2024-25 Ranji season. Known as Mumbai's 'crisis man' for his ability to steady innings under pressure, Lad brings that same grit and game awareness to the Maratha Royals.
Beyond the captaincy, the squad sees two changes, with Rohan Raje and Saksham Parashar replacing icon player Tushar Deshpande, who will miss the season owing to national commitments with the India A squad touring England, and Arman Jaffer.
Speaking on his appointment, Siddhesh Lad said, as quoted from a press release from Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals, 'It's an honour to lead Maratha Royals, especially in our first season. I've always taken pride in representing Mumbai, and this opportunity to lead a franchise rooted in Shivaji Park, where I began my journey, means a lot. We've got a strong mix of talent, and the aim is clear: to play smart, play tough, and represent Mumbai with intent and pride.'
Hailing from a cricketing background, with his father Dinesh Lad a respected coach and mentor to many Mumbai cricketers, Siddhesh grew up steeped in the game, training at Shivaji Park from an early age. In just his second First Class appearance in 2013, Lad hit twin fifties against Delhi, before playing a crucial knock of 88 in the 2015-16 final, leading Mumbai to their 41st Ranji title.
Commenting on Lad's ability as a batter and a spearhead, Abhishek Nayar, Team Mentor, said: 'Siddhesh is a natural leader. He's someone who reads the game well, absorbs pressure, and leads by example. He's played in every format, adapted to every role, and always delivered. That's what we're building here, players who reflect the ethos of Mumbai cricket: skill, grit, and quiet confidence.'
With Lad at the helm, the Royals are in the final phase of preparations for their league campaign. The team will play three warm-up matches against sister franchise Raigad Royals (from the Maharashtra Premier League) between May 27 and May 29, before beginning their T20 Mumbai League journey on June 4, when they take on Aakash Tigers at the Wankhede Stadium. Karun Nair Reveals 'Comfort' Factor Ahead Of Test Comeback: 'Rahul And Prasidh...'

Last Updated: Nair, after eight years, is set to solidify his place in the Indian Test team against England. He's comforted by the presence of childhood friends KL Rahul and Prasidh Krishna. As he seeks to capitalize on an opportunity that has arrived after eight years, Karun Nair says the presence of childhood friends KL Rahul and Prasidh Krishna brings a comforting familiarity to the Indian dressing room. The five-match Test series against England, starting on Friday, presents Karun with a chance to solidify his place in the team, years after becoming only the second Indian batter to score a triple century in Test cricket. 'I try to keep it very simple, always think about the positive, have certain goals in mind, visualize things and have real belief in what you visualize. 'Playing alongside Rahul and Prasidh is also a very comforting factor. We've played cricket for so many years since probably we were young kids and grew up together," Karun told BCCI in a video posted on its website. Karun and Rahul, both 33, have played age-group cricket together and have been close friends ever since. 'Life has come a full circle because I went out of the team in England and now I am coming back into the team in England. It's been a while and I embrace that." He was dropped from the Indian team in 2017. 'My first thought when I woke up (after being dropped) was I want to play Test cricket, I want to play for India again. That's probably what kept me going, kept me hungry and was the driving force to train and practice every day. 'I had a goal to play Test cricket again. Every day, every morning I used to wake up thinking what should I do to reach that goal. Never losing that belief and having that target to reach was something that helped me," he added. In the 2024–25 domestic season, Karun amassed 863 runs in nine matches at an average of 54, helping Vidarbha clinch their third Ranji Trophy title. The season revived his Test career as he made his return to the Indian Test side for the tour of England. 'Mentally I am more patient and I am more forgiving of myself. I have learnt to enjoy small things a little more and also not trying to be someone that I am not. I have tried to keep it very simple. I always think about positives, have certain goals in mind, visualize things and have real belief," Karun said. 'Feeling honoured to wear this jersey and honoured to be representing my country." Karun said the realisation of making the Indian team again came to him when he met the touring group. 'When I saw everyone for the first time, that was when I realised I am finally in the team. Till then, it was a wait for me to start feeling I have made it again," he said. 'It's been a few years, I used to watch everyone on TV and to be back again in this dressing room feels amazing." 'I enjoy the feeling with everyone, enjoy the feeling of wearing this jersey, just going out there and having fun with everyone in the group and trying our best to win games for our country." Rishabh Pant's love story with No. 5 - a batting romance born in 2016, blossoming at Headingley in Leeds

India's Rishabh Pant celebrates after scoring a century on day two of the first cricket test match between England and India at Headingley in Leeds, England, Saturday, June 21, 2025, (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) in Leeds: Back in 2016, a young Rishabh Pant , about to turn 19 and still finding his feet in the first-class setup, walked up to then Delhi head coach KP Bhaskar for a conversation regarding his batting position for the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season. The wicketkeeper-batter requested the coach to give him the No. 5 spot, who in return asked for runs. The two reached an agreement, and Pant held up his end of the bargain, amassing 972 runs in the season, which included four centuries (including one triple hundred) and two half-centuries. The role clarity before that memorable domestic season helped Pant score runs for fun, and he hasn't stopped since. The stages have changed, scenarios have been different, but Pant remained the same - an absolute freak with the bat in hand. There have been occasions where he has attracted criticism for his means and ways in the white-ball formats, but in red-ball, he has continued to be a freak. And that freak turns into a beast with clarity of thought, and he loves the No. 5 position. IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant opens up on chemistry with Shubman Gill and England challenge This series isn't the first time he has batted at his preferred number, but the clarity with which he spoke about his and Shubman Gill 's batting position before the series got underway was enough to gauge the thought process in his head and in the dressing room. And it wasn't a surprise that he delivered in the first innings of the series with a 178-ball 134, studded with 12 boundaries, laced with six sixes, and plenty of heart-in-the-mouth moments. He would lose his bat, shoe, balance, and shape but continued to find the runs like only he can. Different angles but the same intent—even if it came at the cost of not listening to his captain at the other end. Gill wouldn't advise him on what to do but kept throwing subtle one-liners. When Pant was approaching the 90s, Gill, sensing theatrics, asked his teammate, " Samne khelke bhagega, mai ready rahunga (Will you run after hitting straight, I will stay ready)?" " Nahi mai saamne nahi maarunga (No, I won't play straight)," came the crisp reply, and he went back into his crease next ball to dispatch Shoaib Bashir into the stands. Gill, like others in the dressing room, knows by now that he will play the only way he knows, but no one stops trying. Pant was caught on the stump-mic telling Joe Root about all the fielders near the boundary, but he went down on one knee and slog-swept Bashir for another maximum. England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith couldn't believe it; all Root could do was smile as the left-hander scratched the popping crease again to take guard for the next adventure. Yes, next adventure. Every delivery he faces is an event, and every knock he constructs is an adventure. An adventure not for the faint-hearted and an adventure only he can pull off. "The falling paddle sweep," as Ravi Shastri called it during commentary. An outrageous shot which only Pant could have even attempted, but the great Sachin Tendulkar saw a lot of cricketing intelligence there. "Rishabh's falling paddle sweep is not accidental. It is intentional and extremely clever. Going down with the shot allows him to get under the ball and scoop it over leg slip with control," the Little Master wrote in a post on social media platform X. Only Pant can clear the ropes comfortably with one hand coming off, only he can get praised by his skipper for ducking under a bouncer, and only he can deflate the opposition in a single session of audacious stroke play. Hundred No. 7, brought up with a one-handed six over mid-on, was a special one in Leeds. The celebration and the somersault entertained the crowd further as the showstopper put on another box-office performance. He is well and truly one-of-a-kind, and now with clarity of thought and at his favorite batting position, he would look to emulate that memorable 2016 domestic season in this English summer. 3011-day wait ends in heartbreak! Karun Nair falls for four-ball duck on Test comeback

Karun Nair (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: Eight long years — or 3,011 days to be exact — that's how long Karun Nair waited to walk out in an India Test jersey again. But the fairy tale comeback didn't unfold the way he had imagined. On his much-anticipated return to Test cricket, Karun lasted just four balls, dismissed for a duck. England captain Ben Stokes was the party spoiler. He delivered a full outswinger, wide of off stump — tempting Karun into a drive. But the right-hander wasn't fully committed to the shot. Instead of finding the gap, the ball flew off the bat and straight into the hands of Ollie Pope at short cover, who pulled off a spectacular catch — diving full stretch to his left, both hands overhead, nearly horizontal to the ground. Karun, who etched his name into Indian cricket history with a stunning triple century against England in Chennai back in December 2016, had last played a Test in 2017. Since then, he toiled away in domestic cricket, patiently waiting for a comeback. 'Dear cricket, give me one more chance,' he often reminded himself. Dominant India on Day 1!
