Heartbreaking details emerge after a father was allegedly stabbed to death in 'drug deal gone wrong' at Croydon Park

Daily Mail02-06-2025

A terrified neighbour has recalled the moment cops arrested a man after a father was allegedly stabbed to death in 'a drug deal gone horribly wrong'.
A 32-year-old man was arrested by police following the incident on Kembla Street at Croydon Park, in Sydney 's Inner West, after 5pm on Monday.
NSW Police described the scene as 'gruesome' and allege a man in his 50s was stabbed to death in a drug deal gone wrong.
Police were called to the residence following a concern for welfare report.
Superintendent Christine McDonald said the 32-year-old suspect was taken to Burwood Police Station where he was assisting cops with their inquiries.
No charges have been laid.
Superintendent McDonald confirmed police were 'treating this as a homicide'.
'This is a gruesome crime. The man's injuries are horrific,' Supt McDonald told reporters near the crime scene late on Monday.
'We believe this is a drug deal gone horribly wrong.
'We don't believe it to be domestic-related. We don't believe it to be gang-related.'
She said it was not yet known if the victim and the detained man knew each other, or whether anyone else was in the house at the time of the alleged killing.
A neighbour told Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday the dead man lived with his wife and children at the Croydon Park home for just a few months before the alleged attack.
'The neighborhood is feeling very unsettled. This is a really, really lovely quiet street,' she said.
'We do all know each other. Pretty much, we all know each other except for this particular house.
'They haven't lived here that long so we don't know much about them.
'We understand there was potentially two or three families living there because there's a really big granny flat in the background. There's multiple living areas there.'

The neighbour saw officers arrest a man in his 30s and did not believe he lived at the property.
'It was very confronting,' she said.
Superintendent McDonald praised responding officers, who she said detained the suspect before he could leave the scene.
'When we arrived, the 32-year-old male who we now have in custody at Burwood police station was on scene,' she said.
'We didn't give him any time to run away. We were here too quick.'

Adam Abdul-Hamid: How this mummy's boy grew up to be accused of the shocking gang rape that has horrified Australia - as more vile details of teenage girl's alleged ordeal emerge

Growing up with his Lebanese immigrant family in social housing in western Sydney, Adam Abdul-Hamid showed every sign of embracing the Aussie dream. Now the 19-year-old barber is accused of the shocking gang rape of a teenage girl. Abdul-Hamid - along with three other teens, aged 14, 16 and 17 at the time, who Daily Mail Australia can't name due to their age - is alleged to have assaulted and terrorised the victim in her car over a six-hour period on December 15. In total, the four face 64 sickening charges over the alleged attack, including multiple counts of rape and sexual assault, with the 16-year-old alone accused of raping her nine times during the ordeal. Dramatic police footage showed Abdul-Hamid being arrested at his Heckenberg home on Tuesday, while his family protested and swore. One of Abdul-Hamid's sisters screamed at police, 'don't sexual assault me', as she jostled with the officers. Detectives arrested the 17-year-old man, now aged 18, at a Sadleir property, also in Sydney's southwest, on the same day. The two other alleged offenders, a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old boy (who was 14 at the time), were arrested on December 20 and are also remanded in custody. Abdul-Hamid, described as a 'quiet' presence in the suburban cul-de-sac where he lived for years, has had an active online presence since he was about nine years old. Videos he posted to social media as a youngster showed him dancing, lip-syncing and kicking a footy, sometimes wearing his Sadleir Public School uniform or a Canterbury Bulldogs jersey. On one of his accounts, he proudly displayed a photo of himself hugging his mother tightly. As the self-described 'soulja of Allah' grew older, the content he shared changed to photos of him doing wheelies on a dirt bike on the streets of Sydney's west, working out, or showing off his physique with his hair tied up in his distinctive ponytail. Last year he started working as a barber at Blurry Blends Barbershop, a business apparently registered in his sister's name. The shop was located on Norfolk St in Liverpool, at the shopping centre where police say his alleged victim's ordeal began later that year. Social media accounts for the business have been scrubbed since Abdul-Hamid's arrest on Tuesday. In the December 15 incident, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly approached by a 16-year-old boy at 5.30pm at a shopping centre in Liverpool, 31km southwest of Sydney's CBD. The 'charismatic' 16-year-old allegedly followed the girl to her car and she reluctantly let him inside before he began sexually assaulting her,' police allege. A short time later, the male asked to be driven 5km to Wheat Park in Sadleir, to which the victim agreed on the understanding he would get out of the car when they arrived. At the park, two other males entered the car, and they also allegedly sexually assaulted the girl. A fourth male then arrived in another vehicle, and the alleged sexual assault continued as the girl was driven around 'erratically', with one of the alleged attackers at the wheel. The six-hour ordeal ended about 11.30pm when the males departed and left the girl in her car. The teenager immediately contacted a friend who took her to Liverpool Police Station to report the attack. 'It beggars belief that in this day and age men would think to act this way towards a girl,' said Sex Crime Squad commander Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty. 'The four of them [allegedly] acted together, creating fear on the victim, degrading her, whilst the others offended against her, and at times, there was more than one person offending against this poor young girl,' she added. 'They haven't stopped at any point during that six hours and said, "This is wrong" to any of their co-offenders. 'That's the difficult part to come to terms with - that four people could act together and keep going at that type of offending over such a long time.' Abdul-Hamid was listed to appear for the first time at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday morning. His solicitor Muhammad Tehseldar made no application for bail but said he would be making a release order application for Abdul-Hamid in coming days. Outside court, Mr Tehseldar said Abdul-Hamid maintained his innocence and it would be inappropriate to make any further comment. The case was adjourned to Campbelltown Local Court on August 13.

BREAKING NEWS Husband, 21, and wife, 19, who tried to kill step-mother in knife and hammer attack as they wore Poundland giraffe masks jailed for 24 years

A husband and wife who donned Poundland giraffe animal masks before attempting to kill his stepmother in a knife and hammer attack were jailed today for a total of 24 years. Wasif Hussain, 21 and his wife Nabela Tabassum, 19 attacked Arifa Nazmin at Hussain's family home because they were angry at being accused of not doing any chores and treating the house like a hotel. The pair snapped and launched the brutal assault on Ms Nazim after they were told to leave the property in Kings Norton, Birmingham. Video footage released by police showed the young couple browsing an aisle at a branch of the budget retailer before selecting a packet containing giraffe masks. The pair were also recorded fleeing Hussain's family home following the attack. In the frenzied attack, which was caught on a camera installed in the home, Hussain struck her head with a hammer, strangling, punching and stabbing her while Tabassum restrained her. Hussain and Tabassum had denied attempted murder but were convicted following a trial in March. Today Hussain was jailed for 15 years and while his wife received a nine-year custodial sentence after a judge heard the attack took place against a 'background of broken-down familial relations'. The trial at Birmingham Crown Court heard that the victim suffered a stab wound to her arms as well as defensive knife injuries but survived the January 2024 attack. The court heard the couple planned to 'burn the body', but Mrs Nazmin was able to lock herself in a room and call the police after she was attacked. Immediately after the attack the two defendants fled Birmingham, heading more than 100 miles north to Bolton, Greater Manchester, where they were tracked down and arrested by police early the following day. Sentencing the pair today, Judge Paul Farrer KC said: 'I have no doubt you were both well aware that what you embarked upon was seriously wrong. 'You attacked Mrs Nazmin in her own home. Following the attack she felt compelled to leave her home. 'This was an offence committed against a particular background by two young, immature individuals who are unlikely to commit serious incidents of violence again.' Prosecutor Rob Forrest told the court: 'This was a planned attempt to kill Mrs Nazmin in her own home. 'That attack took place against a background of broken-down familial relations.' The sentencing hearing was told the couple married in December 2023 after they met online and the attack took place within weeks of Tabassum moving into Hussain's family home. Mr Forrest alleged Tabassum 'clearly' knew what was going on when the pair bought two animal masks from Poundland on the day of the attack. The couple were captured on CCTV buying an aerosol can from a One Stop in Kings Norton two days before the attempted murder, which they intended to use in their plan to burn their victim's body, the court heard. Defence barrister for Hussain, Andreas O'Shea, said the man, who has 'significant autistic traits', was genuinely 'remorseful and regretful' about the attack. Mr O'Shea said: 'This young man, as he says, knows his actions were wrong. He is fully reminiscent of the horror of the situation. 'The stepmother came into their lives and initially it appears he was able to talk to her, able to get on with her. But then there began some difficulties between the victim and the defendant's wife which he had taken to heart.' The court heard that Hussain's mother took her own life when he was aged seven and he 'blamed' his father, who left her and started a relationship with Mrs Nazmin shortly before her death. Islam Khan, defence barrister for Tabassum, who held Mrs Nazmin down during the attack and passed the knife to her husband, said: 'She regrets, absolutely, what she did. 'If she were able to strongly speak to her husband - which she found herself in a difficult position - she wasn't, she would never find herself in that position and she is remorseful, sincerely.' The court heard that an IQ test placed Tabassum in the bottom one percent of the population. The young couple put on the masks and gloves before the attack, in which the victim suffered bruising, a wound to the back of her head from a blow using the hammer, and stab wounds to her arm and hand. The court heard that Mrs Nazmin's young daughter was in the house and saw her mother injured after the attack. Mr Forrest told the court of the impact on Mrs Nazmin, and said: 'She had flashbacks to when she was literally begging for her life in the kitchen. It came out of the blue for her.' In her victim impact statement, which was read in part to the court, Mrs Nazmin said: 'I still panic when the door is knocked, I can feel the fear in my body. 'I'm terrified they have returned to finish me off. I will live with this for the rest of my life.' Detective Inspector Laura Allen, of West Midlands Police, said: 'This was a calculated and frenzied attack on a defenceless woman using weapons including a knife and hammer. She was very lucky to have survived this attack. 'I would like to thank Sergeant Gareth Glass who worked tirelessly along with his team to gather vital evidence which ultimately led to Hussain and Tabassum's conviction. 'My thoughts are with the victim who continues to recover from the trauma of her experience.' Sean Kyne, deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS West Midlands said: 'This was a premeditated, frenzied attack on a woman in her own home. The fact the defendants wore animal masks no doubt added to the terror of her ordeal. 'Working with police, we were able to clearly show the level of planning which went into the attack. Clear CCTV evidence from the kitchen of the home also contradicted their accounts of the level of harm they intended to cause. 'I hope today's sentence affords the family some comfort as they come to terms with this dreadful attack.'
