HBCU AD lays out path for potential Division I move

As Tuskegee University continues to modernize its athletic infrastructure and celebrate record-setting achievements, the conversation around a potential move to NCAA Division I competition continues to linger around the HBCU. While the university has not made any formal declaration, Director of Athletics Reginald Ruffin acknowledged that the decision ultimately lies in the hands of President Dr. Mark Brown and the university's board of trustees.
"That will not be a decision alone by me," Ruffin told HBCU Gameday's Steven J. Gaither. "It's going to be President Mark Brown… what he wants to see in the next… three-year plan, his five-year plan-what he sees in athletics."
The buzz surrounding Tuskegee's future comes at a time when the university is seeing measurable success across multiple sports. Ruffin noted that during the 2024–25 academic year alone, Tuskegee played for seven conference championships and came away with three titles while finishing as runner-up in four others.
"That's a lot of championships," he emphasized.
There are currently 23 Division I HBCUs. Twelve of them are in the SWAC, with eight residing in the MEAC and three others in non-HBCU leagues. For Tuskegee, a move up would mean not only meeting NCAA requirements in sports sponsorship and scholarships but also sustaining success and funding at a higher level.
Ruffin emphasized that the university's top priority is maintaining full support for its current programs.
"You have to also make sure you're maintaining your sports, and not only maintaining sports-you gotta be supporting your sports," he said.
According to Ruffin, both President Brown and former interim president Dr. Charlotte Morris made full athletic funding a priority-setting the foundation for what could be a long-term trajectory toward Division I. That administrative support has paid dividends according to Ruffin.
However, Ruffin made clear that for now, Tuskegee remains focused on building where it is-with one eye on the future. "For now we're just going to continue to sell out the crowd, and we have to go play FCS schools and be your largest attendance when we play those schools - until the president and the administration, decide, hey, it's time to to make that next step,' Ruffin said. 'But right now, Steven, I think we're grounded where we're planted and we're planted where we grounded. And we are just going to do what we can to continue building the legacy of Tuskegee University,
With a revitalized campus, major facility upgrades, and growing support from alumni and the community, the foundation is being laid for the university to make a serious evaluation. But Ruffin reiterated that such a move must align with the university's strategic vision-not just athletic ambition.
For now, Tuskegee University remains one of the most successful and tradition-rich programs in HBCU athletics. Whether that legacy will one day extend to the Division I level remains to be seen, but the infrastructure, leadership, and success metrics are increasingly pointing toward the possibility.

Starting 25th in the 27-car field, Dixon capitalized on a first-lap caution, diving into the pits after David Malukas went off track. Six-time series champion Dixon ran a bold, off-sequence strategy, stretching fuel masterfully while still showing strong pace. The gamble didn't quite pay off. Pretty much out of the championship, so nothing to lose.' Siegel Scores Top 10 After Busy Week After a turbulent week off track, Nolan Siegel delivered a timely performance on it at Road America. Following a public apology, along with one from his Arrow McLaren team, for salty remarks made on the team radio about Scott McLaughlin and Team Penske during the previous week's race at World Wide Technology Raceway, the 19-year-old responded with a career-boosting drive to a season-best eighth place at Road America. 'This is a nice end to this week,' Siegel said. 'Nice to move on from everything from last week and ended on a high. This has been a much-needed weekend. Ultimately, this is something we can build off of. 'I've had a lot of bad weeks where everyone leaves upset, and it's not a good feeling. It's nice to kind of turn that around.' The results marks Siegel's third career top 10 and second on a natural road course. The other came with a ninth-place finish May 4 at Barber Motorsports Park. His career best finish remains seventh in 2023 at WWTR. With momentum finally swinging in his favor and The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the all-new 2026 Passport next on Sunday, July 6, a road-course event that teammate Pato O'Ward won last year, Siegel remains optimistic. 'I've been strong on the road courses this year,' he said. 'Barber, here, Mid-Ohio was a pretty good one for all of us last year. So, we're going to have a strong car, I know that. 'The goal is to just do better every weekend and maybe start a little further up than we did this weekend. I think there's a lot of potential there. I'm excited given how much potential this group seems to have. I think once that starts to come out, the results start to come and just kind of get the ball rolling.' INDY NXT Race Completed Without Push To Pass Caio Collet secured his first victory of the season in Sunday's INDY NXT by Firestone race at Road America. He did so without the aid of Push to Pass, the overtaking assist feature that wasn't available to any of the 19 cars in the field due to a technical problem. INDYCAR is evaluating a car-side processing issue that prevented use of Push to Pass. No competitive advantage was available to any entry as the full field was impacted. Following internal analysis, INDYCAR will work to ensure any necessary remedies are in place before the next race. Odds and Ends The eventual NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion has finished in the top four in seven of the last eight years at Road America. Josef Newgarden finished second in his 2017 championship-winning season and third in 2019. Dixon was also third in his 2018 title-winning campaign and won Race 1 in 2020. Palou won at Road America in his 2021 and 2023 championship-winning seasons and finished fourth last year. Will Power's 19th-place finish in 2022 is the lone exception. The impressive statistics keep piling up for race winner Palou. This was the 50th top-five finish from his 90 career starts, a strike rate of 56 percent. Honda begins the season 9-for-9, with six wins from Palou and three from Kyle Kirkwood's No. 27 Siemens Honda. The manufacturer's unbeaten streak is 10 straight wins, dating to Colton Herta's victory in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda in last year's season finale at Nashville Superspeedway. Kyffin Simpson earned his second top-six finish in the last three races by finishing sixth in the No. 8 Ridgeline Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. He finished fifth in Detroit. recommended

Nets FA Cam Thomas likely to sign deal worth $25 million annually

The Brooklyn Nets have plenty of decisions to make this offseason as they seek to significantly improve the roster before the beginning of the 2025-26 NBA season. Brooklyn not only has to think about who they will be taking in the 2025 NBA Draft, but they also have to worry about what they will do in free-agency. "Several sources have indicated he's likely to command a deal as high as $100 million over four years, well in with first rank shooting guards at his age," NetsDaily reported on what Nets guard Cam Thomas is expected to earn in free-agency this summer. Thomas is a restricted free-agent this summer after spending his first four seasons in Brooklyn after being taken with the 27th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft out of LSU. "Moreover, those same sources see Thomas signing as a priority for the Nets," NetsDaily continued. "Because of the Nets monopoly on cap space and the new CBA, the Nets aren't likely to have much competition for him." Many around the NBA have weighed in on what Thomas should command on the free-agent market, but it seems that he's likely to sign for somewhere between $20 million and $25 million per season. One fact to consider for anyone predicting Thomas' next contract is that he is a restricted free-agent, meaning that the Nets have more leverage than they would with an unrestricted free-agent thanks to the offer sheet matching mechanic. Granted, if a rival team wants Thomas bad enough, they could put forth an offer that Brooklyn may not want to match and Thomas would be playing with that team as a result. However, unless something significantly changes between now and when free-agency is in full-swing, the Nets are one of few teams that would be able to offer Thomas more than the Non-taxpayer Mid-Level Exception (NTMLE) of $14.105 million. Given the nature of how most teams won't be able to spend much money in free-agency this summer, Thomas could opt to sign with Brooklyn for the financial security.

Former 90's Indiana Pacer began his career at an HBCU

As the Indiana Pacers stand one win away from its first ever NBA Championship we started thinking about one of their solid backup players from the 1990s. Before Haywoode Workman became a trusted NBA guard-and later an NBA referee-his basketball story began at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). He started his college career at Winston-Salem State University before transferring to Oral Roberts University. Workman played his freshman season at Winston-Salem in 1984. He then moved to Oral Roberts, where he sat out the 1985–86 season due to transfer rules. Over the next three seasons, he became a standout player. He averaged 17.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.9 steals per game. To this day, Workman ranks among Oral Roberts' all-time leaders in steals, assists, and scoring. In 2003, the school honored him with induction into its athletics Hall of Fame. Workman was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the 1989 NBA Draft. He went on to play eight seasons in the league, including four memorable years with the Indiana Pacers. During his time in Indiana, Workman became known for his steady leadership and court vision. He averaged 5.5 points and 3.9 assists per game in 359 total appearances. After his playing days, he remained close to the game. In 2008, he joined the NBA's officiating crew-making him one of the few former players to transition into a referee role. Tonight, the Indiana Pacers face the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. If Indiana pulls off the win, it will mark the team's first NBA championship. Veterans like Workman, Reggie Miller, and others will be among the proud alumni celebrating. For Workman, it would be a full-circle moment-cheering for the franchise where he made his biggest impact.
