Cooperation agreement signed to equip Liwa Science and Innovation Centre with robotics
Sohar: The Directorate General of Education in North Al Batinah Governorate on Sunday signed a cooperation agreement with Ooredoo to supply Liwa Science and Innovation Centre with a set of robotics, supporting educational objectives and their application in teaching and training.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Walid Talib Al Hashmi, Director General of the Directorate General of Education in North Al Batinah, and Aisha Salem Al Shuaili, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Ooredoo.
Al Hashmi emphasised that this agreement represents a significant step in supporting educational initiatives, effectively contributing to the development of students' skills in programming and artificial intelligence. He added that these robotics will provide a practical and stimulating training environment, enabling students to compete in local, regional, and international robotics and AI competitions, thereby enhancing the governorate's students' presence in scientific and innovative forums.
On her part, Aisha Al Shuaili explained that this initiative aligns with Ooredoo's strategy to support local communities and enhance Omani youth's capabilities in technical fields. It aims to build a competent generation capable of meeting the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) through partnerships that foster integration between the public and private sectors.

Unesco Chair Aflaj contract extended
NIZWA: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has extended the contract of the Unesco Chair in Aflaj Studies at Nizwa University for another four years under the new name: Unesco Chair in Aflaj Studies and Socio-hydrology. The extension of the contract affirms the scientific role the University of Nizwa plays in documenting traditional and cultural knowledge and its sustainable management, particularly with regard to the Omani aflaj system, an ancient irrigation system that combines environmental, social and cultural aspects. Dr Abdullah bin Saif al Ghafri, Professor of the Unesco Chair in Aflaj Studies and Sociohydrology said: 'The change of the name comes in response to global scientific trends towards socio-hydrology, an interdisciplinary field that studies the relationship between human societies and their water resources. It highlights water management, water justice and the behaviour of individuals and institutions towards water as well as the associated cultural and developmental dimensions. He pointed out that since its launch in 2021, the Unesco Chair in Aflaj Studies has achieved a number of scientific and academic accomplishments including the publication of dozens of research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, the introduction of specialised university courses on aflaj, the production of radio and documentary programmes and the provision of field consultations for farmers and aflaj managers. He added that the University of Nizwa has played a pivotal role in supporting the project since its inception, providing basic funding and academic and logistical support, in addition to support from ministries and government agencies, such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the Diwan of Royal Court, the Oman Water Society, among others. He stated that the Chair continues to expand its network of research collaborations with universities and scientific centres in several countries, including Japan, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Morocco and Iran. This strengthens its scientific presence internationally and facilitates the exchange of knowledge about traditional water systems. He pointed out that the Omani aflaj system is receiving increasing attention from international researchers, due to its natural sustainability and harmony between humans and the environment. Omani cookbook wins two global awards at Gourmand event
By OUR CORRESPONDENT Muscat – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has won two international awards for its publication The Omani Cuisine at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards held in Lisbon, Portugal. The Gourmand awards are among the most prominent global events celebrating the best books in culinary arts and food culture. The ministry's participation showcased Oman's culinary heritage through its book, produced in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University. At a ceremony attended by culinary experts and industry figures from around the world, Oman won the 'Best Book in the World' award in the Culinary Diplomacy category and 'Best Cookbook in the World' award in the Intangible Cultural Heritage category. Officials said the achievement highlights efforts to document and promote Omani cuisine as an integral part of the nation's cultural and heritage identity. Asma bint Salem al Hajri, Tourism Promotion Expert at the ministry, said the participation reflects ongoing work to enhance the reputation of Omani cuisine regionally and internationally. She noted that traditional Omani food plays a key role in cultural tourism and showcases the depth of Omani civilisation. The ministry's activities at the event included a visual presentation and a tasting session, giving attendees insight into Omani dishes, their ingredients and preparation. The event was a platform to introduce the diversity and authenticity of Omani food to new audiences and make it a part of the sultanate's tourism offering.
