Emalahleni Municipality warns residents about RDP house scams
Emalahleni Local Municipality is alerting residents to be aware of scammers fraudulently selling RDP houses, particularly in Siyanqoba.
These scammers use social media platforms like Facebook and emails to lure victims, often posing as owners with fake green identity books.
According to the municipality, they have received numerous complaints from community members who have fallen prey to these scams. The legal department is working to open cases with SAPS for reported incidents.
It's crucial to note that government-funded RDP houses are not for sale and cannot be legally transferred without proper approval from the Department of Human Settlements.
Residents who have been scammed or suspect fraudulent activity are urged to report it to SAPS and inform the Housing Department at the Municipality.
To report suspicious activity, residents can call the municipality on 0800 204 228 or visit www.emalahleni.gov.za.

In a recent major breakthrough, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Kidnapping Task Team tracked down a wanted Mozambican kidnapping kingpin to an apartment complex in Fourways, Johannesburg. The operation is part of an ongoing investigation into the kidnapping of a Pakistani businessman from Pretoria West, who remains missing. His family has received a ransom demand, and SAPS continues its search for his safe return. The high-risk tracing operation began at a residential estate in Carlswald, Midrand, where officers arrested two suspects and seized two vehicles — a luxury Mercedes-Benz and a silver Mitsubishi Pajero — believed to have been used in previous kidnappings. From Midrand, the investigation led the team to Fourways. Upon arrival, they came under fire and returned shots in a deadly confrontation. One suspect was fatally wounded during the shootout. He was later identified as 40-year-old Mauro Mucambe Junior, a fugitive wanted by Mozambican authorities in connection with several kidnapping cases. A warrant for his arrest was issued by the Maputo Police in August 2024. Police recovered an unlicensed firearm, 10 rounds of ammunition, four mobile phones, and four bank cards from the scene. The SAPS confirmed that since January 2024, the Anti-Kidnapping Task Team has arrested over 170 suspects involved in ransom-related abductions, rescued more than 100 victims — mostly in Gauteng — and recovered more than R1.2 million in ransom money. Over 40 vehicles used in the commission of these crimes have also been confiscated. This latest case also ties into the recent breakthrough in the murder investigation of Olorato Mongale. The same task team helped track down a key suspect, Philangenkosi Makhanya. Another suspect, Bongani Mthimkhulu, is still at large. SAPS reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling kidnapping syndicates operating in Gauteng and beyond, urging the public to report suspicious activity. Tragic Chatsworth crash claims life of man in fiery vehicle blaze
A man died in a crash on the M1 Higginson Highway on Saturday. Image: ALS Paramedics / Facebook A man believed to be in his forties tragically lost his life in a horrific crash on the M1 Higginson Highway Eastbound, just before the Havenside robots in Chatsworth, on Saturday evening. ALS Paramedics reported that the incident occurred just before 6pm. Multiple ambulances and advanced life support teams responded to the scene. 'Initial reports were that a vehicle had somehow lost control and collided with a tree before the vehicle burst into flames,' ALS Paramedics Garrith Jamieson said. On arrival, paramedics found that the vehicle was already on fire, and the eThekwini Fire Department was actively working to extinguish the blaze. 'The driver, believed to be the only occupant in the vehicle, unfortunately, was unable to get out of the vehicle in time and passed away on the scene,' the paramedics said. Divisional Commander Nkulumo Dube of eThekwini Municipality Fire & Emergency Services confirmed that a fire engine was dispatched just before 6pm on Saturday to attend to the crash, where firefighters found a bakkie engulfed in flames after colliding with trees. Standerton Regional Court sentences convicted serial rapist to another 25 years in jail A convicted serial rapist serving more than three life sentences and over 100 years has been sentenced to an additional 25 years in jail. The Standerton Regional Court sentenced Zakhele Isaac Mahlangu (44) for raping a 21-year-old woman on May 7, 2016. The victim was on her way to a hiking spot along the Secunda road (R546) near Charl Cilliers when Mahlangu offered her a lift in a white vehicle at about 14:00. 'The suspect claimed he was heading in the same direction,' said Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane. Along the way Mahlangu diverted onto a gravel road, claiming that he was going to pick up other people on a nearby farm. ALSO READ: 11-year-old girl and her elder sibling shot near Hazyview He then stopped the vehicle at a dumping site and covered the victim's face with a hat before physically assaulting her. 'The rapist then tied her up using a seatbelt, forcibly removed her clothing and raped her multiple times without protection, despite her resistance and cries for help,' explained Ndubane. Mahlangu then removed the vehicle's number plates, threw the victim's belongings out of the car and abandoned her in an isolated area. The victim got another lift to Charl Cilliers where she reported the incident and was referred to the Standerton Police Station for further investigation. The police took her to hospital for medical examination. In a dramatic twist of events, the victim later saw the suspect, who was already in jail, being escorted by prison wardens at a hospital,' said Ndubane. 'She immediately alerted the police who acted swiftly to investigate,' added Ndubane. The court ordered that the sentence run concurrently with the other sentences that Mahlangu is already serving. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm. Mahlangu's trail of criminal records was laid bare before the court. He was sentenced to 60 days with an option of R600 fine for burglary in September 1998. Mahlangu was also sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for a rape in October 2002. After being released from jail, Mahlangu was again sentenced to three months' imprisonment and given a R1 500 fine for assault in April 2013. In August 2021 the Secunda Sexual Offences Court found Mahlangu guilty of raping several women and stealing their belongings. His reign of terror included kidnapping which dated back to 2014. The modus operandi that Mahlangu used over the years was to offer lifts to women. He then raped them and stole from them. He has faced 14 counts that included kidnapping, rape and theft. The court imposed three life sentences and 108 years on Mahlangu at the time. The latest sentence coincides with the latest Mpumalanga crime statistics which placed GBVF as the most-prevalant crime in the province.
