Air India decides to retrofit 13 legacy A321 ceo planes

New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI) Amid supply chain woes, Air India has decided to retrofit its 13 legacy A321 ceo planes that were earlier planned to be taken out of service while the first of the airline's legacy Boeing 787-8 aircraft will go for retrofit in July.
Air India, which is slowly expanding its fleet and networks, has a total of 191 planes, including 64 wide-bodies and 127 narrow-bodies.
Airline's CEO and MD Campbell Wilson told PTI that the first batch of the B 787s will go in for retrofit in July as there has been a little bit of push back because of certification delay of seats.
"By the end of this financial year, hopefully about 68 per cent of the wide- body fleet will be upgraded and the complete fleet will be upgraded sometime in calendar 2027," he said in an interview.
There are 27 legacy B787-8s with Air India.
The carrier has already started the heavy refresh programme of the legacy B777s and two of them are already back in service. Heavy refresh of an aircraft includes having new carpets, seat covers, cushions and fixing broken seats.
The refresh of these planes is expected to complete by the end of this year.
According to Wilson, the supply chain situation is getting progressively better.
"I believe 65-68 per cent of the narrow-body fleet has been upgraded. We are eyeing to complete all of them by the end of this year. We decided to extend the life of 13 aircraft (A321 ceos) that previously were to leave the fleet and those will be upgraded in the early part of next year.
"Effectively, the narrow-body fleet (upgradation) will be completed this year," he said.
In the wide-body category, Air India now has 6 A350s, 19 B777-300 ERs, 5 B777-200 LRs, 7 B787-9s and 27 B787-8s. Among the narrow-body fleet are 6 A319s, 94 A320 neos, 4 A320 ceos, 13 A321 ceos and 10 A321 neos.
Aircraft deliveries as well as upgradation are getting delayed for many airlines, including Air India, mainly due to global supply chain woes.
"I think it (supply chain situation) is getting progressively better. There are still constraints in a number of areas... it is progressively getting better over the years but it will still take I believe until 2029 or 2030," Wilson said.
According to him, the bottlenecks are different for different aircraft.
"It is supply challenge for engines on narrow-body aircraft... there is the recovery of Boeing 737 programme to its previous pace. It is getting faster and meeting the milestones. They will take (for) catch up... things are just progressively easing up," the Air India CEO and MD said.

Air India on Saturday (June 22, 2025) said it has started releasing the interim compensation of ₹25 lakh each to the families of the deceased and survivors of the June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash. The airline said a team of trained psychologists and doctors has been deployed in Ahmedabad to provide trauma counselling and psychological support to the affected families or individuals. The team of medical personnel, including nurses and a pharmacist, has been deployed to address ongoing or emerging health needs, Air India said in a statement. 'The interim compensation began being released from June 20, with three families having received payments so far, and the remaining claims being processed,' Air India said. The airline had on June 14 announced that it will provide an interim compensation of ₹25 lakh or approximately GBP 21,500, to the families of each of the deceased and survivors of the airline's Boeing 787-8 plane crash in Ahmedabad to help address immediate financial needs. This is in addition to the compensation of ₹1 crore announced by the parent company, Tata Sons. Centralised helpdesk Air India said a centralised helpdesk, active since June 15, has been assisting families in processing claims for the interim compensation. This single-window system ensures faster documentation and helps initiate compensation procedures promptly, it stated. Air India said it has also been reaching out to those who were injured and the families of those who lost their lives on the ground to initiate the compensation process for them. The families are also being assisted, including during DNA identification, the airline said, adding that when the mortal remains are released by the hospital, at least one caregiver accompanies each family to facilitate the transportation as well as funerals, while ensuring the dignity and utmost respect for the deceased and their loved ones. Families are also being provided other comprehensive financial assistance during this difficult time, covering travel, accommodation, medical and funeral expenses, with additional needs addressed promptly, Air India added.

India's strong economic growth and favourable demographics are driving rapid adoption of advanced technologies like 5G, smart devices, and AI-powered solutions, he said. "India is a very important market for MediaTek because it is a very huge consumption story,we can see the demographics -- which is a very young population, we can see our economy growing very fast. All these components are making the market very attractive for us," Jain told PTI. Beyond smartphones, MediaTek's chipsets power many devices, including smart TVs, tablets, chromebooks, routers, and the smart home segment. Jain noted that the company is now expanding into new verticals such as automotive, recently partnering with JioThings to develop 4G smart clusters for the two-wheeler EV segment, and supplying infotainment systems for cars like Skoda Slavia and Tata Punch EV. The company is also exploring opportunities in satellite communications, with its chipsets poised to support evolving requirements as India's satellite and IoT ecosystem grows. Jain outlined MediaTek's commitment to further investment in the Indian market and continued expansion of its engineering teams. The company views its Indian R&D centres as extensions of its global operations, enabling it to address multiple technology verticals from within the country.
