3 Things That Prove Car Buyers Don't Want EVs to Be Weird
The first mass-market electric vehicle (EV) was the Nissan LEAF, introduced in 2010, and it seems Nissan's goal was to separate the LEAF from gas-powered models by looking strange. The solid proboscis front fascia, the amorphous headlights that crept up to the A-pillars, the odd round rear haunches, and the protruding butt all made for an almost alien-like craft. And that was just the exterior. For more than a decade, automakers have tried to make electric vehicles stand out by making them… well, weird. Early EVs often looked and felt like they were from another planet. It was all part of a strategy: If you're going to drive the car of the future, shouldn't it look futuristic?
But a funny thing happened on the way to mass EV adoption: car buyers balked. Turns out, most people don't want to drive a pod on wheels or relearn how to operate a vehicle just because it's electric. What consumers really want are EVs that fit seamlessly into their lives, not ones that scream, "I'm different!" Here are three things that prove car buyers want EVs to be familiar, rather than looking like weird rolling spacecraft.
In the early EV days, standing out was the name of the game. It wasn't just the LEAF that worked too hard to be noticed. The BMW i3 was easily the brand's least fetching model with some of the worst bodywork we've ever laid eyes on. Sure, it looked like nothing else on the road, but that's not always a good thing. The original Toyota Prius-while not an EV but a hybrid pioneer-looked like Paul Bunyan was insulted by its environmental efforts and stepped on the nose of a once normal-looking subcompact sedan.
But as more buyers entered the EV market, especially mainstream consumers who weren't early adopters or tech nerds, it became clear that outlandish designs were a turnoff. Today, many of the best-selling EVs are the ones that look like regular cars. They prove you can ditch the gas without ditching good taste.
Take the Ford F-150 Lightning, for example. It looks nearly identical to the gas-powered F-150, the best-selling vehicle in America for decades. The typical bystander can't distinguish between the two, and that's no accident. Ford specifically chose to preserve the familiar shape and utility of the truck because it knows its customers don't want to drive a spaceship; they want to haul lumber, go camping, and tow boats, just like a gas truck owner.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 may look sleek and futuristic, but the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6-both of which sell well-strike a balance between distinctive and practical, without being too radical. Even Tesla, a brand known for innovation, has stuck with relatively minimalist, subdued exterior styling on its most successful models, the Model 3 and Model Y. They're clean and modern, yes, but not weird. Okay, so there's the Cybertruck, but we all know how that's going. Then there's the 3rd-generation Nissan LEAF, a conventional-looking modern crossover that shed all of its old weirdness. If that's not enough proof, consider the new crop of EVs: the Honda Prologue, the restyled Toyota bZ, the Chevy Blazer EV, the Hummer EV, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. These are EVs meant to look like real cars, and that's the hot trend now.
If you think that some of the cabins in EVs were annoying and strange, you're not alone. One of the more frustrating trends in early EVs was the push to reinvent the wheel-literally and figuratively-when it came to controls. Carmakers, perhaps trying to emphasize that EVs were different, often went overboard with gimmicky interfaces. The first Nissan LEAF's bizarre interior looked like it came out of a '90s B sci-fi flick with its doughy white steering wheel and the orb-like shifter. It's the kind of stuff that makes the ovular 1996 Ford Taurus cabin look conventional.
It also seems that numerous EV manufacturers thought their vehicles should have a tablet-sized center screen that controlled everything from the radio to the air vents. How about when Tesla eliminated stalks and buttons altogether in favor of a touch-and-swipe interface? For a while, EV cabins felt more like iPads on wheels than traditional cars. The result for drivers was often frustration with the unfamiliarity and the steep learning curve. Minimalism isn't always a good thing, tantamount to eyeglass frames that clamp on the nose with no temples to grab. Even Tesla's controversial decision to remove traditional turn signal stalks in the updated Model S and Model X has drawn widespread criticism. Many drivers are simply not ready to rewire their muscle memory every time they drive.
Now, there appear to be more EVs that utilize physical controls, relatively standard shift knobs, and ergonomics that contribute to intuitive operation. The Chevy Blazer EV is one of them. It has big screens, yes, but switchgear to complement it. Hyundai and Kia have smartly kept a mix of physical and digital controls, allowing for a user experience that feels both modern and comfortable. The interior of the Honda Prologue is about as conventional as they get. If you were to get inside without knowing it's an EV, you'd never guess by looking at the dash, center stack, and center console. It has a normal-looking steering wheel, big stalk controls, and plenty of buttons and knobs for audio and climate. The lesson here is simple: car buyers might be open to new powertrains, but they don't want to relearn how to drive. Familiarity builds comfort, and comfort builds sales.
Another clue that buyers want familiarity in their EVs is the transition away from names that were meant to set EVs apart from gas models. The Mercedes-Benz EQS and the Volkswagen ID series stand out the most. Both naming conventions seemed to have backfired. The EQS sedan and SUV don't carry the same panache as the S-Class or GLS-Class, as much as the electric versions try to follow in the footsteps of their gas-powered stablemates. VW's ID series is just plain awkward, especially when paired with non-words like ID.Every1 and ID.2all.
Even Toyota misfired with its hard-to-remember bZ4X name. Once you could finally memorize the name, you realized you didn't know which letters were uppercase or lowercase. Nobody should have to think about that. Now, it's just called bZ, and Toyota might do away with that shortly. Smarter name choices by manufacturers included the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Kona Electric, and the Chevrolet Blazer EV, all recognized model names with electric labels attached to them. It's not just ditching what's strange, it's capitalizing on what has already worked.
In the EV race, it has taken only a little over a decade for automakers to figure out that departing too much from what's familiar is bad and that radical reinvention isn't always the way to win hearts or wallets. As EVs begin to feel more like the cars people already love-visually, ergonomically, and functionally-they're proof that making the kind of improvements people care about results in better sales. Of course, EV buyers don't want their vehicles to be boring. They just don't want them to be weird. Give them something familiar, with all the benefits of electric driving and none of the alienation, and they're on board. Onlookers might say, "That's electric?" because they can't tell the difference, and that just might be the best kind of compliment.

Kia EV4
One of the many remarkable things about Tesla is that so much of its growth has been built on a bodystyle that had seemingly long since gone out of fashion. The success the Tesla Model 3 has had as a fairly traditional – perhaps even old-fashioned – low saloon defies logic when every other car maker is packing its range full of crossovers and SUVs, backfilled by evergreen hatchbacks. There have been other electric saloons, most notably the BMW i4, but among a sea of electric crossovers and hatchbacks flooding the market, the number of true Model 3 rivals barely makes a puddle. The Kia EV4 is the brand's first electric saloon and, as a global model from a car maker with one of the industry's better electric car ranges in its breadth and quality, its big range and attractive price allow it to be considered a true Model 3 rival. Even so, given Kia's global footprint and the need to tailor models to different markets, the company hasn't gone all in on the EV4 as a saloon and is also offering it as a hatchback. This will be built in Europe, the first Kia electric car to do so at its Slovakia plant. Kia UK recognises that the Model 3 is very much onto something, so this saloon version of the EV4 will be offered in the UK as well to make sure Tesla doesn't have the electric saloon segment all to itself. It's the saloon we're testing in Kia's native Korea, where the EV4 has gone on sale first. Even Kia design boss Karim Habib admits the design of the EV4 saloon is 'polarising' although he loves what his team has created and has set out to 'redefine what a saloon can be'. It certainly beats the Model 3 for visual interest. The EV4 has echoes of a Lamborghini at the front end in how the angles of the windscreen and bonnet are almost parallel. Then, at the rear, there is more of a long-tail design, which helps give a super-slippery drag coefficient of just 0.23, a best-in-class figure. Despite how atypical it is from a normal saloon, it is still recognisable as a Kia and fits within the wider range. Habib says the EV4 was originally planned to be only a hatch and the idea for the saloon came later. I like the boldness of it. After a while, the shock factor subsides and you are left to admire so many little exterior design details; it's the kind of car you want to touch and run your hand over to follow the shapes and lines. It's certainly not a Toyota Camry. The EV4 saloon is marginally longer than a Model 3, at 4730mm, and 30cm longer than the EV4 hatchback. The boot of the saloon is 490 litres to the 435 litres of the hatchback. The interior is largely recognisable from the excellent cabin of the EV3 but with a few distinctive elements of its own. The nearly flat floor really comes into its own in the saloon to make it all feel so light and spacious, particularly in the rear. The GT Line trim of our test car also brought with it some nice ribbed seat materials that act as a further point of difference and they're super-comfortable. More broadly, Kia has found a nice balance between technology and screens and physical switches and buttons, with the EV4's switchgear and major controls all sited in intuitive places. There is a pleasing heft and quality to everything too and the materials look and feel modern. The EV4 is a platform twin of the Kia EV3 and the two have very similar specs. It uses a 400V version of the firm's E-GMP architecture for electric vehicles (the larger Kia EV6 and Kia EV9 models use an 800V version) and is offered with either a or 81.4kWh battery. A front-mounted electric motor with 201bhp and 209lb ft powers both options and the 0-62mph time is between 7.4sec and 7.7sec, depending on the battery and bodystyle combination. The EV3 has a lot of objective qualities but to drive it lacks some sparkle. It doesn't do anything wrong; you're just looking for a bit more character. And that's what the EV4 provides – a bit more character – which is mostly a result of you sitting lower. Given the vast majority of electric cars are crossovers of one shape or size, it is a novelty at first to sit much lower in the EV4. It comes across as a bit racier and you feel more connected to the road than in the EV3. You can nip and dart around the traffic more and find more pleasure even in suburban traffic. The power delivery is just right and the accelerator pedal has a happy knack of knowing how much 'go' you're looking for. There are different driving modes – Eco, Normal and Sport – and this is a rare mainstream EV where Sport mode does actually make it feel a bit sportier, rather than simply faster with more heft to the steering, sharper responses and more power from the motor. Our Korean test roads were flat and lacking in the kind of corners where you can really get to know the car. The ride was comfortable, more on the soft side than the firm, and the limits of grip were never reached. It still felt that it had more of an edge than the EV3, although not exactly transformative in character. The steering felt a bit springy and odd immediately off centre and it could have done with a more natural feel to it, yet it was precise enough and the EV4 proved an easy car to place. A different chassis tune will be given to European-spec EV4s so some of these impressions should be taken with a pinch of salt. The longest range on offer for the EV4 is from the saloon with the larger battery, which offers 391 miles. With the smaller battery, the EV4 saloon has a 267-mile range. In the hatchback, the small battery gives 255 miles and the larger battery 367 miles. These are all claimed figures. A DC fast charge from 10% to 80% takes around half an hour. The range is a real highlight of the EV4. We were getting an indicated 356 miles on a warm day over a route made up of largely of faster motorway driving. Its efficiency seems to be a notable improvement over the EV3's to that end. There's no pricing for the EV4 yet but it's expected to be priced and positioned alongside the EV3 and with the same trims, starting at around £36,000 for the Long Range model. The EV4 is a good electric car and a good car too. It has bold looks and an excellent interior – and it is some clever and more inspired chassis tuning away from being a car you'd recommend as much for the way it drives as the way it looks. The hatchback is inevitably going to be the stronger seller, but whatever that car ends up being, even on looks alone the saloon feels like a model in its own right rather than a derivative. However niche it may end up being, it is still one of the more notable and interesting additions to the electric car world. ]]>

Senate Republicans cannot force US Postal Service to scrap EVs, parliamentarian says
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Senate Republicans cannot force the U.S. Postal Service to scrap thousands of electric vehicles and charging equipment in a massive tax and budget bill, the Senate parliamentarian said late on Sunday. The U.S. Postal Service currently has 7,200 electric vehicles, made up of Ford e-Transit vehicles and specially built Next Generation Delivery Vehicles built by Oshkosh Defense. USPS warned on June 13 that scrapping the electric vehicles would cost it $1.5 billion, including $1 billion to replace its current fleet of EVs and $500 million in EV infrastructure rendered useless. Elon Musk Announces Launch of New Business Venture
It's official: Tesla is in the robotaxi industry. After revealing that Tesla would begin rolling out autonomous cabs this year, Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk announced the company is officially launching it's robotaxi service on Sunday, June 22. In a post on X, Musk revealed that the robotaxis will debut in Austin, Texas, and customers will pay a flat fee of $4.20. "The (Tesla AI) robotaxi launch begins in Austin this afternoon with customers paying a $4.20 flat fee!" Musk exclaimed. With the launch, Tesla will now look to make up ground on Waymo, which is the current king of the industry. Waymo claims to have taken 10 million paid rides in all and services several major cities, including Austin, where Tesla is debuting on Sunday. Meanwhile, Amazon is also expected to get into the industry this year. The mega corporation spent $1.2 billion to acquire Zoox about five years ago and it has since built a plant in Silicon Valley that is expected to produce 10,000 robotaxis per year.
