TGSPDCL CMD pitches for sustainable energy practices
Hyderabad: On the eve of World Environment Day, TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Faruqui appealed to people to adapt energy saving, sustainable practices.
The official asserted that conserving energy is an important way to reduce strain on the environment. 'Replacing incandescent or CFL bulbs with LED lights will reduce electricity consumption by 75-80 per cent. Set ceiling fans to optimal speeds and air conditioners with temperatures between 24-26°C, as recommended by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), and clean filters monthly to reduce energy use,' he said.
He suggested the use of BEE Star-Rated Appliances with high-star ratings, such as for refrigerators, ACs, and washing machines, which are designed to consume less electricity. 'Installing solar water heaters or rooftop solar panels will reduce reliance on grid electricity. Enabling power-saving settings on computers, TVs, and other electronics is especially relevant in urban areas with high gadget usage,' he added.

Chittoor gears up for Yoga Day fete, 9 lakh likely to participate
The district administration is geared up for the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations scheduled at the Mesanical Grounds here on Saturday (June 21). Over 9 lakh people are expected to take part in the massive programme across 5,808 habitations in the district. Addressing the media here on Friday (June 20), District Collector Sumit Kumar stressed on the need for proper planning and prompt execution of the event. Lauding the officials, NGOs, and public groups for the State-led 'Yogandhra 2025' campaign, the Collector urged officials not to lose momentum and ensure that each venue has adequate facilities, with top priority to drinking water, snacks, toilets, and medical camps. Mr. Kumar instructed the officials to mobilise the yoga participants based on the capacity of each venue. He said that the public address systems, photo, and videography were mandatory, and the footage should be uploaded on the official app by 10 am of the same day. The Collector directed the special officers at the mandal level, municipal commissioners, and MPDOs, to participate and oversee arrangements. He said that the public representatives from village to district levels should be formally invited to give a fillip to the event. The programme will be held at the Mesanical Grounds from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. The Collector said that Yoga instructors will be posted at all the venues to guide the participants.

Kollumedu Government High School transforms into a Green School
From being a school without a compound and cattle lying around on the grounds, the Government High School Kollumedu in Tiruvallur district now has gotten a complete facelift. It is the district's first green school and now has a green fence, walls with heat-absorbent paint, solar-reflective coated roof, and is a zero carbon-footprint institution. The school also has herbal, vegetable and ornamental gardens, vermi-compost shed, rainwater harvesting system, and LED lighting. The works were carried out with funds from the Environment Department and district administration and CSR funds from Aptus Value Housing Finance India Limited. Sanitation First (India) was the implementation partner. District Collector M. Prathap said that three more schools in Tiruvallur had been identified to be upgraded as green schools and the administrative sanction for the same had been issued recently. Schools at Thirumazhisai, Thirukandalam and Kuthambakkam would be a part of this initiative. A total of ₹30 lakh would be allocated from government funds and the rest would be pooled from corporate social responsibility funds, he added. Tiruvallur district Green Fellow under the Department of Environment, Sruthi Saravanan, said, 'We had conducted several awareness programmes for the students and teachers as to how these systems can be maintained. We had ten topics and focused the students based on their age. We made teachers and students in charge of each concept. A gardener-cum-watchman has been appointed for the school.' Sanitation First (India) Chief Executive Padmapriya T.S. said that Green schools would definitely make better study environments for students and work environments for teachers. The aim of this project was also to inculcate the importance of environment protection and sustainable living. 'The children have been taught about the biodiversities of Tiruvallur district through wall paintings. This school is in the middle of an open space. The transformation is nothing short of remarkable. The government gave it a biofence, solar system, rainwater harvesting system, and the gardens too,' she said.

Nagashree students spread eco-awareness with band
Students of Nagashree English Medium School,Channarayapatna, conducted a special World Environment Day programme at Jain Kashi Shravanabelagola Sri Kshetra to raise awareness among tourists and the public. A girls' band set drew special attention as students in uniform marched through the main streets, performing and chanting environment-themed slogans. Principal Pavithra A.
