Language no longer a barrier to study in France: French envoy
KUWAIT: France is broadening access to its world-class universities and institutes for Kuwaiti students, with an increasing number of programs now available in English. Speaking to Kuwait Times on the sidelines of the France-Kuwait Alumni Gala 2025 - held Monday evening at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) - French ambassador to Kuwait, Olivier Gauvin, highlighted the growing inclusivity of France's academic institutions and its relevance for students from Kuwait and the wider region.
'France has some of the world's top universities and schools, in fields like business, engineering, and beyond,' he said. 'Kuwaiti students today can choose from a wide variety of programs that align with their interests and career goals.'
In recent years, a rising number of French institutions have introduced full English-language curriculums, making it easier for international students to begin their studies without prior knowledge of French. 'Language is no longer a barrier,' the ambassador emphasized. 'If you speak French, that's a plus. If not, you can start in English and naturally learn the language through daily life.' While English remains a global necessity, the ambassador underlined the advantages of learning French, especially in the professional sphere.
'Many international corporations operate in French-speaking countries,' he said. 'For them, being able to speak the language is a definite asset, it gives candidates a competitive edge.' Studying in France, he noted, also offers cultural enrichment, personal growth and long-term connections.
Building networks
France's cultural and linguistic presence continues to grow in Kuwait, with over 500,000 French speakers and 1,400 French teachers across public and private schools. Institutions like the French Institute in Kuwait and Campus France play a pivotal role in promoting French language, culture and academic guidance.
The France-Kuwait Alumni Gala brought together graduates of French institutions who are now living and working in Kuwait. The evening offered a chance to reconnect, build professional networks and reflect on the value of their educational journeys.
'It's a unique opportunity to bring all these people together,' the ambassador said. A key part of the event was a panel discussion featuring five alumni, each sharing their personal experiences studying in France, offering prospective students' practical insight into life in France, including motivations, challenges and the many advantages of pursuing higher education abroad.
As part of its continued support for the francophone academic community in Kuwait, the French Embassy is actively working to establish alumni associations. 'We're currently working on launching a network for La Sorbonne graduates in Kuwait,' said the ambassador. 'It will likely be one of the first of its kind here, and hopefully the start of many more.' Plans are also underway to create an association for graduates of Kuwait's French lycée.

Amthal Al-Huwailah and Khalifa Al-Ajeel said after a meeting to assess the situation and coordination between the two ministries that 'the strategic stock of essential and basic commodities is available in sufficient quantities and that coordination between the two ministries is ongoing to ensure its continuous availability'. The two sides called on citizens and residents not to stock foodstuff or hoard them at home to avoid the risk of spoilage or improper storage, adding there is nothing to worry about as commodities are available for all. The meeting was held within the framework of activating the national contingency plan and assessing field inspections and visits to cooperative societies to ensure their complete readiness amid an intensification in the fighting between neighboring Iran and the Zionist entity. The two ministers also called on local companies and factories to accord priority in supplies to cooperative societies because they are concerned with providing and distributing foodstuff and other commodities, adding that cooperative societies work around the clock to guarantee stability in the market and meet people's dmands. Since the outbreak of hostilities, almost all ministries and departments have been making necessary preparations to ensure that the country is not affected by the fallout of the war. Meanwhile, the supreme commission for citizenship announced on Thursday that it has recommended revoking the Kuwaiti citizenship of several people, but did not release the exact number. The commission however said the revocations were due to holding third-country citizenship, obtaining citizenship by fraud and for the sake of the country's interests. Kuwait has so far revoked the citizenship of over 37,000 Kuwaitis, most of them foreign women who were naturalized after getting married to Kuwaiti men. The commission's decision becomes effective after its approval by the Cabinet.

162,000 Kuwaitis visited UK in 2024, a 6 percent increase from 2023 KUWAIT: In collaboration with the British Embassy in Kuwait, Britain's national tourism agency, VisitBritain, organized a special afternoon tea event on Tuesday aimed at promoting the UK's diverse summer tourism experiences beyond London. During her opening remarks, British Ambassador to Kuwait Belinda Lewis emphasized the importance of strengthening the close ties between the United Kingdom and Kuwait, noting the growing interest among Kuwaiti travelers in exploring the UK's home nations. Ambassador Lewis added that Kuwaitis made 162,000 visits to the UK in 2024, a 6 percent increase from 2023 — with an average spend of £2,641 per person. The Gulf region ranks as the UK's tenth-largest inbound market, and Kuwait is projected to have the third-highest visitor spend among GCC countries in 2025. The ambassador highlighted the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme as a major driver of this growth, explaining that Kuwaitis made 148,854 applications between February 2024 and March 2025 - the second highest in the Gulf after Saudi Arabia. KU's Gulf Studies Center hosts lecture on Kuwait's global image
KUWAIT: The Center for Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Studies at Kuwait University hosted a lecture titled 'Kuwait in Foreign Eyes' on Thursday, delivered by Croatian Ambassador to Kuwait Emir Muharemi. The event was held in conjunction with the country's 64th Independence Day celebrations and was moderated by Dr Ghanem Al-Najjar, Professor of State Relations at KU. Speaking to KUNA following the event, Head of the Center Dr Yaqoub Al-Kandari said the lecture featured the presentation of Ambassador Muharemi's newly released book titled Kuwait: Sand, Pearls, and Oil – An Introduction to History, Politics, and Foreign Relations, which he authored and translated into English. Notably, it is the first foreign-authored publication to be issued by the center. Dr Yaqoub Al-Kandari Ambassador of Croatia, Amir Muharemi Al-Kandari emphasized that the center's role extends beyond academic discourse to fostering cultural understanding and showcasing Kuwait's historical and geopolitical significance through diverse perspectives. 'These activities are integral to our mission, especially as we mark a cherished national occasion,' he noted, stressing the importance of promoting cultural exchange and enhancing Kuwait's presence across scientific, diplomatic and cultural arenas. In remarks to KUNA, Ambassador Muharemi said the lecture aimed to offer foreign diplomats and business professionals a concise overview of Kuwait's political landscape, foreign policy, and international standing. He noted that the book explores key milestones in Kuwait's modern history, including its independence, the adoption of the constitution, and the establishment of the country's parliamentary democracy. The ambassador also delved into Kuwait's historical ties with the Ottoman Empire and Britain, the founding of the Mubarak Al-Sabah dynasty, and the delineation of Kuwait's modern borders. Expressing his gratitude, Muharemi thanked the Center for hosting the event and supporting the English translation of his work.
