Sammy Sosa returns to Wrigley Field for first official appearance with Cubs since 2004

CHICAGO — Sammy Sosa's long-awaited return to Wrigley Field is finally happening. An iconic yet reclusive figure around the Chicago Cubs, Sosa is expected to be part of the festivities surrounding Friday's game against the Seattle Mariners at the Friendly Confines. On Friday morning, the club posted a video of Sosa hugging Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, a moment that marked the evolution of their complicated relationship. Sammy's home. — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) June 20, 2025 The Cubs invited Sosa back to their annual fan convention last winter after he released an open letter apologizing for 'mistakes' he made in the past. The Cubs, in turn, announced that Sosa would be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame this year. Sosa subsequently made an appearance as a guest instructor during spring training in Arizona. Advertisement This continues the thaw in the cold war between Sosa and the organization. During the 2018 Cubs Convention, Ricketts referenced baseball's 'Steroid Era' and his belief that 'players from that era owe us a little bit of honesty.' Per a 2009 New York Times report, Sosa was among the players who tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug during what was designed to be an anonymous process in 2003. At a 2005 Congressional hearing, an attorney read a sworn statement on Sosa's behalf that said: 'To be clear, I have never taken illegal performance-enhancing drugs.' Until this past offseason, Sosa, 56, had been largely estranged from the Cubs, a franchise that has almost completely turned over since his last game on the North Side in 2004. Given Sosa's enormous role in building the Wrigley Field machine, the cheers on Friday are expected to be thunderous. This story will be updated later. The Texas Rangers Are Approaching An Inflection Point

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Kumar Rocker throws during the first inning of a baseball game ... More against the Chicago White Sox, Sunday, June 15, 2025, in Arlington, Texas. (AP Photo/LM Otero) What kind of team are the Texas Rangers? Almost halfway through the season, we still don't have an answer. At 36-39, they could still finish anywhere from first to last in the American League West, and no outcome would be too surprising. The club is approaching an inflection point in the 2025 season, not just because they need to go on a run if they want to contend for the playoffs, but because the front office has decide whether they'll be buyers or sellers before the trade deadline. The Rangers have a lot of key players who have been disappointing, inconsistent, or unhealthy for much of the year. They could either stabilize and right the ship, or flatline and sink the season. Rangers Hitters Their best hitters haven't been veterans Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, or Joc Pederson. Seager hasn't found his power stroke, posting a .387 slugging percentage that is 120 points below his career average. He also missed about a month's worth of games with two separate injuries in April and May. His .714 OPS is a little bit higher than the MLB average, but it's the lowest mark of his 11-year career by far. Semien and Pederson have been negatives at the plate. The former is hitting .226/.306/.337 with an 88 OPS+, indicating his offense has been 12% below average, and the latter was hitting .131/.269/.238 before going on the injured list with a fractured hand on May 24. Their best hitter has been the less-heralded Josh Smith, who leads the club with a 132 OPS+ and has started games at every position except catcher and pitcher this year. He was Seager's replacement at shortstop when he was hurt, but he has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury. Wyatt Langford has emerged as a solid hitter with a 118 OPS+, but his former top prospect counterpart Evan Carter has continued to befuddle the organization. He has bounced between the major and minor leagues and dealt with minor ailments, so he has only 80 plate appearances for the Rangers this year, but he's hitting a healthy .254/.338/.465. However, 10 of his 18 hits came over a four-game stretch from June 8 to June 12 in which he went 10-16. Outside of those games, he's only 8-55. Rangers Pitchers Two of the Rangers' best starting pitchers are out of action for the time being. Nathan Eovaldi's 1.56 ERA through 12 starts would be the best in MLB if he had enough innings to qualify, but he's on the shelf with triceps inflammation. He's joined on the IL by Tayler Mahle, who has a sore shoulder and owns a 2.34 ERA despite a low 18.2% strikeout rate. Two older hurlers have been better than expected for Texas. Jacob deGrom hasn't thrown more than 92 innings in a season since 2019, but the 37-year-old has a 2.19 ERA, a 0.91 WHIP, and hasn't missed a start. Patrick Corbin had ERAs ranging from 5.20 to 6.31 over this last four years with the Washington Nationals, but it's down to 3.91 this season. No one knows what to make of their two highly-regarded young arms. Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker were teammates at Vanderbilt who were both drafted in the top ten overall. Leiter has been reliable, if unexceptional. He's maintaining a 4.40 ERA and a 4.91 FIP. His 97.7 mph fastball isn't blowing hitters away, and he's fanning only 18.9% of them. Rocker was a disaster through his first six starts, posting an 8.87 ERA and getting demoted twice, but he threw five shutout innings in his most recent outing. Right now, the Rangers don't have a fifth starter in their rotation. They'll have to make a decision about what to do in the next few days, which serves as a metaphor for their entire season. They need their pitching to get and stay healthy, their big bats to produce more offense, and their youngsters like Carter and Rocker to do more than tantalize their potential.

Who's The Real Bryson Stott And Could The Phillies End Up Trading Him?

The Bryson-Stott-leadoff-hitter experiment appears to be dunzo. And it's a bit of a surprise considering how it began. When the Phillies slotted Stott into the leadoff spot on April 11, it looked like they found their guy to bump previous leadoff hitter Kyle Schwarber to cleanup to protect Bryce Harper. From his first day leading off to April 30, Stott batted .306 with an .832 OPS. But then Stott slipped into a protracted slump, batting .197 since May 1 with an unsightly .284 slug over that span. And by June 9, Stott's leadoff role ended indefinitely. Over the past 10 games, he's batted near the bottom of the order, mostly in the No. 7 spot. Philadelphia Phillies' Bryson Stott has struggled at the plate this season. (AP Photo/Matt Slocum) Beyond the whole leadoff thing, the Phillies must reassess what they got in Stott, who looked like a bedrock piece after batting .280 with 15 home runs and 31 stolen bases in his first full MLB year in 2023. It was believed that an elbow injury hindered his 2024 season. He said his elbow felt great this spring but the results have been the same, if not worse. He has slashed .244/.313/.352 over 854 plate appearances while playing Gold-Glove-caliber second-base. So will the real Bryson Stott please step forward? Is he the dynamic 2023 guy? Or the inconsistent slap-hitter over the past 800-plus plate appearances? Yeah, probably the latter, considering the sample size. Now, let's pose the difficult question — difficult because Stott is so popular in Philly: Could the Phils include him in a trade-deadline deal to obtain a big bopper or lights-out closer? Stott is a commodity that could lure a buyer who wants to dump salary and/or get younger. At 27 years, Stott is still young enough that a team could invest in his future potential but here's what really makes him enticing: He's a low-cost option (making $3.2 million this season before arbitration) and remains under team control until after the 2027 season. It's a scenario — to dangle Stott as trade bait — that Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski could/should consider, if he hasn't already. Hypothetically, let's say Philadelphia trades Stott as part of a deal to get their impact bat — centerfielder Byron Buxton, anybody? — then who would play second? Maybe rookie Otto Kemp, whose bat looks capable and has played 72 games at second in the minors, but he also has looked a little awkward in the field. Or maybe the team gives super-sub Edmundo Sosa a full-time gig but, in reality, Sosa's greatest value lies in his versatility. Inquirer baseball scribe David Murphy makes a great point that shipping out Stott for a more dangerous hitter may not be worth 'sacrificing his defense and shaking up the clubhouse to that degree.' However, the pressure is on Dombrowski to find the magical ingredient that gets this team back to the World Series for one more shot at a title, so it wouldn't be inconceivable if Dombrowski were to do something drastic and move Stott before the deadline. And if he leaves, Philly fans will never forget this incredible moment that he gave them:
