Source: Reds' Chase Burns, last year's No. 2 pick, will debut Tuesday vs. Yankees
Chase Burns, a top pitching prospect and last year's second pick in the MLB draft, will make his big-league debut for the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night against the New York Yankees at Great American Ball Park, a team source told The Athletic. Burns, 22, began the year at High-A Dayton and was promoted after three starts. He made eight starts in Double A before getting promoted to Triple A for two starts. Advertisement Overall, Burns is 7-3 with a 1.77 ERA in 13 minor-league starts. Perhaps more impressively, Burns has 89 strikeouts over 66 innings with just 13 walks. Four of those walks came in his first start in Triple A. After starting his career at the University of Tennessee, Burns transferred to Wake Forest, where he went 10-1 with a 2.70 ERA. Burns credited Wake Forest's pitching lab for much of his development. Burns has a fastball that's reached 100 mph, as well as a slider, curveball and an emerging changeup. The Reds put left-hander Wade Miley on the injured list on Friday, the day before he was scheduled to make his third start in place of Hunter Greene, who is on the IL. The Reds had a bullpen game on Saturday, losing 6-5 to the St. Louis Cardinals in 11 innings. The Reds called up right-hander Chase Petty — their third-ranked pitching prospect after Burns and Rhett Lowder — on Saturday. Petty pitched the 11th and suffered the loss. The hole will now be filled by Burns, who is considered one of the top pitching prospects in the minor leagues. Like the right-hander Lowder, the Reds' first-round pick out of Wake Forest in 2023, the Reds didn't have Burns pitch after drafting him in August. And also like Lowder, that won't stop him from making his big-league debut the year after he was drafted.

MLB Rumors: Insider disclosed Boston Red Sox approach to trade deadline, plan to improve roster
The Boston Red Sox have fallen short of expectations this season, entering MLB games today below the .500 mark and 8.5 games in back in the American League East. However, amid a recent turnaround, it appears Boston has no intention of operating as sellers at the MLB trade deadline. Jim Bowden of The Athletic reports that most around the league expect Boston to try and make trades to improve their roster this summer. Specifically, there's a belief that Boston will attempt to trade one of its outfielders for a starting pitcher and aim to upgrade at first base. Advertisement Related: MLB insider sheds light on Red Sox manager Alex Cora's job security Boston Red Sox rotation stats (FanGraphs): 4.42 ERA (24th), 1.38 WHIP (24th), .266 batting average allowed (28th) in 372.1 innings pitched The obvious trade candidate for Boston would be All-Star outfielder Jarren Duran, who has already popped up in MLB trade rumors this season. With Roman Anthony called up, it gives Boston more flexibility with its outfield to flip Duran for a starting pitcher. If Duran or Ceddanne Rafaela were to be moved, Boston would certainly be seeking a front-line starter with multiple years of contract control. It could be an enticing opportunity for clubs like the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks, teams that aren't rebuilding but want to compete next season. Related: Latest on Boston Red Sox willingness to trade Jarren Duran Boston Red Sox first baseman (FanGraphs): .737 OPS (15th), .266 batting average (10th), -0.2 fWAR (21st) in 71 games Advertisement Boston would've liked to address its issues at first base with Rafael Devers, but the All-Star slugger has made it clear he won't move off being the designated hitter. Given the depth of the Red Sox farm system, they should be well-positioned to find a quality first baseman among selling teams this summer. Cardinals broadcaster Chip Caray reportedly won't be punished for accidentally saying anti-gay slur on air: 'Honest' mistake
Chip Caray has worked in MLB broadcasting since the 1990s. (Photo by) St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Chip Caray will not be disciplined after accidentally saying an anti-gay slur on air, according to Front Office Sports. The offending term came in the top of the fourth inning against the Cincinnati Reds, with Caray reading a promo for the Cardinals' Disability Pride Night. Caray appeared to immediately realize what he had done, as more than 30 seconds of silence followed while Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray pitched to Spencer Steer. Caray eventually began speaking again as if nothing had happened. Advertisement FanDuel Sports Network Midwest reportedly declined comment to FOS, but the outlet reports the network considers the situation to be an "honest" mistake by the announcer. Caray, the son of broadcaster Skip Caray and grandson of Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray, is in his third season as the Cardinals' play-by-play man and has regularly worked in MLB broadcasting since the 1990s, most notably for his father's old Atlanta Braves team and his grandfather's old Chicago Cubs team. While under different circumstances, there have been two incidents similar to Caray's flub of the past five years. Cincinnati Reds announcer Thom Brennaman, another son of a longtime broadcaster, entered sports infamy in 2020 when he was caught on a hot mic using an anti-gay slur regarding San Francisco. He profusely apologized in the second game of the doubleheader, becoming a meme in the process, before getting yanked off air. Advertisement The Reds suspended Brennaman after the game and he eventually resigned, after apologizing again. Brennaman spent the next four years as something of a broadcasting pariah before joining the CW as a college football announcer last year. In 2023, Oakland Athletics broadcaster Glen Kuiper appeared to flub the name of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in the worst possible way. Like Brennaman, Kuiper apologized on-air and was later suspended indefinitely. The A's fired Kuiper two weeks later after an internal review reportedly uncovered additional information, which played a factor in his termination. In his own statement, Kuiper said he "will always have a hard time understanding how one mistake in a 20-year broadcasting career is cause for termination." He has not worked as a broadcaster since then.
