IGP donates Papagomo court award to police welfare fund
KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has donated RM5,000 to the Tabung Amanah Warisan Polis (TAWP), using funds awarded by the court in his committal proceedings against blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris, better known as Papagomo.
In a statement, the police said a mock cheque for the amount was presented to Bukit Aman management director Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid, who is also a permanent member of TAWP, in a brief ceremony at the IGP's office here today.
This is Razarudin's second contribution to TAWP, following a RM10,000 donation made on Feb 24, bringing his total personal contribution to RM15,000.
"This contribution reflects my support for TAWP's welfare initiatives to assist police officers, personnel and their children in need.
"Funds like this are essential in easing the financial burden of those in need, especially within the police community," Razarudin said in the statement.
On April 30, Papagomo issued an unconditional apology to Razarudin over defamatory statements made earlier this year.
Judicial Commissioner Gan Techiong, in delivering the ruling, said the apology read out in court must also be published on YouTube, TikTok, X, and Telegram for at least seven days. The court also ordered Papagomo to pay RM5,000 in costs.
In February, the court granted Razarudin permission to initiate committal proceedings against Papagomo for allegedly breaching a court injunction dated Jan 10.
The injunction prohibited Papagomo or his representatives from publishing or disseminating any defamatory statements against Razarudin on social media, whether in his official capacity as IGP or his personal capacity. This included statements made in writing, orally, through videos, or via online platforms and messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
The court was originally scheduled to hear contempt of court proceedings initiated by Razarudin against the blogger, but both parties were advised to seek a resolution, which led to Wan Muhammad Azri's apology and subsequent purging of the contempt.
On Dec 26 last year, Razarudin filed a RM3 million lawsuit against Papagomo for alleged defamation, which also involved the name of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. – BERNAMA

New 'Edisi Siasat 2.0' Telegram channel blocked
KUALA LUMPUR: The Telegram channel 'Edisi Siasat 2.0', created after the "Edisi Siasat" and "Edisi Khas" channels were blocked on Thursday, is now also inaccessible to users. A Bernama check of the channel found a warning displayed, saying: "This channel can't be displayed because it violated local laws (Malaysia)". All content on the channel had also been deleted. Retiree's RM535k gone in Facebook 'investment' scam
JOHOR BARU: – A private sector retiree lost RM535,766 after allegedly falling victim to an online investment scam promoted via a Facebook advertisement. Seri Alam police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said police received a report from a 57-year-old local man on Tuesday, who claimed losses exceeding RM500,000. He said the victim had come across a share investment advertisement on Facebook on March 13 that promised lucrative returns within a short time, and clicked on the provided link out of interest. "Subsequently, the victim made 26 payment transactions into five different bank accounts between March 13 and June 5, totalling RM535,766. The victim was also asked to make additional payments to withdraw the so-called 'investment profits', but those requests were never fulfilled," he said in a statement yesterday. Mohd Sohaimi said the victim only realised he had been duped after repeated attempts to recover the investment funds proved futile. "Preliminary checks via the CCID's 'Semak Mule' platform found that all five accounts involved had a total of 22 police reports linked to investment scams," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and police are also looking into the possible involvement of mule account holders.

Armed men on motorbikes kill 34 Niger soldiers, ministry says
NIAMEY (Reuters) -Several hundred armed men, many on motorbikes, attacked a Niger army base near the border with Mali, leaving at least 34 soldiers dead and 14 wounded, the Defence Ministry said. The attackers - described as "mercenaries" by the ministry - used eight vehicles and more than 200 motorbikes in the raid on the base in Bani-bangou on Thursday, according to the statement read out on state TV. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack on the army base in a statement on its Telegram channel on Friday. Niger, like other countries in West Africa's Sahel region, is battling Islamist militants linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State. Troops carried out aerial and ground search operations to secure the area after the attack, the ministry said without going into more detail on the assault.
