Marcos laments neglect of Philippine education sector
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. expressed dismay that the Philippine education sector has suffered from decades of neglect.
During an episode of the BBM Podcast on Wednesday, Marcos said there seems to have been no effort to address the problems in education. He said the country lacks at least 160,000 classrooms, adding that most classrooms need to be rehabilitated.
"Isipin mo 160,000 ang kulang natin na classroom? Paano nangyari 'yun? Basta pinabayaan na lang," Marcos said.
(Come to think of it, we lack 160,000 classrooms. How did that happen? Action was not taken to address it.)
"Mayroon ngang classroom kaming nakikita Marcos-type pa. Tinayo mga 1970. Eh dapat 'yung mga classroom na 'yun, 20 to 30 years lamang ang lifetime. Dapat ayusin na 'yan after. Pero hanggang ngayon ginagamit pa. Pinabayaan talaga ang education. That's what happened. There was no effort to help the education," he added.
(We even saw classrooms that are Marcos-type structures. They were built in the 1970s. Those buildings only have a lifetime of 20 to 30 years. They should be rehabilitated after that. However, they are still being used until now. The education sector was neglected. That's what happened. There was no effort to help the education.)

The President did not identify who were neglect with their duties.
Marcos has called for the need to rehabilitate some school buildings in the country, noting that these were built decades ago.
Meanwhile, Marcos said the failure to address education concerns is often reflected in the country's ratings.
"Kaya 'yung mga grade–, 'yung mga rating natin, especially STEM subjects, pababa nang pababa. Tapos may hindi marunong magbasa," Marcos said, referring to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Recently, the Senate and the House of Representatives jointly passed a concurrent resolution calling on Marcos to create a Cabinet Cluster for Education in order to address the country's education crisis, the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) said.
The EDCOM 2 said it passed the concurrent resolution on June 11, the last day of the 19th Congress, to resolve the prevailing issues of functional illiteracy, lack of access to quality early childhood education, the obvious mismatch between graduate skills and industry needs, and significant gaps in teacher development, as identified by the commission in its Year 1 and 2 reports. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

"Travel by Filipinos to both these countries is highly discouraged due to the ongoing crisis and the actual closure of their airspace and seaports." Those who wish to leave were advised by the DFA to contact the embassy to coordinate their repatriation. Security alert advisories, the DFA said, "will be subject to periodic review, taking into consideration the situation on the ground." Israel and Iran have traded missile strikes for a week, trapping civilians and foreign nationals on both sides of the conflict, triggering international alarm. House prosecution says impeachment court spox should not speak for VP Sara
Senate impeachment court spokesperson Regie Tongol should speak for the court, not for the camp of Vice President Sara Duterte, House prosecution panel spokesperson and lawyer Antonio Bucoy said Friday. Bucoy was reacting to Tongol's comments on Thursday when he said that there is a high chance that the Vice President will make a motion to dismiss the impeachment complaint. Tongol said, 'Ang action na ini-expect natin from the defense by filing an ad cautelam appearance—na magpa-file sila ng either answer with affirmative defense questioning the jurisdiction, or a motion to dismiss the case for lack of jurisdiction.' (We expect the defense to question the jurisdiction of file a motion to dismiss the case for lack of jurisdiction.) 'As spokesperson, he is the mouthpiece of the court. He expresses the mindset of the court. [But] he's telegraphing the defense to file a motion to dismiss,' Bucoy told GMA News Online in a text message. 'Recall that the partiality of some members of the court had already been raised as an issue. I priorly stated that while I am prepared to give the judges the benefit of a doubt, the spokesperson's subject statement convinces me otherwise,' Bucoy added. House spokesperson Princess Abante agreed. 'Do not speak for the defense. Speak for the impeachment court,' Abante said of Tongol. 'That is why we are saying that what we want is a Senate impeachment court that is ready to accept the evidence, listen to the evidence and decide based on the evidence presented,' Abante added. Libanan then cited the Constitution's demand for neutrality from judges in any legal or quasi-legal proceeding. AFP 'stands ready' for possible repatriation of Pinoys in Iran, Israel

REUTERS/ Moshe Mizrahi The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) assured Friday it is prepared to assist in the possible repatriation of Filipinos in Iran and Israel amid the escalating conflict between the two countries. According to AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla, the Philippine military is closely monitoring the developments in the Middle East, particularly the Iran-Israel conflict. "At this time, our priority is to support the Philippine government's efforts to ensure the safety and possible repatriation of Filipinos in affected areas," said Padilla. "Should the need arise, the AFP stands ready to assist as directed. We will be guided by the decisions and policies of higher civilian authorities in all actions related to this evolving situation," she said. Israel bombed multiple targets in Iran last Friday, calling it a "preemptive strike" to stop the Islamic republic from developing a nuclear weapon. Iran, which maintains that its nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes, is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, while Israel is not. The exchange of missile attacks between the two countries have already dragged on for seven days. The DFA earlier said 26 Filipinos may be repatriated from Israel this weekend via border crossing into Jordan since flight operations are currently suspended. PH Air Force assets ready Meanwhile, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) also expressed readiness to deploy aircraft and personnel for repatriation efforts. "PAF anticipates and prepares for any eventuality that our assets may be utilized for evacuation," said PAF spokesperson Colonel Ma. Consuelo Castillo. "Normally, we use our C-130s for that purpose," she added. The Philippine government has said it is considering to raise alert levels for Israel and Iran. Israel is currently at Alert Level 2 or restriction, which is issued if there are real threats to the life, security, and property of Filipinos arising from internal disturbance, instability, or external threat. On the other hand, Iran is under Alert Level 1 or precautionary, which is issued when there are valid signs of internal disturbance, instability, and/or external threat to the host country. According to Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, Alert Level 3 or voluntary has yet to be declared but the Philippine government is already active as if both countries are under this status. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
