'Drug trafficker' from Brazil nabbed at OR Tambo

TimesLIVE23-05-2025

A 39-year-old suspected drug trafficker was arrested on arrival from São Paulo, Brazil at the OR Tambo International Airport on Friday morning.
Police said the Brazilian landed at 9am from São Paulo and was in transit to Benin when he was intercepted by police officers at the airport.
'He was pulled aside and during a body search cocaine worth R1.4m was found wrapped around his legs,' police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said.
The man was arrested and is expected to appear before the Kempton Park magistrate's court soon on a charge of drug trafficking.
Mathe said the police were intensifying their efforts to clamp down on the illicit trade of drugs.
She said between January and March, 23,306 suspects had been arrested nationally for being in possession of drugs. These included drug traffickers who continued to be apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport.
'Most of these drug traffickers are coming into the country from Brazil and are found to have swallowed these drugs. Through targeted intelligence operations, we have been able to intercept more than 20 drug traffickers in the last six months at this port of entry.'
Mathe said 3,471 suspects had been arrested for dealing in drugs.
These included six Mozambicans and three South Africans who were arrested in Standerton, Mpumalanga, after police dismantled a clandestine drug laboratory in that area.
Drugs, high performance vehicles and machinery valued at R27m were confiscated in this operation including R3m in cash that was found in the boot of a Mercedes-Benz.
During this same period, a clandestine drug laboratory was also shut down in Westonaria in Gauteng.

ActionSA calls for NPA head Shamila Batohi to be suspended

JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA is calling for the suspension of National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) head Shamila Batohi, saying the organisation has failed to successfully prosecute some high-profile cases. The party was picketing outside the Justice Department in Pretoria on Thursday, to hand over a memorandum of demands which includes that Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi begin the process of removing Batohi. The party has criticised the NPA for its handling of recent matters including the rape case of Nigerian pastor Timothy Omotoso, and the corruption involving Moroadi Cholota and former African National Congress (ANC) member of Parliament Zizi Kodwa. ActionSA supporters gathered outside the Justice Department offices to hear party leader Herman Mashaba express his dissatisfaction with the performance of the NPA. Kubayi was, however, not available to receive the party's memorandum. Mashaba said Batohi's incompetence can't be justified. "It's an excuse, it's nonsense it's unacceptable, she must not really treat us as South Africans who are fools." The party has given the department seven days to respond. ACTIONSA CALLS ON CITIZENS TO BOLSTER ITS CALL ActionSA has also urged members of the public to support the call for the removal of term began in 2018 at the peak of the state capture commission of inquiry, with the promise of prosecuting high-profile corruption six years on, there's been little movement in that direction, with Batohi citing a lack of resources for Mashaba says this is an excuse that South Africans should reject."We know it's only going to be through pressure by all South Africans to hold them accountable because the ANC [African National Congress] of Cyril Ramaphosa is determined to break down the rule of law in our country." While Kubayi was not present to receive the memorandum, a representative met the marchers on her behalf.

SA engineers detained in Equatorial Guinea back home

The families of Frik Potgieter and Peter Huxham have confirmed that the two South African engineers, who had been unlawfully detained in Equatorial Guinea since 9 February 2023, have been released and are safely home on South African soil. A family statement mentioned that their release follows a pardon from the President of Equatorial Guinea – for which the families are extremely grateful. This brings an end to a harrowing ordeal of anguish, uncertainty, and unwavering efforts by many to secure their freedom. When South Africans connect, we don't just network; we build a community. The Lekker Network is a professional network where every conversation starts with, 'How can I help you?' Come join us & be a part of a community of extraordinary Saffas. In July 2024, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found that their imprisonment was arbitrary, unlawful, and in breach of multiple international human rights obligations. The UN also, at the time, called for their immediate release. 'We are overwhelmed with relief and joy. The last two years and four months have been unimaginably painful for both of our families. Today, we are finally able to say: Frik and Peter are safely back home,' said family spokespersons Shaun Murphy and Francois Nigrini. The families expressed their deepest appreciation to everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, including Potgieter and Huxham's employer (SBM Offshore), the South African and UK governments, international diplomatic partners, parliamentarians, legal teams, Hostage International and other civil society organisations, and the media. They are also grateful to former Minister of International Relations, Naledi Pandor, and the current Minister, Ronald Lamola, who visited Equatorial Guinea as envoys for the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa. They also thanked the tens of thousands of individuals worldwide who signed petitions, supported media advocacy, offered emotional support and prayed for their safe return. 'Their return home is the result of collective efforts over many, many months, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who played a role in securing their freedom. 'This has been a long and difficult journey. We want to thank every person who stood with us; your support carried us through our darkest moments. We now respectfully ask for privacy and space as Frik, Peter and their families begin the journey of healing,' the families said. Police have shot and killed a Mozambican man wanted in connection with multiple kidnappings. Mauro Mucambe Junior had an outstanding warrant of arrest which had been issued by Maputo police back in August 2024. Police's anti-kidnapping unit were tracing a kidnapped Pakistani businessman when they encountered the wanted 40-year-old at a residential complex in Fourways earlier this week. Police kill suspect The operation began in Midrand where officers seized a Mercedes-Benz and an SUV while securing the arrest of two kidnapping suspects. 'They proceeded to Fourways where the task team announced their arrival and a shoot-out ensued,' confirmed national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. Following the incident, police identified the deceased suspect as a Mozambican kingpin wanted in connection with several kidnappings 'One unlicensed firearm used by the fatally wounded fugitive of justice was seized, including 10 rounds of ammunition. Four cellphones and four bank cards have also been seized,' confirmed Mathe. The kidnapped Pretoria businessman is still being held by his captors and a ransom demand was made made to his family. 'Police have full faith and confidence in the work of the anti-kidnapping task team to rescue the kidnapped businessman,' stated Mathe. Increase in kidnappings Kidnappings have surged in South Africa, with police making over 170 ransom-related arrests since January last year. 'More than R1.2 million has been recovered. More than 100 victims rescued mainly in Gauteng and more than 40 vehicles used in kidnapping crimes were also seized by the team,' police confirmed. Earlier this week, a female kidnapping victim was saved by passing Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers along the N1. The victim screamed for help from a moving car prompting a high speed chase that ended a few kilometers from the Gordon Road offramp. 'The officers rescued the woman, who confirmed she had been kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend from her workplace in Midrand, where she was on night shift,' confirmed JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla.
