Trump wins House approval to take back foreign aid, NPR, PBS funding

The vote is a win for Trump and his billionaire former advisor, Elon Musk, and the Department of Government Efficiency project that all but eliminated the U.S. Agency for International Development. Billions of dollars of the targeted funds flowed through the now-defunct agency.

It also reflects ongoing tensions within the Republican party over spending and Congress' control over government spending.
Many GOP lawmakers were eager to push the request through, but moderate members of the party raised concerns with the impact of cuts.
A primary concern was the $1.1 billion in cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds NPR and PBS.
Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nevada, penned a joint statement with Rep. Dan Goldman, D-New York, chairs of the Public Broadcasting Caucus, defending "the valuable role public media plays across our districts, particularly in rural areas where, in many cases, it is the only available and reliable media service available."
"Rural broadcasters face significant challenges in raising private funds, making them particularly vulnerable if government funding is cut," they wrote.
Others have said they're concerned about cuts to the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program started under former President George W. Bush. In total, the package would pull back $8.3 billion in foreign aid.
Several Republicans have also raised concerns privately that the package oversteps the balance of power between Congress and the executive branch, because the request targets funds previously approved by lawmakers and because the proposal itself, in some cases, leaves out details on specifically what would change.
However, House leadership praised the effort as an easy way to deliver on promises to cut federal spending.
"We all ran on the government has a spending problem," GOP conference chair Lisa McClain, R-Michigan, told USA TODAY on June 9. "We're talking about $9.4 billion. This is a no-brainer."

Earlier Friday, the Pakistani government said it plans to nominate Trump for the prize, citing his 'decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis.' Last month, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire, a deal in which Trump claims he played a significant role. But Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi disagrees. Modi 'clearly conveyed' to Trump that he did not play a role in the ceasefire during a recent phone call, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Tuesday. Instead, Modi says the ceasefire was achieved through direct talks with Pakistan. Trump has appeared frustrated that his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, received the award in 2009, less than a year into his first term. Donald Trump continued his recent feud with Fox News, saying liberal commentator Jessica Tarlov's appearances are what 'make MAGA absolutely hate' the network. Trump posted to Truth Social Friday: 'Why does Fox News allow failed TV personality Jessica Tarlov to 'soil' The Five? Her voice, her manner, and above all else, what she says, are a disgrace to television broadcasting.' The president appears to be reacting to Tarlov - the most consistent Trump-hating voice on the show and network - discussing negative polling numbers on Friday's show. 'I've had the best poll numbers that I've ever had, and she is constantly saying the exact opposite. The just out highly respected Rasmussen Poll is at 56%, Insider Advantage 54%, and many others are at 56% to 68%! Sadly, the audience has to listen to her spew off that I am doing poorly in the polls, while I am beating the democrats by 15%+ points and, more importantly, I just won an election against two candidates, Sleepy Joe and Kamala, in a Landslide by winning all 7 Swing States, and the Popular Vote by millions, with records broken everywhere!' Still, he took offense at how he was being rated on the border. 'Now a FoxNews poll comes out this morning giving me a little more than 50% at the Border, and yet the Border is miraculously perfect, NOBODY WAS ABLE TO COME IN LAST MONTH,' he wrote. The outburst came Thursday morning as the world continued to wait and see whether the United States would join Israel in its current bombing campaign against Iran. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday night that Trump had signed off on an attack plan for Iran but the president had yet to issue a final order. Overnight Thursday the U.S. did not get involved in the week-long war between Israel and Iran. 'The Wall Street Journal has No Idea what my thoughts are concerning Iran!' also wrote on Truth Social Thursday morning. The president also slammed Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell - who he appointed - after the Fed decided Wednesday not to push interest rates down as Trump has demanded. '"Too Late" Jerome Powell is costing our Country Hundreds of Billions of Dollars. He is truly one of the dumbest, and most destructive, people in Government, and the Fed Board is complicit,' Trump wrote. 'Europe has had 10 cuts, we have had none,' he continued. 'We should be 2.5 Points lower, and save $BILLIONS on all of Biden's Short Term Debt.' 'We have LOW inflation! TOO LATE's an American Disgrace!' Trump wrote.

Voice of America parent terminates over 600 more staff in likely death knell

The parent agency of Voice of America said on Friday it had issued termination notices to over 639 more staff, completing an 85% decrease in personnel since March and effectively spelling the end of a broadcasting network founded to counter Nazi propaganda. Kari Lake, senior adviser to the U.S. Agency for Global Media, said the staff reduction meant 1,400 positions had been eliminated as part of U.S. President Donald Trump's agenda to cut staffing at the agency to a statutory minimum. 'Reduction in Force Termination Notices were sent to 639 employees at USAGM and Voice of America, part of a long-overdue effort to dismantle a bloated, unaccountable bureaucracy,' Lake said in a statement. She said the agency had been 'riddled with dysfunction, bias, and waste.' Lake said the move meant USAGM now operated near its statutory minimum of 81 employees. She said 250 employees would remain across USAGM, Voice of America, and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which transmits news into communist-run Cuba. She said none of OCB's 33 employees had been terminated. The move likely marks an end to VOA, which was founded in 1942 to counter Nazi propaganda, operated in nearly 50 languages and reached 360 million people a week, many living under authoritarian regimes. In May, nearly 600 VOA contractors were dismissed. Some Republicans have accused VOA and other publicly funded media outlets of being biased against conservatives, and called for them to be shuttered as part of wider efforts to shrink the government. Another USAGM station, Radio Free Asia, which has already been reduced to skeleton staffing, said in a staff email on Friday that it was implementing additional furloughs in its human resources, ordinance, journalist security, and research, training & evaluation teams.
