Old-timer Safiq's stint ends with JDT as club look for fresh faces
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) stalwarts Safiq Rahim and Farizal Marlias have bid farewell to the club after years of dedication to the Southern Tigers.
The club announced the duo's departure via a tribute on their official Facebook page, recognising their years of commitment, leadership, and achievements that helped shape JDT into a dominant force in Malaysian and regional football.
Safiq, 37, joined JDT in 2013 and has been instrumental in the team's success, including captaining the side to the historic 2015 AFC Cup victory, the first time an East Asian club clinched the prestigious continental title.
Over the course of 270 appearances, the attacking midfielder netted 59 goals and provided 68 assists, helping the club secure an impressive list of honours - nine Malaysia Super League titles, seven Charity Shields, four Malaysia Cups, four FA Cups, and one AFC Cup.
Farizal, 38, who donned the JDT jersey in 2015, on the other hand, established himself as one of the country's finest goalkeepers, keeping 102 clean sheets in 222 appearances.
His tenure saw him win 10 league titles, nine Charity Shields, five Malaysia Cups, four FA Cups and the historic AFC Cup in 2015.
The Johor-born duo are widely regarded as legends, not only for their on-field success but also for their leadership and influence within the club.
On Monday, JDT confirmed the release of 11 players ahead of the 2025-2026 M-League season through a post on social media.
The others released were Izham Tarmizi, Ramadhan Saifullah and seven foreign players, Jordi Amat, Jese Rodriguez, Murilo Henrique, Jonathan Viera, Alvaro Gonzalez, Roque Mesa, and Anselmo de Moraes, as the club look to refresh its squad for the upcoming campaign. — Bernama

A1 League ready to step up
KUALA LUMPUR: Many feared that when the second-tier Premier League was scrapped three years ago, it would further erode Malaysian football development. That may not be the case. The signs so far are looking positive for the revamped domestic league structure. The 16-team A1 Semi Pro League for the 2025-2026 season will feature South Korea's FC Seoul Phoenix, Kedah FC, Johor Darul Ta'zim II, Selangor FC II, Kelantan WTS FC, Perak FA, Kedah FA and Kelantan Red Warriors. The Premier League was replaced by the A1 Semi-Pro League (which moved up from the third-tier) in 2022. Sports analyst Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli said while it is encouraging to see a healthy number of teams in the A1 Semi Pro League, strong enforcement and monitoring is needed. "The number of teams in the A1 Semi Pro League shows that it can be as exciting as the Super League, especially for the teams that failed to get a licence to play in the Super League," said Pekan. "If things go well in the A1 League, it can play a positive role in the Malaysian football structure in the absence of a second-tier competition after the cancellation of the Premier League. "Fans of the teams that are not playing in the Super League, can now support their teams in the A1 League and this can continue being a platform for the players as well." Pekan said although the A1 League is a semi-pro competition, proper monitoring is still needed to prevent issues of unpaid salaries. Last season, several teams were reportedly facing financial problems which resulted in poor performances in the A1 Semi-Pro League. "The AFL has its own licensing process which is less stringent compared to Super League licensing, so I believe it won't be too difficult for the teams," said Pekan. "Last season, we saw some teams starting well but ended up badly after facing financial issues. We cannot let this happen again this season, the monitoring of the team's finances must be strict and issues must be nipped in the bud."

The Malaysian went down 11-4, 12-10, 11-4, 11-0 to Hong Kong's world No. 29 Ho Tze Lok in the women's final today at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Kuching. The setback came as a surprise as the 29-year-old Rachel had not dropped a set in the tournament until the semi-finals on Friday where she beat compatriot Aifa Azman 11-9, 11-2, 8-11, 9-11, 12-10. Rachel, who finished runner-up in the 2021 edition in Pakistan, said the hot weather was a factor for her defeat, and Tze Lok played well. "A bit disappointed in the final today, I didn't really adapt to the court, it was really hot and I struggled. She played really well today, putting me under a lot of pressure," said Rachel. "I think I made too many errors, that was the main thing. Every time she put me under pressure, I sort of went for it, maybe I should have stayed calm. "I struggled with the weather, it was really hot... I couldn't end the rallies in the way I usually do," said Rachel whose next event will be the National Championship in Kuala Lumpur in August.
