Lack of commitment to education
EDITORIAL: In a glaring indication of the low priority our policymakers assign to education, the total expenditure by federal and provincial governments to the sector was a mere 0.8 percent of the GDP in FY2024-25, reveals the Economic Survey of Pakistan.
Instead of improving, the figure has been falling from year to year since 2018-19 when it was 2.0. To put this issue in perspective, the countries that are on course to sustainable development allocate much higher amounts to education. India, for instance, spends around 3.1 percent of its GDP on education, and Bangladesh 2 percent.
Compared to Pakistan many African countries also spend a lot more. And the UNESCO recommends that countries allocate 4 to 6 percent of their GDP. As per its Education 2030 Framework for Action, this is a key benchmark for assessing a government's commitment to education funding.
As a result of Pakistan's minuscule allocations to education — the building block of socioeconomic progress and prosperity — an estimated 22.8 million children are out-of-school, deprived of the opportunities to realise their full potential and contribute to society. The officially claimed literacy rate is 60.6 percent, which is misleading since it includes anyone barely able to write his/her own name.
Unfortunately, successive governments have neglected the constitutional provision that calls for free and compulsory education for all children five to 16 years of age. The situation is particularly dire in rural areas, where in many cases schools lack basic facilities, like toilets, drinking water and electricity, which act as a disincentive for young people, especially girls, to go to school.
Another overlooked but critical issue is curriculum. Due to a general retrogressive trend in society there is little room for reforming content of what is taught as well as new teaching methodologies that are reflective of the country's changing needs. In an age when technological advancements are transforming the job market our education system largely remains focused on rote learning rather than fostering creativity and problem-solving essential to generate innovative solutions to challenges.
Our policymakers need to realise that investing in education is not a luxury; it is a necessity and a human right that must be accessible to all, irrespective of who they are and where they are. Education must get the priority it deserves for Pakistan to realise the full potential of its population.
It is also a great equalizer. The governments at the centre and in the provinces must allocate a decent percentage of the GDP to this sector so young people acquire knowledge and skills needed for human development, and necessary to increase productivity and economic growth.

Ahsan visits under-construction National Police Hospital, Islamabad
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal paid a visit to the under-construction National Police Hospital located in Sector H-11, Islamabad and directed the concerned authorities to ensure the timely completion of the project by June 2026. He was accompanied by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Inspector General of Islamabad Police, and Deputy Commissioner Islamabad. During the visit, the federal minister reviewed the construction progress and expressed satisfaction over the pace of work. He directed the concerned authorities to ensure the timely completion of the project by June 2026, emphasising that the hospital is a significant step towards the welfare and healthcare of police personnel. 'This project reflects the state's firm commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies. Our police force forms the frontline of internal security, and it is the state's responsibility to ensure their health and wellbeing,' he said. Sharing details of the project, the minister said the National Police Hospital will be a state-of-the-art facility with a capacity of 250 beds. It will provide services in general medicine, surgery, emergency care, and other specialized areas. Upon completion, it will directly benefit nearly 12,000 police personnel by offering them access to modern medical facilities. He noted that the project was approved in May 2023 and underscored the importance of its timely completion. 'These projects are funded by taxpayers' money and must be treated as a national trust. Any negligence in their delivery is unacceptable,' he said. Officials from the relevant ministries, engineers, and project stakeholders briefed the minister on the current status and progress of construction. Iqbal instructed all involved to maintain transparency, quality, and speed in implementation, adding that sustainable and timely completion of development projects is vital for the uplift of vulnerable segments of society and the strengthening of state institutions. PTI expresses strong solidarity with Iran
ISLAMABAD: The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday expressed strong solidarity with Iran, declaring that the people of Pakistan stand firmly with their Iranian brethren amid ongoing hostilities between Iran and Israel. A PTI delegation, led by the Opposition Leader in National Assembly Omar Ayub, comprising senior party leaders, visited the Iranian Embassy to convey support on behalf of the Pakistani nation. The delegation met with Iran's Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Reza Amiri Moghadam. The visit was undertaken on the instructions of PTI's incarcerated patron-in-chief and ex-prime minister Imran Khan. A message from Khan was formally delivered to the Iranian envoy during the meeting. During his meeting with the Iranian envoy, Ayub condemned the Israeli aggression, calling recent actions by Tel Aviv violations of international law. 'We stand firmly with the Iranian government and its people,' he said. 'From Gaza to Tehran, the cries of the oppressed are shaking the conscience of the world.' He urged the international community to recognise Iran's right to self-defence and called on the Muslim world to move beyond symbolic gestures and adopt practical steps. 'Israel has become a threat to global peace,' he added, reiterating PTI's support for Iran. The acting PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan who was also part of the delegation, said that 'we extended condolences over the recent losses in Iran and assured the ambassador that the people, opposition, and government of Pakistan stand united with Iran during this challenging time.' Separately, talking to journalists outside Parliament House, Khan reaffirmed that any efforts regarding Imran Khan's release would be pursued solely through constitutional and legal means. 'There will be no deal,' Khan asserted, dismissing speculation of backdoor negotiations. 'Imran Khan has always maintained that he will not seek or accept any deal.' He also emphasised that PTI had never sought assistance from any foreign government. 'We are not relying on the new US administration or any foreign intervention,' he said.
