As the industry continues to buzz over Deepika Padukone's alleged demand for an 8-hour workday on Spirit, the conversation around mental health and working conditions in Bollywood is finally gaining momentum. Joining the chorus of voices advocating for reform is actor Banita Sandhu, who in a recent interview with SCREEN delivered a heartfelt critique of the industry's exploitative practices—drawing from personal experiences that left her physically and emotionally exhausted.
Banita, best known for her poignant debut in Shoojit Sircar's October, revealed she once endured 16-18 hour shoot days while working on a Hindi film early in her career. What's more shocking is that, according to her, producers deliberately planned her schedule in a way that denied her rest. 'I would shoot the entire day and then be on a flight at night. I didn't sleep for 24 hours straight," she recalled. 'At the time, I didn't know any better. I thought this was just the way things worked."
But something didn't sit right with her. And unlike many young actors who choose to stay silent for fear of losing work, Banita took a stand—not just for herself, but for the entire crew. 'I stood up to the producers and told them that this is not okay. Maybe I'm blacklisted now, but I don't care," she said, unapologetically. 'I just believe in standing up for what's right."
The price for that integrity may have been steep, but Banita wears it like armour. 'It's basic human rights we're talking about. Everyone—whether you're an actor or a light boy—deserves rest, dignity, and care."
In the same breath, Banita highlighted the stark contrast she observed while working in international projects such as Eternal Beauty and Season 3 of Bridgerton. She praised the strong union culture in Hollywood that fiercely protects not just actors, but every member of the cast and crew. 'In the West, there are strict rules. We have 12-hour turnovers, mandatory rest periods, and proper contracts. It's not a free-for-all," she explained. 'I've always been a firm believer in those standards. We're not at war—we're making movies. Nothing, not even art, should cost people their health."
While she acknowledges that things in Bollywood are 'slowly getting better," Banita stresses that reform is still needed—especially to protect young talent who might be too afraid to speak out. 'If I had known what I know now, I would have spoken up even earlier. But in that moment, it felt like the only option was to grind through it."
Despite her past experience, Banita is not closing the door on Bollywood. In fact, she hopes to embrace more commercial films—on her own terms. 'I'd love to do a full-on Bollywood movie, with songs and dancing. That's what I grew up watching," she said, her eyes lighting up. 'People don't know, but I used to dance a lot as a kid. It would be a dream to have one of my own songs someday."
She's also returning to the Indian screen soon, playing a key role in Detective Sherdil, Zee5's upcoming murder mystery alongside Diljit Dosanjh, Boman Irani, Diana Penty, and Sumeet Vyas. While the film marks a return to home turf, Banita is doing it her way—with a firm resolve to not compromise on the principles that matter.

Although rumours have been rife that Minnal Murali director and Malayalam actor Basil Joseph would helm the project, with Bollywood star Ranveer Singh in the titular role, Mukesh Khanna has firmly denied the latter part time and again, stating that Ranveer 'doesn't have the correct face' for the character. Recently, another rumour surfaced suggesting that Telugu superstar Allu Arjun had replaced Ranveer Singh in the upcoming film reboot. Interestingly, Mukesh had once acknowledged that Arjun 'has it in him to be Shaktimaan'. While Arjun's fans were thrilled by the speculation, Basil Joseph has categorically denied the reports, reiterating that Ranveer Singh remains the only choice for the character. 'Shaktimaan will be made only with Ranveer Singh,' senior film journalist Subhash K Jha quoted Basil as saying. A source close to the project echoed this sentiment and told Jha, 'No one else is doing Shaktimaan. It is Ranveer Singh and no one else. Whoever is spreading rumours of his replacement clearly has their own agenda.' Now, it needs to be seen what Mukesh Khanna's response to this would be, particularly since he has repeatedly asserted that Ranveer Singh is not suited for the role. 'People know that Ranveer Singh came to convince me for allowing him to reprise the role of Shaktiman. I can't hide it also because later people said that I lauded Ranveer and called him a terrific actor. News of Ranveer being confirmed to play Shaktiman started coming but I hadn't agreed to it. I also have a conflict with Sony and I had put up a video clarifying that I haven't approved Ranveer to play the role and the reason is that…Ranveer sat in front of me that day for 3 hours but ultimately I had to tell him that what needs to be seen on his face wasn't there. He looks playful, like someone who would trick others,' he told Bollywood Thikana in September last year. However, his repeated comments sparked controversy, prompting Mukesh to clarify that he meant no disrespect towards Ranveer. At a press conference, when asked whether he made Ranveer wait at his office for hours, the Shaktimaan actor responded, 'No. I didn't force him to wait. He sat for three hours because he wanted to. He came to my office, we enjoyed each other's company. He's a terrific actor, he has terrific energy. But I decide who plays Shaktimaan. Producers cast actors, an actor can't cast a producer. You come to my office and say that you want to be Shaktimaan, it's not allowed!' Weighing in on the matter, filmmaker Siddharth P Malhotra—who helmed Junaid Khan's debut film Maharaj and directed Rani Mukerji's comeback film Hichki—stated that such requests are not new and have existed in the industry for years. 'We finished Hichki, the whole film, in 28 eight-hour shifts," Malhotra told IANS. 'Whether it was Rani (Mukerji), the kids, the cameramen or the spot boy, everyone finished in that time." Hichki, produced by Yash Raj Films, marked Rani Mukerji's return to the screen after the birth of her daughter Adira in December 2015. Recalling that emotional period, Rani had said, 'For 14 months, I have been there in front of her face. So I kept asking myself, 'Is it going to be worth it?'" She even confessed to 'howling in the car" on her first day back on set. Malhotra explained that every project comes with its own expectations and timelines, but the concept of eight-hour workdays isn't unprecedented. 'It's been happening for years. When I'd shot with Kajol in 2010, she used to do eight-hour shifts. She made it very clear she'd either come from 10 am to 6 pm, or 7 am to 2 pm, or for an eight-hour shift at night. Rani also did the same. Deepika isn't demanding anything new." Kajol recently supported the same practice in an interview with PTI, stating, 'I didn't work for 20 or 30 hours. I was always very clear that we would work a certain amount only, and my mom (veteran actor Tanuja) also backed me up big time on it." Addressing the controversy around Deepika's exit, Malhotra added, 'If I need an actor and am confident I can finish the film within those working hours, I'd work with them even for six hours a day. This isn't actor-specific. People are just gaining publicity in the name of Deepika Padukone. She's asking for family time, what wrong is she demanding?" He also remarked that if Vanga required longer hours from his female lead, the director could always adjust the schedule accordingly or cast someone else. 'If the director can't accommodate the timeline, they can simply choose to work with another actor," he said. Following Deepika's reported exit, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga has signed Animal breakout star Triptii Dimri as the lead opposite Prabhas in Spirit.
