4th edition of 'Listen and Talk' forum sheds light on Palestinian cause, combating extremism
CAIRO – 6 May 2025: Al-Azhar Observatory launched, Tuesday, the 4th edition of the 'Listen and Talk' forum, attended by a number of ministers and officials.
This year's edition focused on civil and volunteer work and its role in combating extremism, along with the youth's role in spreading awareness about the Palestinian cause in the age of digital media and combating the phenomenon of misinformation through enhancing community awareness.
Director of the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism, Reham Abdullah confirmed that the observatory was established in 2015 under the supervision of Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayeb, with the aim of protecting youth from extremism and terrorism.
In her speech at the forum, she emphasized that raising awareness of the Palestinian cause is the main theme of this year's forum.
She also highlighted the role of youth in spreading awareness of the Palestinian cause, especially in the age of digital media, and how to combat the phenomenon of misinformation by raising community awareness.
She noted that the forum is being held amidst growing international challenges, which calls for concerted efforts to confront extremism and enhance youth awareness of the major issues facing societies.
The Director of the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism called for continued efforts by Al-Azhar to serve youth and communities, emphasizing the need to push for change to achieve a better future.
The forum's first session was attended by: Counselor Mahmoud Fawzy, Minister of Parliamentary and Legal Affairs and Political Communication, Dr. Sahar Nasr, Secretary-General of the Egyptian House of Zakat, Ambassador Nabila Makram, Head of the Technical Secretariat of the National Alliance for Civil Development Action, Dr. Amal Imam, Executive Director of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society.
The Forum's second session was attended by Diaa Rashwan, Chairman of the State Information Service, Dr. Mohamed Kamal, Director of the Institute of Arab Research and Studies, Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim El-Duwairi, Deputy Director-General of the Egyptian Center for Thought and Strategic Studies.
The forum is one of the most prominent initiatives launched by the Al-Azhar Observatory since 2018, with the aim of providing an interactive space that enables young people to express their views and promote constructive dialogue between generations.

OPEN/ FM stresses Egypt's firm support for Yemen's legitimate government
CAIRO, June 22 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty stressed Egypt's firm support for the legitimate Yemeni government. Abdelatty briefed Zindani on Egypt's efforts aimed at resuming the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, especially in light of the worsening humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave. The two ministers tackled the rising tensions in the region amid the current Israeli-Iranian military conflict, where Abdelatty warned of the risks of dragging the Middle East into chaos, emphasizing the need to de-escalate the situation through political and diplomatic methods. US Strikes on Iran Raise Aviation Safety Fears
Israa Farhan The recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities have raised serious concerns about the safety of civil aviation in the Middle East, according to a leading airspace risk monitoring organization. As tensions intensify between Iran , Israel, and the United States, major airlines are cancelling flights and rerouting routes to avoid high-risk zones. Safe Airspace, a platform operated by aviation intelligence firm OPSGROUP, warned on Sunday that the US military action could significantly increase the threat to American carriers operating in the region. While no direct threats have been issued against civil aviation, the group pointed out that Iran has previously threatened to target US military interests in the Middle East—either directly or through proxy groups like Hezbollah. Commercial airlines have already been avoiding large swathes of airspace over Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Israel. According to data from FlightRadar24, air traffic continued to divert on Sunday, following routes over the Caspian Sea to the north or via Egypt and Saudi Arabia to the south, even at the cost of longer flight durations and increased fuel and crew expenses. The disruption follows over a week of escalating conflict, beginning with Israeli airstrikes on Iran on 13 June and followed by retaliatory missile launches by Tehran. As a result, many international carriers suspended flights to affected destinations; however, some evacuation flights are being operated from neighboring countries to repatriate stranded travelers, including Israelis. Israel briefly reopened its airspace for six hours on Sunday to allow the return of citizens who have been unable to fly home since the onset of the conflict. At Least 15 Killed in Suicide Bombing in Syria
Israa Farhan A deadly suicide bombing struck Saint Elias Church in the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, leaving at least 15 people dead and several others injured, according to local authorities. The Syrian Civil Defense reported a mass casualty incident at the Mar Elias Church in the Al-Dweila neighborhood, describing the explosion as a terrorist attack. Emergency response teams rushed to the site to recover bodies, assist the wounded, and secure the area. The Syrian Ministry of Interior later confirmed that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS). According to the ministry's statement, the attacker entered the church during a service, opened fire, and then detonated an explosive vest. Security forces were quickly deployed to the scene, sealing off the area and launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. Forensic teams have begun collecting evidence to identify the bomber and uncover potential accomplices. This marks one of the deadliest attacks in Damascus in recent years and comes amid rising concerns about the resurgence of extremist activity in Syria's urban centers. Although the Islamic State has largely lost its territorial hold in Syria, the group continues to carry out sporadic and lethal attacks across the country.
