Immanuel Feyi-Waboso's horror hit defines England's frustrating day and poses further questions

Independent16 hours ago

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso has been in a race against time to make it to Australia with the British and Irish Lions but any lingering hopes of that ended with a red card in an England XV defeat to a France XV at Allianz Stadium.
Sidelined for six months with a dislocated shoulder he suffered against Sale in December, the winger was looking to make up for lost time in his first game back but instead produced a horror high tackle on Antoine Hastoy in the first half of the 26-24 loss.
His lack of game time had effectively ended any hopes of a Lions call-up, but with a strong showing here and on England's tour of Argentina, there were hopes that the 22-year-old might make a case for being next in line in case of injury.
Steve Borthwick said before the game that Feyi-Waboso had been 'full of enthusiasm and full of energy' ahead of his return to action.
And yet in the half-hour he had on the pitch, the rust was obvious. A minute in he knocked the ball on in the French in-goal area when it seemed he would make a dream comeback.
Another knock-on followed midway through the first half before the key moment of the match. After a grubber through that he was never going to be able to chase down, the Exeter winger raced to try to close down Hastoy.
In a rush of blood he leapt and caught the La Rochelle fly half clear around the neck in the sort of old-fashioned clothesline tackle that has been eradicated from the game.
Even in the era of bunker reviews and 20-minute red cards, this should have resulted in instant permanent exclusion.
Instead, Feyi-Waboso was shown a yellow card which was quickly upgraded to red, with England down to 14 for 20 minutes rather than 50.
He will face a disciplinary hearing that will surely result in a ban that would keep him out of at least the Argentinian portion of England's summer tour, with Borthwick admitting the winger was distraught at the incident.
'He's gutted,' said Borthwick. 'You all know Manny. He's a good guy who tries his heart out. We'll all get round him and find out the situation in the next 24 hours.'
Away from the red card, there were positives for Borthwick to take, as his side overcame an early 12-0 lead to take control of the game.
They managed 24 unanswered points in front of the 34,129 supporters at a humid Allianz Stadium. But late tries from Guillaume Marchand and Romain Taofifenua ensured it was France's day, Hastoy converting with the clock in the red to earn a small measure of revenge for the one-point defeat they suffered here during the Six Nations.
After Feyi-Waboso's early knock-on, it was France who struck first, Gaetan Barlot taking advantage of consecutive maul penalties to force his way over.
Les Bleus made it 12-0 after a gliding run from the classy Theo Attissogbe, setting up Pau teammate Hugo Auradou, even if there looked to be a doubt over the grounding.
England responded through Tom Willis from close range after some extended pressure, although George Ford, co-captain on the day, was fortunate to be awarded the conversion after the shot clock in the stadium had expired well before he put boot to ball.
That was quickly followed by a try from Alex Coles as the French tackles started to slip off. Ford's conversion was just wide this time.
Even with Feyi-Waboso seeing yellow then red, the home side were in the ascendancy and they hit the front on the stroke of half-time.
Debutant Seb Atkinson juggled a ball in midfield causing the French defence to stutter. When he regathered and burst through, it seemed he would score himself but he ended up offloading to another newcomer, Joe Carpenter, for the third try.
Leading 19-12 at the break, France looked to have levelled just before the hour-mark with a stunning try from Leo Berdeu's brilliant high-ball catch when Emilien Gailleton burst through a gap and sent Nolann Le Garrec over for a try.
That was ruled out as Cameron Woki was spotted having connected with Jamie George's head at a ruck in the build-up – an incident missed by the officials and highlighted by the England co-captain.
The fact that Woki's yellow card was later upgraded to red was a shock when compared to the Feyi-Waboso incident.
England looked to be home and dry when Alex Dombrandt crashed over on the right with 20 minutes remaining, but they could not deliver the killer blow.
Marchand's try from a rolling maul set up a grandstand finish, and after some late English indiscipline, the experienced Taofifenua forced his way over and Hastoy converted from in front.
Having seen Argentina beat the Lions in Dublin on Friday night, England know the scale of the task that now awaits them in La Plata and San Juan. That challenge will now almost certainly be without one of their biggest X-factors.

Former England bowler David ‘Syd' Lawrence dies aged 61 after MND battle

David 'Syd' Lawrence, the pioneering cricketer who became the first British-born Black player to represent England, has died at the age of 61. A formidable bowler, Lawrence took 18 wickets across five Test matches for England between 1988 and 1992. His passing comes almost exactly a year after it was revealed he had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). The announcement of his diagnosis last year coincided with the death of rugby league legend Rob Burrow, who also succumbed to the incurable illness that progressively damages the nervous system. A statement from Lawrence's family given to the PA news agency said: 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with motor neurone disease. ''Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family who were with him when he passed. 'A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd took on every challenge with everything he could and his final contest with MND was no different. His willingness to encourage and think of others right up to the end was typical of the man he was.' As well as his six outings for England – having played a lone ODI against the West Indies at Lord's in 1991, collecting four for 67 – Lawrence bagged 625 wickets in 280 matches for Gloucestershire. A strapping fast bowler who was renowned for being one of the quickest on the county circuit, Lawrence began to establish himself in Tests and a five-for against the West Indies in 1991 helped England seal a series-levelling win at the Oval, with Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards among his haul. But Lawrence's career all but ended the following year as he badly fractured his kneecap after falling awkwardly when running into bowl on the final day of a Test against New Zealand in Wellington. His England days were immediately over aged 28 but he made a brief county comeback in 1997, playing four first-class games for Gloucestershire before hanging up his boots – 16 years after he first played professionally. Lawrence became a competitive bodybuilder following his retirement and he was also a nightclub owner in Bristol. After Lawrence detailed his experiences of racism during his playing career, Gloucestershire issued an unreserved apology in September 2021 and six months later he became the county's first Black president. The county side posted on X: 'Gloucestershire are devastated to learn of the passing of former player and club president, David 'Syd' Lawrence MBE, aged 61. 'Everyone at Gloucestershire would like to send their best wishes to David's family during this terribly sad time.' Following his MND diagnosis, there were emotional scenes when Gloucestershire went all the way in the T20 Blast last year, with captain James Bracey presenting the trophy to Lawrence at Edgbaston. Lawrence's family statement added: 'As president of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Syd took on the role with incredible pride and passion and loved every minute of it. 'Syd's wife Gaynor and son Buster thank everyone for the kindness and support that has been shown to them and the family so far and would ask that they are now given some time and space to grieve in private.' Only last week, Lawrence received an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours for his outstanding services to cricket, while he had been working to raise money and awareness of his condition. He said: 'It is an incredibly proud moment. It is not something that I ever thought would sit after my name, but I am absolutely delighted that it will do so for however long I am here and will be a part of my legacy when I am gone.' Lawrence's MND diagnosis hastened his autobiography as he worried he would lose the ability to speak. Titled 'In Syd's Voice', written with the help of Dean Wilson, the book was published this month. England and Wales Cricket Board chair Richard Thompson said on the governing body's website: 'David 'Syd' Lawrence was a true trailblazer of English cricket and a man of immense courage, character, and compassion. 'His impact on the game extended far beyond the boundary ropes. As a fast bowler, he thrilled crowds with his pace and passion. As a leader and advocate, he broke barriers and inspired change, becoming a powerful voice for inclusion and representation in our sport. 'Even in the face of his illness, David showed extraordinary strength and dignity, continuing to uplift others with his resilience and spirit. He leaves behind a legacy that will endure in the hearts of all who love cricket. 'Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire cricketing community at this time.'

'I'll never forget my final conversation with Shane Warne - his death shocked me'

'I'll never forget my final conversation with Shane Warne - his death shocked me' Shane Warne and Phil Tufnell were on opposite sides during the 1990s, and the pair often locked horns, but they still shared a close friendship away from the cricket field Shane Warne passed away on back in 2022 after suffering a heart attack (Image: Popperfoto via Getty Images ) After numerous memorable encounters with Shane Warne, former England cricketer Phil Tufnell's last interaction with the Australian was rather unassuming. With his charming personality, bamboozling spinning ability and habit of finding himself in the headlines, Tufnell, 59, could be considered England's answer to Warne. While Tufnell might not have sported an earring or the bleach blonde hair that gave Warne his movie-star looks, he nevertheless had the skill to bewilder batsmen and make the ball turn on command. Notably, Tufnell eclipsed Warne during the 1997 Ashes by securing 11 wickets compared to the Aussie's four, leading England to a narrow 19-run win in the sixth test against Australia. ‌ Friendship blossomed between the two after their international cricket careers ended, with both contributing their insights to media coverage. The world, along with Tufnell, was shocked by Warne's sudden death due to a heart attack at age 52 on March 4, 2022. ‌ Tufnell reflects on his final words with Warne fondly. It was simply a routine farewell post-match, followed by a light-hearted confirmation that they both had cigarettes on hand. Speaking at the launch of The Overlap and Betfair's Stick to Cricket show, Tufnell told the Mirror: "I do a little bit actually (remember his last conversation with Warne). "I think we were at a cricket match. We have a breakout group there, so we're BBC and he was at Sky. As usual, we all meet up for a fag, we both used to smoke. I tell you what, it was one of those where we were just chatting. Article continues below "It was virtually, 'Oh, well, see you later. See you next year. Cheers mate. You got a fag, yeah? Alright! Cheers mate. Ta, bye.' Warne and Tufnell had many battles on the field (Image: Popperfoto via Getty Images ) "Then, shortly afterwards (when news of the death was confirmed), it was like, 'F***, what?' That was the shock. We just couldn't believe it." ‌ Warne's sudden passing while on holiday in Thailand was deeply felt across the sport. Tufnell recalled exactly where he was when he heard the devastating news. He said: "I was driving along in my car and I thought they'd got it wrong. I thought they'd got it wrong because I think Rod Marsh, the legendary Australian wicket-keeper, had passed away two or three days beforehand. Tufnell will be starring on Betfair's Stick to Cricket show (Image: Betfair/Stick to Cricket podcast ) ‌ "I thought they had got that (Warne's death) wrong on the radio. Then I turned to another channel and they said it again. "I stopped the car. Stopped the car. I had been working with him not so long ago in the media centre at a cricket match, just chatting to him. I just couldn't believe it." Warne is universally recognised as the finest leg spinner in history, concluding his illustrious career with a tally of 708 wickets, second only to Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan, who bagged 800. Article continues below Betfair are set for a big summer and winter of cricket, launching a new show with The Overlap: Stick to Cricket. Don't miss the first episode next week, where the team will be reviewing the opening test of the series between England and India.
