Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo named global ambassador for Esports World Cup 2025
Cristiano Ronaldo is stepping into a new arena, but this time not on a football pitch. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has announced that he will be the global ambassador for the Esports World Cup 2025. The Portuguese forward shared the update on his official social media pages, saying he's proud to stand beside esports athletes who are inspiring the next generation. The news has created a huge buzz across both football and gaming circles, with fans excited to see the Al Nassr star championing the world of esports.
The upcoming Esports World Cup will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 8 to August 24. With a massive $70 million prize pool and 25 competitive games on show, it is set to be one of the biggest esports tournaments in history. Ronaldo's involvement only adds more star power and global attention to the event.

In his post, Ronaldo praised the drive and intensity shown by esports athletes and called it no different from what he has seen in traditional sports. He has been connected to gaming for years, having worked with Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer, and supported UFL, a Japanese football game that launched last year. Earlier in 2025, he even became a playable character in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, which will also feature in the Esports World Cup.
Ronaldo, who turns 40 this year, is still going strong in football. He helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League earlier this year by scoring in the final against Spain. His club form with Al Nassr has kept him in the spotlight as he balances football and now a bigger role in esports.
The Esports World Cup is more than just a tournament, rather it's a celebration of global gaming. With Ronaldo now leading the charge as its ambassador, the event is expected to draw attention from fans around the world who might be watching competitive gaming for the very first time.

Bayern, Flamengo reach Club World Cup last 16
New York, Jun 21 (UNI) Bayern Munich and Flamengo booked their places in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup on Friday with wins over Boca Juniors and Chelsea, while Benfica boosted its hopes of advancing after routing Auckland City. Esperance also kept alive its knockout-stage chances by edging past Los Angeles FC, which joined Auckland in exiting the tournament. In Philadelphia, Brazil's Flamengo moved three points clear at the top of Group D after recovering from a goal down to overcome Chelsea 3-1. Portuguese winger Pedro Neto put Chelsea ahead when he capitalized on Wesley Franca's miscued clearance to dribble almost half the length of the pitch before calmly shooting past Argentine goalkeeper Agustin Rossi. Flamengo equalized just after the hour through Bruno Henrique, who tapped home after Gonzalo Plata flicked on Gerson's cross. The Rio de Janeiro outfit suddenly had the momentum, and Henrique turned provider three minutes later as his header set up Danilo to volley home at the far post. Chelsea was reduced to 10 men in the 68th minute after Nicolas Jackson was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Lucas Ayrton. Wallace Yan put the result beyond doubt by playing a slick one-two with Plata before firing in from the edge of the six-yard box. "We always believed that we had a chance," Flamengo manager Filipe Luis said afterwards. "I'm very proud because after our mistake in giving away the first goal, we didn't drop our heads. We continued to play the same way. We gave our all until the end and that warms my heart." In Orlando, Angel Di Maria and Leandro Barreiro scored twice apiece as Benfica romped to a 6-0 victory over Auckland City. Benfica initially struggled to breach the New Zealand club's five-man defense but Di Maria broke the deadlock from the penalty spot just before halftime. It was all one-way traffic thereafter, despite a two-hour delay due to a storm alert. Vangelis Pavlidis, Renato Sanches, Barreiro and Di Maria were all on target in the second half as Benfica registered its first win of the tournament. The Portuguese side is now second in Group C with four points while Auckland City is last with 16 goals conceded in two matches. "This is the longest game of my career," Benfica head coach Bruno Lage said. "A special thanks to our fans, who have been here for five hours supporting the team. We played as well as we could. The [hot] temperature made it very difficult." In Nashville, Tunisia's Esperance kept alive its hopes of reaching the next stage with a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles FC. Youcef Belaili handed his side the lead in the 70th minute when he pounced on a loose ball in the area and drilled a low shot that deflected in off the left leg of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Esperance is now third in Group D and will need to beat Chelsea in Philadelphia on Tuesday to progress to the knockout phase. Los Angeles FC is fourth, having failed to pick up a point so far and with no chance of progressing. In Miami, France international midfielder Michael Olise scored late as Bayern Munich kept its perfect record intact with a 2-1 win over Argentine side Boca Juniors. Harry Kane opened the scoring for the Bundesliga champions when he intercepted a defensive clearance and fired low into the far corner with his weaker left foot. Uruguayan forward Miguel Merentiel equalized by running onto Alan Velasco's through ball and ghosting past Josip Stanisic before clinically finishing past Manuel Neuer. Olise restored Bayern's lead six minutes from time with a fizzing drive from distance after Kane's clever layoff. While the German club is assured of a place in the next round, Boca will need to defeat Auckland City by a hefty margin on Tuesday to have any chance of advancing. UNI RKM

From Cristiano Ronaldo to Michael Phelps: Unbeatable records in sports no athlete may ever surpass
Cristiano Ronaldo (via Getty Images) Certain sports records are numbers on paper—they're unattainable legacies of excellence. Players like Cy Young, Cristiano Ronaldo , Alex Ovechkin, and many more have etched records so extraordinary that they've taken on legendary status. These milestones transcend eras and competition, cementing athletes in history not just as stars but as symbols of near-impossible achievement. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lewis Hamilton, and several other athletes who redefined the concept of greatness 1. Cristiano Ronaldo: Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo's 128 international goals, 201 games, and scoring in five World Cups set him apart in global football. Adding to the mix, most UEFA Champions League goals in a season (17), Cristiano Ronaldo's records form a body of work that future generations can only be wowed by, not break. 2. Lewis Hamilton: In the highly competitive landscape of Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton has attained figures that are mechanical in their accuracy. His 105 victories, 104 pole positions, 202 podiums, seven world championships, and most points accumulated form a record book inscribed in his name. 3. Cy Young: In an age of bullpen relief and pitch counts, Cy Young's 511 wins throughout his baseball career are unthinkable. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo No pitcher now has even come close to 300 wins, and with the way pitchers are now employed, Young's record is sealed away in the baseball past. Boston Celtics: With league parity, salary caps, and tougher playoff systems, the Boston Celtics' eight-year title run (1959–1966) remains the only one in NBA history—and probably ever will. 5. Jerry Rice: No NFL wide receiver has come close to Jerry Rice's 22,895 career receiving yards. The longevity, dominance, and consistency required to break this record make it an unbreakable benchmark. 6. Michael Phelps: Michael Phelps owns a record 28 Olympic medals, 23 of which are gold. It's hard to picture another swimmer—or athlete of any sport—competing at this level throughout four Olympics again. 7. Alex Ovechkin: Alex Ovechkin's 895th goal made him stand alone atop the NHL career goals list. He broke Wayne Gretzky's record, which everyone thought would never be broken, at least for a long time. These are not just milestones. They're cultural moments. They represent eras of dominance, resilience, and extraordinary performance that future generations may never see again.
