‘We ate one egg between five': Malaysian Haj pilgrims detail nightmare journey to Mecca after alleged scam
SEPANG, June 15 — 'This is all Allah's will. You must accept it. The greater the hardship, the greater the reward.'
Those were reportedly the words used by a prominent religious figure to pacify a group of 49 Malaysian Haj pilgrims, many of them elderly, as what was promised to be a smooth pilgrimage instead became a harrowing and dangerous ordeal in Saudi Arabia.
The group, who returned to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today, allege they were deceived by a local Haj agent claiming to offer legitimate packages. Instead, they say they were forced to endure extreme hardship, including trekking through deserts and climbing rocky hills to enter Mecca without valid documentation.
Speaking to reporters at KLIA Terminal 1, a 63-year-old trader from Batu Pahat, Johor, said the ordeal began after their initial six-day stay in Madinah.
'Things were still manageable in Madinah. But once we were moved to Mecca, everything changed. We had to walk through deserts and climb hills. It was dangerous,' he said.
The pilgrims claim they were smuggled into the Holy City via unofficial and hazardous routes to avoid detection by Saudi authorities, as none of them possessed valid Haj visas, a violation of Saudi law that could carry serious legal and safety implications.
According to earlier reports, the group had departed for Saudi Arabia on May 9. They later claimed they were held in cramped, dark rooms and asked to pay an additional RM9,000 to retrieve their belongings despite already having paid RM30,000 each for the Haj package.
One of the returnees, a 64-year-old lecturer and wife of the Johor trader, described how food was scarce and the group was left to ration minimal meals.
'We shared one fried egg and two small fish between five people. Two pieces of chicken were divided among seven. When we asked why, the organiser told us to accept our fate and place our trust in God,' she said.
Forty-eight of the 49 pilgrims returned to Malaysia via Turkish Airlines flight TK60. One individual is believed to have continued their travels to Switzerland.
Police said three reports have been lodged by the victims' families and investigations are underway to identify those behind the suspected scam targeting pilgrims. — Bernama

24 evacuees from Iran arrive safely in Malaysia

The evacuees, who were on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH781, touched down at KLIA Terminal 1 at 11.03pm yesterday. They were welcomed by the foreign ministry's deputy secretary-general (bilateral affairs) Ahmad Rozian Abd Ghani. The group comprised 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens, and one Singaporean national. Malaysia's ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, who led the group, told the media they had to travel about 1,000km by land to exit Tehran. 'We chose a route away from the source of the attacks, which were coming from the west, so we headed east. Alhamdulillah, we received strong cooperation from the Turkmenistan government, which allowed foreign nationals to cross the border,' he said. He added that around 12 Malaysians were still in Iran, and that Wisma Putra was closely monitoring their situation to ensure their safety. According to a statement from Wisma Putra, all 24 individuals crossed the Iran–Turkmenistan border on June 21 and boarded Turkmenistan Airlines flight T5 647 on June 22 to Bangkok, Thailand, before continuing their journey to Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines flight MH781. The evacuation, coordinated by the Malaysian embassy in Tehran, involved a 1,120km land journey to the Iran-Turkmenistan border. The Malaysian embassies in Ashgabat and Bangkok facilitated flight arrangements from Ashgabat to Malaysia. The foreign ministry expressed its appreciation to the governments of Iran, Turkmenistan, and Thailand for their cooperation which enabled the smooth return home for the Malaysians. 'This evacuation process reflects the Malaysian government's continued commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of its citizens, in line with the core value of ihsan (compassion) under the Malaysia Madani framework,' the statement said. Wisma Putra also confirmed that the Malaysian embassy in Ashgabat had assisted in the repatriation of Bruneian citizens from Turkmenistan to their home country. It said the involvement of a Singaporean citizen in the evacuation and the assistance extended to Brunei nationals reflected Malaysia's readiness to offer support to citizens of fellow Asean nations, in the spirit of regional solidarity.

KLIA's Aerotrain service to resume July 1, says Loke
Two trains will be in service during the day time, and one between midnight and 5am. SEPANG : KLIA's new and improved Aerotrain service will start operating from 10am on July 1, transport minister Loke Siew Fook said today. He said the trains have entered the final phase of testing, which will be completed soon. 'If all goes smoothly as planned, we will resume the Aerotrain service on July 1,' he told a press conference at KLIA's Terminal 1 here today. The Aerotrain service was suspended in March 2023 for maintenance and upgrading work after several breakdowns. It had been expected to resume in the second quarter of this year. The service had been the backbone of KLIA's internal transport network since 1998. Loke said three trains, each with a maximum capacity of 270 passengers, will be in operation between KLIA Terminal 1 and the satellite terminal, which is mainly used for international arrivals and departures. Two trains will be in operation throughout the day but only one train will be in service between midnight and 5am. He said the bus services, launched after the breakdown of the Aerotrain service in 2023, would continue until further notice. Loke admitted that the relaunch of the Aerotrain service had missed the deadline previously announced by airport operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and the transport ministry, but said this was due to the ministry's strict safety regulations. 'The safety of the passengers comes first, so we did not allow the service to resume until we were satisfied with the safety results,' he said.
