Centre to extend all help to make Tripura ‘aatmanirbhar' in animal husbandry, fisheries sectors: Union Minister

Indian Express17-05-2025

Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh Saturday said the Centre would extend all required assistance to make Tripura atmanirbhar (self-dependent) in milk and fish production.
Speaking at the inauguration of a milk processing plant at Bamutia in West Tripura district, Singh said milk production is increasing by 6 per cent in India every year against the world average of a 2 per cent hike.
'Tripura has huge scope in the animal husbandry and fisheries sector,' the minister further said.
Sharing a success story of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the Union minister stated that the capacity of milk collection at an old milk collection centre in Varanasi increased to 3 lakh litres per day from 11,000 litres per day after it was taken over by NDDB.
He, thereafter, asked the Tripura government to take strong initiatives to eradicate foot and mouth disease among cattle, stating that any outbreak of the disease makes it difficult to export dairy products to European countries.
The newly launched milk processing unit in Tripura can handle 40,000 litres of milk every day, of which 10,000 litres would be turned into curd and buttermilk.
Tripura set a 10-year target for food self-sufficiency in 2002-03.
The target was not achieved at the time of evaluation in 2012-13, with barely 25,000 MT of meat, 12.5 crore eggs and 1.05 MT of milk produced annually. Later, the erstwhile Left Front government set a new target for self-sufficiency in food production by 2020. But despite repeated attempts, it failed to cut down on its import dependency.
In 2020, then chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb said his government was trying to double the income of farmers, including those in the dairy and poultry sectors.

Revanth ready to invite Naidu for talks on Telangana-Andhra water disputes

HYDERABAD: Asserting that his government does not rake up controversies but strives to address all issues, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday said that he was ready to invite his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu to initiate a dialogue on interstate water disputes, including the proposed Godavari-Banakacherla project, subject to Cabinet decision. During an informal chat with reporters in Delhi, the chief minister said that he would hold a Cabinet meeting on June 23 to discuss the possibilities of initiating a dialogue with Andhra Pradesh to protect the water rights of Telangana. He made it clear that his government prefers to maintain healthy relations with sibling state of Andhra Pradesh as it does with Karnataka. The CM also noted that Telangana's approval is a must in case there are any changes in the Polavaram project. He, however, said that the Andhra Pradesh state led by N Chandrababu Naidu should also support Telangana's irrigation project, stating that all the projects proposed on Godavari projects to utilise 968 tmc are still pending with the Centre. Objecting to the Centre acting just on the 'feasibility report', the CM said that it is unjustifiable to seek permission for the Godavari-Banakacherla (G-B) project without approvals from the Technical Committee, Committee of Group of Officers, and Apex Council, and that too without taking Telangana into confidence.

Op Sindoor reflects inner strength of armed forces attained by practising Yoga: Rajnath

Jammu, June 21 (UNI) Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that Indian Armed Forces displayed restraint, balance and precision during the operation, which is a reflection of their inner strength attained by practising yoga. Singh led the Armed Forces in celebrating the 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) by performing various asanas and breathing exercises with approximately 2,500 soldiers at Northern Command, Udhampur, in Jammu and Kashmir. In his address, he credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for popularising yoga globally and highlighted that the practice provides a holistic approach to health and well-being. He termed yoga a universal solution to the problems faced by people in today's fast-paced world, such as stress, anxiety and depression. 'Yoga gives clarity to the people in chaos. It is an art, a science, a philosophy, and spirituality. Those who practise yoga in their daily lives have control over their body and mind. It makes us proactive, not reactive,' Singh said. Describing Operation Sindoor as a shining example of that control, Rajnath Singh stated that the Indian Armed Forces displayed restraint, balance and precision during the operation, which is a reflection of their inner strength attained by practising yoga. He stated that India's social and communal unity was targeted through the Pahalgam terror attack, and Operation Sindoor was a clear message to Pakistan that it will face the consequences for supporting terror activities against India. 'Operation Sindoor is the natural progression of the surgical strike of 2016 and the air strike of 2019. It was executed in such a way that Pakistan requested a ceasefire, and only then did we put a pause to the operation. As I have said earlier, Operation Sindoor is not over yet. India is fully prepared to take all kinds of action against terrorism,' said Singh. He asserted that Pakistan wants to weaken India from within, but it should never forget that just like Major Somnath Sharma, Brigadier Usman too sacrificed his life for the unity and integrity of the country. He added that when the nation is celebrating International Day of Yoga, it should remember the true meaning of the practice, which is to connect every section of society with the culture and soul of India. 'If even one section is left behind, the wheel of unity and security is broken. Therefore, today, we should perform yoga at the level of society and thought and not just the body,' he said. Singh appreciated the inclination of the Armed Forces personnel towards yoga, which has a direct impact on their discipline and focus. "Yoga prepares a soldier physically and mentally, and its benefits can be seen on the battlefield," he said, encouraging the soldiers to continue practising it daily," said the defence minister. Reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that 'Yoga is India's gift to the world', he stated that it is not just a diplomatic quote but a vision. Through yoga, India has given the world a tool which is beyond any border, religion, and culture, he said. Singh pointed out that the theme of International Day of Yoga each year – One Earth, One Health this year – sends a global message that India thinks not only for itself but for the welfare of the world. 'The whole world is a family, and working for it is a part of our thinking. Yoga is a practical expression of this thinking,' he said. He added that yoga is silently changing the world, and every citizen should be proud of the fact that India's ancient tradition is being recognised and accepted globally. He dubbed it as a responsibility to not just practice yoga as a trend but make it a way of life. 'There is a need to incorporate yoga as a resolution in our lives. It should be a part of our daily routine, as it brings positive changes in everyone's life,' he said while concluding his speech. The event was attended by Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command Lt Gen Pratik Sharma. All the participants witnessed the Prime Minister's speech on IDY 2025, which he delivered during the main event from Visakhapatnam. Yoga sessions were also performed at numerous forward locations in the challenging terrain of the J&K and Ladakh regions, showcasing the commitment and enthusiasm of our soldiers. UNI VBH ARN

Israel-Iran War: Trump weighs U.S. strikes as Tehran warns of ‘Dangerous' escalation

As Israel and Iran continued their escalating conflict into its second week, tensions deepened on Friday, June 20, with U.S. President Donald Trump indicating he may authorize airstrikes on Iran — giving Tehran a two-week window to avert potential military action. This comes as diplomatic talks in Geneva between Iranian officials and European ministers ended with no breakthrough. President Trump said any American involvement would target Iran's Fordo nuclear site, a hardened underground facility believed to be accessible only via U.S. 'bunker-buster' munitions. While Trump is holding off on a final decision, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue military operations "for as long as it takes" to neutralize Iran's nuclear and missile threat. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, following the Geneva talks, warned that U.S. intervention would be 'very, very dangerous for everyone.' Tehran, he added, will not resume diplomatic dialogue unless Israel halts its 'aggression.' Meanwhile, on the ground, Israel carried out a second strike on Iran's nuclear site in Isfahan, reportedly inflicting heavy damage to centrifuge infrastructure. In retaliation, drones struck a residential building in northern Israel, though no casualties were reported. Russia weighed in as well, with President Vladimir Putin stating there's no evidence that Iran seeks nuclear weapons — aligning with IAEA's assessment. Putin said Moscow supports Iran's right to a peaceful nuclear program and is urging both nations to end the bloodshed. Amidst this chaos, misinformation has become rampant. AI-generated deepfakes and manipulated footage are blurring fact and fiction, fueling online disinformation campaigns. This digital fog is compounding the already tense information war surrounding the conflict. A bizarre moment occurred when a British-Iranian woman trying to reach her mother in Tehran was answered by a robotic voice in broken English — further highlighting the surreal intersection of war and technology. In a dramatic statement, a senior aide to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, vowed that IAEA chief Rafael Grossi would 'pay' after the war, accusing him of making conflicting statements that gave Israel a pretext for its surprise attacks. With diplomacy faltering and military actions intensifying, the region remains on a knife's edge — and global leaders are scrambling to contain a conflict that risks spiraling far beyond the Middle East.
