Over 140 Pretoria police vehicles parked and out of service
Pretoria's policing capacity has taken a significant knock, with 145 police vehicles currently out of service across the city.
The alarming figures revealed in recent data highlight mounting pressure on already strained resources—sparking concerns over crime response times and public safety in key areas, including Mamelodi East, Pretoria Central, and Silverton.
The information was revealed in a written reply by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to questions posed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
The DA has slammed the Lesufi-led administration for failing to prioritise public safety, warning that inoperative police vehicles are leaving communities vulnerable to crime.
It was revealed that crime prevention efforts in Gauteng are being severely hampered by a shortage of operational police vehicles, with 710 out of 5,630 vehicles across the province currently out of service.
This includes major shortages at stations like Ivory Park (16 out of 78 vehicles) and Pretoria Central (14 out of 80).
Here is the complete list of the affected police stations in and around Pretoria:

Mozambican kidnapping kingpin shot, killed in police op
What started as a search for a kidnapped Pretoria West businessman ended in the fatal shooting of a 40-year-old Mozambican kidnapping kingpin in Fourways, Johannesburg, by police this week. According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the anti-kidnapping task team were tracing a kidnapped Pakistani national when their search led them to a residential complex in Carlswald, Midrand. 'They seized a Mercedes Benz and a silver Pajero and arrested two kidnappers,' Mathe said. 'Police proceeded to Fourways where the task team announced their arrival and a shoot-out ensued. One suspect was fatally wounded.' Mathe said that, upon further investigation, it was discovered that the deceased was 40-year-old Mauro Mucambe Junior, who is wanted in Mozambique, where he has been linked to several kidnappings. 'His warrant of arrest was issued by Maputo Police in August 2024. One unlicensed firearm used by the fatally wounded fugitive of justice was seized including 10 rounds of ammunition. Four cellphones and four bank cards have also been seized.' The kidnapped Pakistani businessman is still missing and a ransom has been demanded from the family, according to Mathe. 'We have full faith and confidence in the work of the anti-kidnapping task team to rescue the kidnapped businessman,' Mathe said. 'Since January 2024 to date, the team has arrested more than 170 criminals involved in kidnappings for ransom. More than R1.2 million has been recovered. More than 100 victims were rescued mainly in Gauteng and more than 40 vehicles used in kidnapping crimes were also seized by the team. 'The anti-kidnapping task team recently registered a breakthrough in the Olorato Mongale murder case where they led the tracing operation of Philangenkosi Makhanya. The search is still on for Bongani Mthimkhulu.' ALSO READ: Mamelodi family awaits DNA test results of charred body Do you have more information about the story? Nkomazi Local Municipality CFO suspended
The CFO of the Nkomazi Local Municipality, Steven Thobela, has been put on suspension pending an investigation into his alleged financial misconduct. The municipality suspended Thobela with effect from last week Friday, June 13, following a council resolution that was taken at the KaMdladla Community Hall. 'The suspension stems from several allegations of financial misconduct against the CFO. The suspension will allow proper investigation to be undertaken and also allow the official to clear his name if the allegations are not true,' said the municipality's spokesperson, Mbuso Malale. Sipho Mathaba has been appointed as an acting CFO pending the finalisation of the investigations against Thobela. Malale refused to elaborate on the merits of the investigations saying it was sub-judice. Thobela's suspension comes just a month after the municipal manager (MM) Xolani Mabila resigned without giving reasons. ALSO READ: Nkomazi court sentences rapist to 12 years in jail According to Malale, the reasons for Mabila's resignation remained close to his own chest, but unconfirmed reports suggested it was related to alleged corruption within the municipality The suspension of the CFO and the resignation of the MM come in the midst of serious corruption allegations by the DA against the municipality. The DA councillor in the Nkomazi Local Municipality, Nhlonipho Dlamini, said the party urged the provincial Department of Co-operative Governance Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) to intervene in the alleged corruption within the municipality. The DA in Nkomazi will write to Coghsta to investigate municipal officials implicated in the delay of upgrading the Naas Water Treatment Works project. The project which aimed to alleviate water challenges for residents around Naas and neighbouring towns was initiated in September 2020. However, the project has cost the municipality over R39m to date and has been delayed by more than two years,' said Dlamini in a statement. 'It is understood that the project was supposed to be completed in different phases. However, according to the Auditor-General's 2023/24 Management Report, the municipality has poorly managed this project. These are some of the alarming findings that the AG flagged,' added Dlamini. 'These items include mechanical and electrical equipment to the value of R2m. The municipality stored some of the equipment to the value of R7m off-site while there is no written agreement with suppliers regarding warranty and insurance,' said Dlamini. ALSO READ: City of Mbombela sounds alarm on tender scam According to him, at some point, the contractor had halted the project due to cash flow problems and that the municipality had failed to impose penalties against the contractor. 'The municipality paid for equipment before it was procured by the contractor from the supplier (up to 15 months in advance). It was also revealed that at some point the municipality failed to efficiently dispatch water tankers to communities affected by the upgrading of the Naas water treatment works project,' Dlamini said. 'Coghsta must intervene and regulate the implementation of infrastructure projects. It cannot be business as usual while money meant for service delivery is misused,' added Dlamini At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading! Two due in the docks for fatal stabbing of Grade 11 learner
Two due in the docks for fatal stabbing of Grade 11 learner Two learners, aged 19, are expected to appear before the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate's Court on June 20, facing a charge of murder. The duo are linked to the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old Grade 11 learner at Lesedi Secondary School in Lethabong, an informal settlement in Donkerhoek, east of Pretoria. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said their investigations revealed that the victim was attacked by two learners outside the school premises on June 18. The two fled on foot after the stabbing. Masondo said it is reported that the deceased was attacked by the first suspect, who stabbed him in the upper body. 'He was taken to the nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival,' Mavela explained. He said police opened a case of murder and searched for the two learners from the same school, who were persons of interest in this case. The family of the deceased said they are still in shock and could not believe that their son was murdered in such a brutal way. The deceased 's aunt, Shirley Mokonyane (64), said the family wants justice, and the police must speed up their investigations. She said their family was heartbroken. She said the law and the courts must make an example of the learners and hand down a sentence that will permanently remove the suspects from society. She also said the government needs to do something about the safety of children at school. Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said the department was deeply saddened by the fatal stabbing. According to preliminary reports, the matric learners did not attend school that day but allegedly arrived after school, just as learners were boarding their scholar transport. The two learners allegedly proceeded to attack the victim just outside the school yard. Do you have more information about the story? Please send us an email to bennittb@ or phone us on 083 625 4114.
