(AP) The suit was settled within hours, but was followed by dozens of similar legal claims and touched off a criminal investigation. Here's what you need to know about the 38-year-old star witness. A singer, actor, dancer and model, Cassie's professional ambitions began in adolescence, when she signed to the top-tier talent and modelling agency Wilhelmina. Her music career launched shortly thereafter, when she left her home state of Connecticut for New York, where she signed with manager Tony Mottola and first met Combs. Cassie is perhaps best known for the 2006 hit single Me & U , which secured the number one spot on the Billboard Hot RnB/Hip-Hop songs chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 all genres chart. It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The song was the lead single of her only studio album, released by Combs' Bad Boy Records, and was self-titled. She left the label in 2019. Cassie with Diddy in 2015. (Charles Sykes/Invision/AP) As an actor, she appeared in several television and film projects including Fox's Empire , The Perfect Match and Spenser Confidential . She made her acting debut in 2008 in Step Up 2: The Streets and contributed the song Is It You to its soundtrack. She appeared in a number of music videos as well, including Wiz Khalifa's Roll Up and Mario's Just A Friend 2002. Although she never released her long-teased sophomore album, at one point tentatively titled Electro Love , she did drop a few tracks: the RnB-pop Official Girl with Lil Wayne, Must Be Love with Combs, and Let's Get Crazy with Akon. And in 2012, Nicki Minaj tapped her for a feature on The Boys from Minaj's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up . Cassie is also a wife and a mother. She married personal trainer Alex Fine in September 2019. Their first daughter, Frankie Stone Fine, was born that same year and they welcomed their second daughter, Sunny Cinco Fine, in 2021. She is currently pregnant with their third child, a son . Cassie Ventura wipes tears from her eye while testifying in Manhattan federal court. (AP) Cassie met Combs in 2005 when she was 19 and he was 37. He signed her to his Bad Boy Records label and, within a few years, they started dating. In her 2023 civil lawsuit, Cassie alleges Combs trapped her in a "cycle of abuse, violence, and sex trafficking" for more than a decade, including raping her and forcing her to engage in sex acts with male sex workers. Combs settled the lawsuit the next day. In May 2024, CNN aired video that showed Combs attacking Cassie in a hotel hallway in 2016. The video closely mirrored an assault described in her lawsuit, which said Combs had already punched her that night, and she was trying to leave the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles when he woke and came after her. This frame grab taken from hotel security camera video and aired by CNN appears to show Sean "Diddy" Combs attacking singer Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel hallway in March 2016. (AP) In the footage, a man who appears to be Diddy, wearing only a towel, punches Cassie, kicks her, and throws her on to the floor. The lawsuit alleges Combs paid US$50,000 ($77,268.41) to bury the video at the time. Later, Combs apologised for the assault on Cassie in his first real acknowledgment of wrongdoing since the stream of allegations began. Among other things, Cassie alleges Combs raped her when she tried to leave him and often punched, kicked and beat her, causing injuries including bruises, burst lips, black eyes and bleeding. She also alleges that Combs was involved in blowing up rival rapper Kid Cudi's car when he learned that Cudi was romantically interested in her, and she alleges that Combs ran out of his home with guns when he learned that Suge Knight, a rival producer, was eating at a nearby diner. On the first day of Combs' sex trafficking trial, a witness, Daniel Phillip, said he was a professional stripper who was paid US$700 to US$6000 ($1081.76 to $9272.21) to have sex with Cassie while Combs watched and gave instructions, with the first encounter in 2012. Phillip told jurors that he stopped meeting with the couple after he saw Combs throw a bottle at her and then drag her by her hair into a bedroom as she screamed. Nicholas Hoult had an 'instinct' that he would play Lex Luthor in Superman
Nicholas Hoult had an "instinct" that he could play Lex Luthor in Superman. The 35-year-old actor is playing the Man of Steel's arch-nemesis in the forthcoming DC Universe (DCU) blockbuster and felt that he was perfect for the antagonist, even though he was auditioning for the lead role that ended up going to David Corenswet. Speaking to Empire magazine, Nicholas said: "I remember reading the script for the first time and there was a tiny little piece of my instinct that was like, 'You might be a good Lex', or, 'You might have fun playing this character.' "But I brushed it aside. I wasn't listening to my instincts, which I guess is not a good thing. So I went and did the test and enjoyed that, but then when James (Gunn) called me (and told me he wanted me for Lex Luthor), I didn't say anything at first – I just cackled! Because there was an instant flash in my brain where I went, 'Oh, you knew this would be best.' "So there was a moment of excitement, joy, thrill, and then also I'd say relief or something, where I was like, 'Oh, this has ended up how it should have done if I had kind of listened to my gut early on.'" Hoult also felt that the role of Lex Luthor provided him with the opportunity to "combine" all the things he has learnt during his recent film projects. The Nosferatu actor said: "There was something about Lex where I looked at it and (thought that)... Mishmashing all these things that I've been doing recently together, or I feel like I've learned as an actor, and grown into these last few years – all of these things combined and put into this could be a good flavour." Nicholas explained that he took inspiration from previous depictions of the villain by the late Gene Hackman during the 1970s and 1980s and Michael Rosenbaum's portrayal in the TV series Smallville. He said: "Gene's one of my all-time faves, just as an actor in general. I went back and watched Gene. "And Michael Rosenbaum, who was the first Lex I saw, growing up watching Smallville (on TV). "It's interesting when you play a character that's been played before – you're working from a different script, but it's fun to draw inspiration from all of those places." Nicholas is relishing the parts he is being able to play at this stage of his career and plans to carry on doing "unexpected things" on the big screen. The Renfield star said: "I don't have a master plan. (But) it seems like a lot of the performances that I grew up loving, or specifically when actors would go on runs of things, (it) seemed to be in their thirties and forties. "So I've always been excited about this period of my career. So, keep trying to do unexpected things. And take some risks."

Comedian Margaret Cho says Ellen DeGeneres was ‘not nice' to her
Don't miss out on the headlines from Celebrity Life. Followed categories will be added to My News. Comedian Margaret Cho has spoken out about her 'creepy and weird' encounters with Ellen DeGeneres. Joining the chorus of people to air their unpleasant stories about the former talk show host, who now lives on a farm in the UK, Cho revealed she opened for DeGeneres at comedy clubs in the 1980s before they both hit the big time. Years later, Cho said she was invited as a guest on DeGeneres' talk show, where she claimed the host pretended they had never met before. 'Ellen was really weird and not nice to me for most of my career,' Cho said on The Kelly Mantle Show podcast. 'I opened for her in the 1980s, when she was a headliner in comedy clubs. Later, when I would do her talk show in the 2000s, she would act like we just met. And I'm like, 'Bitch, what?' That's weird. We go way back. It's so creepy and weird.' Margaret Cho made the revelation on The Kelly Mantle Show. Ellen DeGeneres has been the subject of claims she's 'not nice'. Picture: AP Things got weirder as Cho, 56, recalled a bizarre broadcast edit she felt was a personal swipe from DeGeneres, 67. Remembering how she attended a David Bowie concert in a 'Chinese emperor outfit', Cho said the late singer went on DeGeneres' show the very next day where he talked at length about the comedian's fabulous attire at his show. 'The producer, who's a really good friend of mine, had to call me and tell me, 'I can't believe she did this, but she cut it out of the show,'' Cho said. '[The producer continued] 'But you need to know that he was going on and on about your outfit. God [Bowie] said your name. He loves you.'' While unsure if the comments were cut for another reason, Cho conceded, 'I'm going to take it personally.' Cho claimed David Bowie's comments were cut from the broadcast. Picture:/AFP DeGeneres, who is married to Australian actress Portia de Rossi, quit her long-running talk show in 2022 following widespread reports of a toxic environment on-set. It all started when a March 2020 tweet claimed DeGeneres was 'notoriously one of the meanest people alive', which was met by more than 1000 replies of people detailing their not-so-nice experiences with her. The aftermath was even more brutal, with countless Ellen staff coming forward on the record with their own stories of bullying. Addressing claims for the first time after her return to TV for the show's 18th season months later, DeGeneres admitted she was a 'work in progress' but pleaded to viewers that she is still 'the person you see on TV'. Ellen ended her talk show after nearly 20 years. Picture: Warner Bros 'As you may have heard this summer there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show and then there was an investigation. I learned that things happened here that never should've happened,' she said at the time. 'I take that very seriously, and I want to say I'm so sorry to the people who were affected.' She admitted being known as the 'be kind' lady is 'a tricky position to be in'. 'Sometimes I get sad. I get mad. I get anxious. I get frustrated. I get impatient. And I am working on all of that. I am a work in progress,' she said. 'And I am especially working on the impatience thing because … and it's not going well because it's not happening fast enough.' DeGeneres moved to the UK with de Rossi late last year, shortly after US President Donald Trump was elected. X SUBSCRIBER ONLY She's shared brief glimpses on social media of her quieter life living on a sprawling property. It is unclear where in the UK DeGeneres and de Rossi have relocated to, but they are rumoured to have set up in the English countryside. Shortly after news of the couple's big move broke, the two were spotted out with a group of friends at The Farmer's Dog in the Cotswolds, a countryside region in England. They had earlier in the year sold two of their homes in Montecito, California, in March and August. Originally published as Comedian Margaret Cho says Ellen DeGeneres was 'not nice' to her

Sean ‘Diddy' Combs' trial hears he ‘become extremely creative in drugs'
Sean 'Diddy' Combs is said to have become 'extremely creative' when allegedly on drugs. The 55-year-old rapper is continuing to stand trial in New York on federal charges including sex trafficking and racketeering, and Friday's (20.06.25) hearing was told by Brendan Paul, 26, the former Syracuse University basketball player who became Combs' personal assistant, the mogul would change if he was on illegal substances. Brendan, who worked for Combs from late 2022 until March 2024, testified under immunity after being arrested that same month at Miami's Opa‑Locka airport – with cocaine he said belonged to Comb – in a seizure that coincided with FBI raids on Combs' homes in Los Angeles and Miami Beach. The former assistant to the rapper detailed how he was tasked with buying drugs for Combs between five and 10 times, spending up to $500 on cocaine, ketamine, ecstasy and marijuana. He recalled one occasion when Combs asked him to try 'tusi', or pink cocaine, to evaluate its quality. Brendan said: 'I wanted to prove my loyalty' – adding: 'We continued on with our night.' Under cross‑examination by defence attorney Brian Steel, Brendan also affirmed: 'Absolutely not' when asked if he had been a drug mule for Combs. He said the rapper only asked him to carry small amounts of drugs, and text messages seen by jurors confirmed requests for Xanax and ketamine, while procurement of marijuana strains such as 'King Louis' and 'Sunset Sherbet' was repeatedly made. Brendan described helping set up drug‑fuelled sex parties – dubbed 'wild king nights' or 'Freak‑Offs' – in hotel rooms and private homes, preparing lubricants, baby oil, liquor and drug‑filled Gucci pouches for the events. He told the court that during these episodes, he would clean up afterwards wearing gloves to avoid hotel damage charges. Brendan also said he once went three days with only brief naps while working for Combs, relying on Adderall and cocaine to sustain himself. And he said Combs frequently fired and rehired him – including for forgetting a Lululemon fanny pack on a walk – before being welcomed back into his staff. When probed on his feelings toward Combs, Brendan replied: 'It's complicated' Prosecutors, having called six weeks' worth of witnesses including ex‑girlfriends, employees and rap artist Kid Cudi, are expected to close their case by Monday. (24.06.25) Combs, who has pleaded not guilty to charges including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, remains detained in Brooklyn and faces a potential life sentence if convicted on all counts – which he has denied.
