Malaysiakini08-05-2025

Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd ('Asia Mobiliti') has become the latest company to adopt CommercePay's advanced payment gateway, a move expected to significantly streamline digital transactions and enhance operational efficiency across its suite of urban mobility services.
The partnership was formalised recently between Asia Mobiliti CEO Ramachandran Muniandy and Commerce.Asia Group of Companies Group CEO Kuna Kathigesan.
Describing the decision to implement CommercePay, Ramachandran said the platform offered a 'rapid, efficient and secure payment process, eliminating the burdens of setup and annual maintenance fees that many competitors impose.'
He added that CommercePay's high flexibility in customising payment flows to match Asia Mobiliti's user experience and app design was a key factor. 'The support for payment tokenisation for bank cards and the TNG eWallet ensures that our mobility services remain at the forefront of technological innovation and customer convenience.'
'Its developer-friendly APIs and dedicated technical support have enabled us to integrate the solution swiftly, while its customisable design makes it ideal for agile, tech-driven companies like ours that require partners who can move and adapt at our pace,' he said.
Kuna, meanwhile, said that CommercePay has 'taken the market' by storm due to its versatility and ease of integration.
'CommercePay is designed to meet the diverse needs of businesses across e-commerce, live commerce, social commerce and mobile commerce,' he said. 'We have a highly experienced team with decades of experience and are committed to make our platform as user-friendly and conducive as possible.'
'We are now focused on launching innovative solutions to encourage online payment adoption in rural areas where uptake is still low. Our goal is to break down barriers and bring meaningful progress to these communities.'
Asia Mobiliti, an award winning Malaysian-based Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform and digital city solutions provider, is recognised for its efforts in modernising urban transport in emerging markets. Its core offerings include connected vehicle systems, Demand-Responsive Transit, multimodal journey planning engine and advanced IoT systems for predictive analytics.
'These initiatives are about solving the real-world challenges of urban mobility,' said Asia Mobiliti Chief Commercial Officer Vicks Kanagasingam.
'Integrating CommercePay reinforces our commitment to improving the overall user experience. Its fast and stable payment processing allows our users to book rides seamlessly with minimal delay, which is essential for a smooth transit experience.
'This reliability and scalability also enable us to support growing user volumes without friction, helping us expand our operations efficiently,' Vicks added, further explaining that the platform's flexibility and proven performance make it well-suited for Asia Mobiliti's broader urban tech rollout, where a dependable and adaptable payment solution is critical.'
Since its launch, CommercePay has rapidly gained traction among digital businesses, with hundreds of merchants now using the platform.
Among them are BizApp, Malaysia's largest rural-focused social commerce platform supporting agent-based businesses and Bumiputera entrepreneurs, and Xamble Creators, which connects content creators with brands for impactful collaborations.
'As we welcome Asia Mobiliti into the CommercePay ecosystem, we are all excited about the opportunity to demonstrate how mobility and fintech can work together to create more inclusive, seamless digital experiences,' Kuna said.
'This partnership goes beyond payment innovation to support our broader mission of driving digital adoption, both in urban areas and across underserved communities across. Whether it is a startup, SME or emerging tech company, CommercePay empowers businesses to scale by providing flexible, reliable and efficient payment solutions that grow with them.'

CAAM To Be Made Financially Independent Statutory Body Effective Aug 1

GENERAL PUTRAJAYA, June 23 (Bernama) -- The government has agreed to make the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) a Remunerated Separated and Exempted Statutory Body (BBDSB) effective Aug 1, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. In a press conference here today, he said the matter was agreed by the Cabinet on June 11, which approved the proposal to make CAAM a BBDSB. 'This means that this statutory body will no longer require financial injections from the government through annual allocations. At the same time, it is also not subject to the government's remuneration system. 'It is exempted from remuneration and separated from the government. So, it will be an independent body in terms of finances and also its remuneration,' he said. Loke said this decision is in line with the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen the national aviation institution. 'It also ensures that Malaysia remains a country with a technical and economic aviation regulatory system that is credible, competent and meets international standards,' he said. He said CAAM has the ability to operate as a BBDSB because it records a certain amount of profit through certain charges to, among others, international airlines and parties that use Malaysian airspace. 'So right now, our estimated revenue for this year is about RM400 million. We have collected approximately RM150 million in the first five months of this year, so the revenue for the first five months of this year has exceeded the entire year of last year. "That has given us the confidence that it will be financially independent and sustainable. And that is also one of the important conditions for the Cabinet and for JPA (the Public Service Department) to grant CAAM as BBDSB," he said.

Johan: Government to closely monitor potential impact from ongoing geopolitical tension

KUALA LUMPUR — The government is closely monitoring the ongoing geopolitical situation and its potential impact on the Malaysian economy, particularly in the wake of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) expansion. Treasury Secretary-General Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican said the high level of uncertainty due to geopolitical developments in the Middle East draws a premature conclusion on how it might influence inflation and the cost of living domestically. 'I do recall back when we had the Ukraine war, there was just so much uncertainty. We don't know to what extent the situation may escalate and how that might impact the economy. 'Initially, we had thought that the Russia-Ukraine war would not affect us much because we do not have much trade with either country. We were quite wrong. It turned out that Ukraine was the major supplier of feed. Therefore, we suddenly saw an increase in agricultural inputs, which impacted prices,' he said at the Concorde Club session today. Johan said given the ongoing conflict is in the Middle East, there will be some impact on oil prices, one of the key factors in Malaysia's inflation outlook. He said oil prices have been fluctuating significantly, having started the year in the mid-US$70 range, dipped to the low US$60 last month and recently climbed again amid regional instability. 'But at least, year-to-date, inflation has remained below 2.0 per cent thus far. We saw a Maybank estimate of an impact of 0.25 per cent on the consumer price index (CPI) as a result of SST. 'Our internal estimates are in that order of magnitude as well. But if the situation escalates, we certainly need to see how that impacts in terms of economic growth,' he said. For now, Johan said the ministry will continue to monitor developments and adjust its economic strategies as needed to maintain price stability and protect Malaysians from sudden cost-of-living pressures. The expanded SST to improve national fiscal stability without overburdening the public is set to take effect from July 1, 2025. The government expects additional SST to increase by RM5 billion in 2025 and by RM10 billion in 2026 following the review and expansion of the tax scope. On RON95, Johan said the government remains committed to rationalising fuel subsidies through a targeted approach, with the implementation of RON95 petrol subsidy reforms anticipated in the second half of 2025. 'The exact timing and structure are still subject to Cabinet decision,' he said. He said the move mirrors earlier reforms undertaken for electricity tariffs and diesel subsidies, which introduced tiered pricing mechanisms to protect lower and middle-income groups while curbing leakages. — BERNAMA
