Singapore court jails tutor for molesting students, secretly filming 951 lewd videos in public and at home

Malay Mail3 days ago

SINGAPORE, June 18 — A private tutor was sentenced to four years and nine months in jail yesterday for committing obscene acts behind his female students, secretly filming them and engaging in lewd acts in public.
Michael Martin Lee Teck Heng, 58, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including one count of committing an obscene act, one count of making obscene films, three counts of molest and one count of aggravated molest, according to CNA.
Ten additional charges related to the same incidents were taken into consideration for sentencing.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Daphne Lim said the accused was 'clearly one who has no qualms violating young women for his sexual perversion'.
'Further, the offences committed by the accused against his tutees are difficult to detect and were committed by the accused in his capacity as a tutor, and as someone in a position of authority over them. Both specific and general deterrence comes to the fore,' Lim said.
His crimes were uncovered after he was caught engaging in indecent exposure in a public place.
Lee gave one-on-one mathematics and science tuition to primary and secondary school students in his home.
He disguised his actions by placing his hand on the back or shoulder of his students while committing the indecent acts.
The victims were unaware of Lee's actions, but a 15-year-old girl sensed something was wrong and felt uneasy about his close proximity.
She suspected the nature of his actions but hesitated to confront him, fearing she might be misinterpreting the situation due to her perception of him as religious.
She also feared that, being alone with him, he might escalate his actions.
The youngest victim, who was only 13 years old at the time he committed the offences, was unaware that he took videos of her.
In May 2019, Lee started to take videos of himself committing sexual acts in public behind or at a distance from unsuspecting women.
Lee was arrested on September 30, 2019, after a woman saw him exposing himself at a bus stop and alerted the police.
Police officers checked his mobile phone and discovered videos of Lee committing sexual acts, leading to his arrest.
During investigations, police officers raided his home and found at least 951 videos recorded by Lee, including 406 showing him exposing himself or making inappropriate physical contact with his students.
An additional 545 videos depicted Lee engaging in lewd acts in public.
Lim emphasised the need for public protection, highlighting the extensive number of incidents in which Lee had exposed himself in public while women were present.
'Taken together, the offences cumulatively show that the accused is a menace and a threat to the community. A lengthy sentence is called for to protect the community,' she added.
Lee's defence lawyer Joyce Khoo argued in mitigation that he had been diagnosed with multiple mental illnesses since 1997 and was suffering from exhibitionistic disorder at the time of the offenses.
She presented four medical reports from the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), dating back to 1997, to support her claim. Lee had been receiving treatment for adjustment disorder since 1997.
The prosecutor, however, said that the disorder was a 'nothing more than a psychiatric label to describe a perverse behaviour'.
The judge ruled that his condition did not impair his ability to exercise self-control and gave no mitigating weight to Lee's mental condition.
The court found that Lee had abused the trust of his students, who were vulnerable victims.
A gag order prohibits the publication of the victims' identities and the location of the offenses to protect their privacy.

Klang fatal shooting: ‘I thought it was a crow-shooting operation,' says witness after man found dead in pickup

KLANG, June 21 — The daily routine of the community in Taman Meru Utama came to a standstill when the peace was shattered by the sound of gunfire in front of a motorcycle shop that claimed the life of a local man yesterday (June 20). At the time of the incident, a retail shop owner, a woman who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that the shooting happened so quickly that it was difficult for the public to ascertain where several gunshots heard at about 3.20 pm, were coming from. 'I was tying flowers to make a garland when I heard an explosion like firecrackers, then I looked towards a motorcycle shop which was just 20 metres away and saw several individuals, including the motorcycle shop workers, running towards my store. 'I thought it was a crow-shooting operation but that hasn't been staged here for a long time since many trees have been cut down (where crows perch), ... then I realised someone has been shot and killed in a vehicle right in front of the motorcycle shop,' she told Bernama here today. The woman in her 50s also said that this was the first incident of its kind to occur near Taman Meru Utama in the five years she and her family have been running a grocery and food business. Yesterday, North Klang police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao confirmed that a 46-year-old local man had died from gunshot wounds in a four-wheel drive Ford Ranger pickup truck, with a post-mortem scheduled for 9 am today. When contacted today, Vijaya Rao said police were investigating possible secret society elements in the case. He said several individuals had so far been called in to have their statements recorded. 'Preliminary investigations found that the victim, who was self-employed, was accompanying his friend who wanted to buy a second-hand motorcycle at the shop. 'He was believed to have been shot at close range, and a post-mortem is still ongoing,' he said, adding that the police were also reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the surrounding area. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. — Bernama

SINGAPORE, June 21 — A 47-year-old man from Changi Airport Group's (CAG) Parade and Ceremony contingent died after collapsing during a National Day Parade (NDP) rehearsal at the Padang in Singapore today. According to a joint statement by the country's Ministry of Defence (Mindef) and CAG, the incident happened at 11.23am, shortly after the end of a component rehearsal. 'He was immediately evacuated to the on-site medical post and arrived at 11.26am, where he was attended by the duty medical officer. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered immediately,' the statement said. Despite efforts to revive him, the man remained unresponsive and was transferred to a standby Singapore Armed Forces ambulance at 11.42am. 'Resuscitation efforts continued en route to hospital,' Mindef and CAG added. He arrived at Singapore General Hospital at 11.57am and was pronounced dead at 12.19pm. The man was part of one of 18 civilian contingents preparing for the NDP on August 9, which will mark Singapore's 60th National Day. Mindef and CAG said they are in contact with the man's family. 'We extend our deepest condolences to the family,' they said.

Rare Irrawaddy dolphin dies in illegal ray net off Kuala Kedah, says MMEA

ALOR SETAR, June 21 — A rare Irrawaddy dolphin was found dead, tragically entangled in an illegal ray fishing net known locally as 'pukat pari' that was left behind by fishermen in the waters off Kuala Kedah yesterday. Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone director commander Noor Azreyanti Ishak said the dolphin, an endangered marine mammal, was found by a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) patrol team at about 11 am, approximately 1.1 nautical miles from the Kuala Kedah estuary. 'The discovery was made following the seizure of a RM2,000 ray net, which is prohibited under the Fisheries Act 1985 due to its non-selective nature. The net not only traps stingrays and juvenile fish but also poses a serious threat to protected marine species,' she said in a statement today. Noor Azreyanti said the Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), also known locally as 'empesut', is a unique species that is becoming increasingly rare in Southeast Asia, including in Malaysia. She added that the loss of even a single Irrawaddy dolphin has a major impact on the ecosystem, given its critically low population and elusive nature. Meanwhile, Noor Azreyanti said the latest seizure was the sixth involving ray nets in the Kuala Kedah maritime zone so far this year. 'The use of the nets not only affects the population of stingrays, which are benthic predators, but also disrupts the overall balance of the ecosystem if left unchecked,' she said. She also called on the public to report illegal fishing activities or suspicious activities at sea via the 999 emergency line or the Kuala Kedah maritime zone operations centre at 04-7310579. — Bernama
