Great Britain's most successful alpine ski racer Dave Ryding to retire
Dave Ryding, Great Britain's most successful alpine ski racer, will retire at the end of the 2025-26 season.
The 38-year-old made history in January 2022 by becoming the first British alpine skier to win World Cup gold thanks to victory in the Kitzbuhel slalom.
He hopes to compete at the fifth Winter Olympics of his career in February next year at the Milan-Cortina Games in Italy.
'Competing internationally, representing my country on the World Cup circuit, and going to four Olympic Games so far has been the privilege of a lifetime,' Ryding said in a statement.
'I've always said that I'd only carry on for as long as I think I can perform to my best level, and making this decision now frees me up to give one last push to try and go one step further over the next season.'
Lancashire-born Ryding has been a regular on the World Cup circuit since 2009 and achieved seven podium places, including his landmark gold.
The slalom specialist finished sixth in the 2025 Alpine World Championships – Britain's best men's result since 1934.
'It's been one hell of a journey, and I've loved every second of it,' he said. 'Now it's time to make this final season a special one.'

In her new book - titled 'On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women's Sports' - Brennan claims Clark rejected an offer to play for the 3x3 team 'well before June'. USA officials made the offer knowing there was still a qualifying event she could play in to become eligible for the Olympics, having never played on a national 3x3 team, she explains. Instead of playing 3x3 basketball, Clark used the WNBA's mid-season break during the Olympics to recharge her batteries ahead of the second half of her rookie year. After being snubbed for a place on the main roster, she said in June 2024: 'I'm excited for the girls that are on the team. I know it's the most competitive team in the world and I know it could've gone either way, me being on the team or me not being on the team. 'I'm excited for them, gonna be rooting them on to win gold. I was a kid that grew up watching the Olympics, it'll be fun to watch them. 'Honestly, no disappointment. I think it just gives you something to work for. It's a dream, hopefully one day I can be there. I think it's just a little bit more motivation. You remember that and hopefully when four years comes back around, I can be there.' Clark also revealed that she was already aware she hadn't been picked before the news broke. 'They called me and let me know before everything came out, which was really respectful of them and I appreciated that,' she continued. 'They did the same for every girl that made the team or every girl that didn't make the team. There's a lot of players in the Olympic pool, so it wasn't like I was the only one they had to call. They had to make quite a few calls.' PWHL Vancouver names Brian Idalski as first coach
June 23 - PWHL Vancouver named Brian Idalski as the expansion club's first head coach on Monday. Idalski, 54, spent the past three seasons as head coach of the St. Cloud State women's hockey program. "Brian is a proven winner who knows our sport, the players, and has coached at the highest levels," general manager Cara Gardner Morey said. "What stands out in Brian's experience is his ability to build and transform the programs he is a part of, from his work in professional leagues, at the Olympics, and turning collegiate teams into nationally ranked contenders. I'm excited that he will lead our incredible group in Vancouver and can't wait to see his vision and influence shape our foundation." He previously led the collegiate programs at Wisconsin-Stevens Point (2001-06) and North Dakota (2007-17) before serving as head coach of the Chinese professional team Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays from 2019-22. Idalski also coached the Chinese women's national team at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. "I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to join an organization and city like Vancouver and want to thank Cara and the league for their trust and belief in me," Idalski said.
