Bullying in schools may be reported to PNP's 911 hotline, says Torre

Cases of bullying in schools may be reported via the Philippine National Police's 911 hotline, PNP chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said on Monday.
According to Mark Makalalad's report on Super Radyo dzBB, Torre ordered police commanders to be on the lookout for street crimes and bullying as classes resumed across the country.
Torre said incidents of bullying may be reported to the 911 hotline, and the local police station with jurisdiction shall get in touch with school authorities.
"We are coordinating with the schools. Sisiguraduhin natin na walang bullying," Torre told reporters.
Torre said police units have also been ordered to look after school children, who may fall victim to robbers or con artists who might take their valuables, such as cellphones.
Schools across the country reopened on Monday, June 16, marking the official start of School Year 2025–2026 with the Department of Education (DepEd) expecting around 27 million enrollees from preschool to senior high school.
"All systems go po ang lahat sa pagbubukas ng ating klase," DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said in a Viber message.

As millions of students trooped back to classrooms, the country's education system continues to grapple with long-standing challenges, including learning gaps, infrastructure backlogs, and overcrowded facilities.
One of the most urgent problems remains the massive shortage of classrooms, with the backlog now at 165,000 nationwide. Education officials earlier admitted that, at the current rate of construction, it could take up to 55 years to eliminate the backlog. –NB, GMA Integrated News

Sara Duterte's office receives Ombudsman order on confi funds raps
The Office of the Vice President (OVP) on Friday confirmed receipt of the order issued by the Office of the Ombudsman in relation to the alleged misuse of confidential funds by Vice President Sara Duterte and nine other officials. The OVP said it received the order at about 9 a.m. Friday, June 20. The Ombudsman has given Duterte and the other respondents ten days from receipt of the order to file their counter-affidavits "together with the affidavit/s of their witness/es, and other supporting documents." The order, which was issued Thursday, came after the House of Representatives filed a complaint against Duterte and several others for plunder, technical malversation, falsification, use of falsified documents, perjury, bribery, corruption of public officers, betrayal of public trust, and culpable violation of the Constitution, a source told GMA Integrated News. The complaint stemmed from the recommendation of the House Committee on Good Governance and Public Accountability to file charges against Duterte for the alleged misuse of P500 million in confidential funds of the OVP, and P112.5 million in confidential funds of DepEd from 2022 to 2024. Earlier on Friday, the OVP said Duterte would be traveling to Australia for a personal trip and to join a June 22 protest action in Melbourne calling for the release of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte. Aside from Duterte, the other respondents in the Ombudsman's order are: OVP Atty. Zuleika Lopez, Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Lemuel Ortonio, Assistant Secretary Assistant Chief of Staff Lieutenant Colonel Dennis Nolasco, Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group Colonel Raymund Dante Lachia, Commander, Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group, Philippine Army DepEd Edward Fajarda, Special Disbursing Officer Gina Acosta, Special Disbursing Officer Assistant Secretary Atty. DA, PNP boost anti-smuggling campaign
The Department of Agriculture (DA) is intensifying its anti-smuggling campaign after discovering the sale of suspected smuggled onions in Paco Market in Manila. On Wednesday, Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. said the DA will partner with the Philippine National Police (PNP) for the crackdown against smuggled agricultural products they discovered smuggled onions being sold in the market. The imported red onions are larger and cleaner than local varieties. It also surfaced in markets despite the absence of import permits, he added. 'We did not give any permits to anybody since early this year. Lahat ng imported onions sa lahat ng palengke ay smuggled iyan,' said Laurel Jr. 'It's the directive of President Bongbong Marcos to stop smuggling—that's why we now have this law,' he said. The DA will conduct lab testing of seized onions to ensure they are not a public health threat. Previous inspections found traces of E. coli and heavy metals in smuggled white onions. 'But of course, our target remains the so-called 'big fish.' We will raid warehouses with the help of the PNP,' said Tiu Laurel. Meanwhile, the DA said they are also eyeing to train police officers to distinguish between locally produced and imported agricultural products, including pork, as part of efforts to strengthen the government's anti-smuggling campaign.
