Chip equipment stocks fall after US plans to revoke China waivers
-- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) stock fell 2%, Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) shares tumbled 5%, and Applied Materials (NASDAQ:AMAT) dropped 4% following reports that a U.S. official plans to revoke technology waivers for chipmakers operating in China. Jeffrey Kessler, who leads the export controls unit at the Commerce Department, has informed major semiconductor manufacturers including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Samsung Electronics (KS:005930), and SK Hynix of his intention to cancel blanket waivers that currently allow them to ship American chip-making equipment to their factories in China without applying for separate licenses each time, according to the Wall Street Journal. The potential policy change is reportedly part of the Trump administration's broader efforts to restrict critical U.S. technology from going to China. If implemented, the move could create significant disruption both diplomatically and economically, coming shortly after the U.S. and China established a trade truce in London. White House officials have stated that this action would not represent a new trade escalation but would instead align the licensing system for chip equipment with China's existing system for rare-earth materials. They added that the U.S. and China continue to make progress on completing their London agreement. "Chip makers will still be able to operate in China. The new enforcement mechanisms on chips mirror licensing requirements that apply to other semiconductor companies that export to China and ensure the United States has an equal and reciprocal process," a Commerce Department spokesman said. The semiconductor equipment sector is particularly vulnerable to changes in U.S.-China trade policy, as many companies rely on access to the Chinese market for significant portions of their revenue. Why GMS (GMS) Stock Is Up Today
Shares of building materials distributor GMS (NYSE:GMS) jumped 26.2% in the afternoon session after Home Depot joined QXO in a bidding war to acquire the company. This came right after QXO made a proposal of $95.20 per share for GMS, valuing it at approximately $5 billion and representing a substantial premium. The competitive acquisition scenario, with two major players vying for GMS, drove investor optimism about a potentially higher final sale price. Wall Street expressed optimism about the deal, with Truist analysts highlighting Home Depot's potential to pay more than QXO, given its history of "one and done" offers. Overall, this can be considered a positive development for GMS's shareholders, given the improved possibility of exiting their position at a significantly higher price. Is now the time to buy GMS? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. GMS's shares are not very volatile and have only had 7 moves greater than 5% over the last year. Moves this big are rare for GMS and indicate this news significantly impacted the market's perception of the business. The previous big move we wrote about was 2 days ago when the stock gained 12.8% on the news that the company reported strong first quarter 2025 results which beat Wall Street's sales, operating income, and earnings per share estimates. The results were encouraging even as management noted, "ongoing challenging interest rate environment and general market uncertainty continues to be a headwind for the business, contributing to reduced levels of activity in each of our major end markets." Despite this, the business recorded volume growth in Ceilings and Complementary Products, with improved pricing in all major product categories except for Steel Framing, suggesting the softness might be temporary. Also, the company reiterated the focus on driving shareholder value as it continued to optimize costs, repurchase shares, and invest in new businesses to drive growth. Overall, this was an encouraging result amid broader market challenges. GMS is up 20.9% since the beginning of the year, and at $101.88 per share, it is trading close to its 52-week high of $103.84 from November 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of GMS's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $4,443. Unless you've been living under a rock, it should be obvious by now that generative AI is going to have a huge impact on how large corporations do business. Why GXO Logistics (GXO) Stock Is Up Today
Shares of contract logistics company GXO (NYSE:GXO) jumped 11.3% in the afternoon session after the company provided impressive preliminary financial forecasts and raised its full-year 2025 guidance for organic revenue growth, adjusted EBITDA, and adjusted diluted EPS. This upward revision reflects better-than-expected performance (volumes and accelerated productivity gains) and anticipated gains from the Wincanton acquisition. GXO confirmed that the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) cleared its acquisition of Wincanton, a major UK logistics company, subject to the condition of divesting a small number of grocery contracts. This regulatory clearance removes a key hurdle for the acquisition, allowing integration to begin in Q3 2025. Lastly, the company announced the appointment of seasoned supply chain leader Patrick Kelleher as its new chief executive officer, effective August 19, 2025. Kelleher has 33 years of global supply chain experience, having held senior executive roles at DHL Supply Chain, a division of Deutsche Post DHL Group. Most recently, he served as CEO of DHL North America, where he led significant growth and operational enhancements across the business. These updates suggest a clearer path for GXO in the eyes of investors, which is spurring buying of the stock. If it's one thing the markets shy from, it's uncertainty. Is now the time to buy GXO Logistics? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. GXO Logistics's shares are somewhat volatile and have had 13 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for GXO Logistics and indicate this news significantly impacted the market's perception of the business. The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 4 months ago when the stock dropped 15.8% on the news that the company reported weak fourth quarter results. Its full-year EPS and EBITDA guidance fell short of Wall Street's estimates. In addition, while GXO Logistics narrowly topped analysts' revenue expectations this quarter, its organic revenue missed. Overall, this was a weaker quarter. GXO Logistics is up 10.6% since the beginning of the year, but at $47.58 per share, it is still trading 24.5% below its 52-week high of $63.01 from October 2024. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of GXO Logistics's shares at the IPO in July 2021 would now be looking at an investment worth $874.40.
