Chris Waller gives hobby trainer reason to believe he can complete Stradbroke fairytale

The Australian04-06-2025

As he counts down the days to a fairytale crack at the 2025 Stradbroke Handicap, larrikin Brisbane hobby trainer Craig Cousins has the words of Chris Waller ringing in his ears.
It will be a David versus Goliath battle in the Stradbroke as 60-year-old Cousins, who only has three horses in work, takes on some of racing's biggest names.
Cousins knows he has a good horse and a good Stradbroke chance with home-bred hero The Inflictor, who is a $15 chance in Queensland's most prestigious race on Saturday week.

The Inflictor qualified for the Stradbroke by scoring a golden ticket when winning The Gateway at Eagle Farm and he rubber-stamped his claims by scoring at Doomben last month with Nash Rawiller in the saddle.
Enter Waller, who has infused Cousins with extra confidence and belief heading into the $3m Stradbroke.
• Benagil still Oaks benchmark 'if she brings her A-game'
'I had never met Chris Waller before, I had just seen him from a distance and that was about it,' Cousins said.
'He's obviously a master at what he does.
'I was walking around after the race the other day and I heard someone yelling, 'Craig, Craig'.
'I recognised the voice and it was Chris Waller. He shook my hand and congratulated me.
'Chris said, 'this is what racing is about, this is a great story'. He said he wished me all the best for the Stradbroke.
'I told Chris he would probably have a good Stradbroke horse himself.
'He said, 'don't worry about mine Craig, yours is a genuine chance'.'
Four-year-old The Inflictor has won $499,000 in prizemoney and will add another $1.8m to that haul if he scores the Group 1 Stradbroke at Eagle Farm.
It would be one of the greatest stories in Stradbroke history.

Cousins juggles his day job as a truck driver with his work training horses but will put the handbrakes on the truck driving job next week so he can enjoy Stradbroke week.
He has even bought himself a new suit for Stradbroke week and several new ties.
He plans to lap up the week and go to Breakfast With The Stars at Eagle Farm on Tuesday as well as the barrier draw function at The Star on Tuesday night.
'Life wouldn't change too much if I won the Stradbroke, but it would be a bloody good feeling,' Cousins said.
'My horse's win the other day was really impressive, I didn't realise how impressive it was until I watched a replay later.
'I can only have three horses at the one time, if I have any more it's too hard doing it one-out.
'I do get an occasional hand off different friends, but most of the time it's just me.
'This horse will have a red-hot go in the Stradbroke.'

Consumer watchdog ACCC approves Australia Post stamp price hike

The price of Australia Post stamps will be hiked next month following approval from the country's consumer watchdog. A stamp for a basic small letter will increase from $1.50 to $1.70, which the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says is still less than in comparable countries. Across the board, prices are going up a little over 13 per cent. 'We are especially mindful of the impact price changes can have on vulnerable Australians and so our decision paper recommends that Australia Post increases the number of concession stamps per customer, which is currently capped at 50 per year,' ACCC commissioner Anna Brakey said. 'We understand that these price increases will mean extra costs for consumers,' she said. However, Australia Post loses money running the national letter service, Ms Brakey said. Following the ACCC's approval, announced Monday, Communications Minister Anika Wells can still reject the price increase. NewsWire has contacted the Minister's office for comment. Fewer and fewer Australians send and receive letters. In submissions made to the ACCC, Australia Post says each household receives only two letters each week. But the ACCC wants Australia Post to work out ways to make letters cheaper for businesses that are required to send them. 'As there are many businesses in Australia that still rely on sending letters, it is crucial that Australia Post has a transparent dialogue with these customers so they are aware of potential pricing changes well ahead of time,' Ms Brakey said. 'While Australia Post has been working constructively with the ACCC on these recommendations, in most instances, we expect full implementation to be reached, so that we can conduct rigorous cost-based assessments going forward,' Ms Brakey said. The average price of a single postage stamp in OECD countries is $1.93. From next month, large letters up to 125g will increase from $3.00 to $3.40. Ordinary large letters between 125g and 250g are going up from $4.50 to $5.10. Concession stamps will remain $3 for five stamps, and seasonal greeting cards are staying at 65c.

NBA world says same thing about Josh Giddey after OKC Thunder championship

Josh Giddey has sent a message of total class after watching his former Oklahoma City Thunder teammates win the NBA Championship in euphoric scenes on Monday (AEST). In the first NBA Finals Game 7 since 2016, the Thunder took advantage of a heartbreaking serious injury to Indiana franchise star Tyrese Haliburton to win the decider 103-91 on their home court. It must have been a rollercoaster of emotions for Giddey, watching his former team go all the way just 12 months after he was shipped off to the Chicago Bulls. Giddey has thrived since joining the Bulls and is reportedly set to sign a staggering $46 million per-year deal with the iconic franchise. However, that all seems somewhat insignificant when watching his former team take the league by storm this season. Giddey shared an Instagram story with a photo of OKC's triumph, writing: 'Congrats to the guys' with three love hearts. It was all class from the Aussie point guard, who also shared his heartbreak at Haliburton's Achilles injury in the first quarter that proved a cruel blow for the Indiana Pacers. HaliðŸ˜'ðŸ˜'ðŸ˜'ðŸ˜' — josh giddey (@joshgiddey) June 23, 2025 The man OKC replaced Giddey with, Alex Caruso, turned out to be a pivotal piece in the Thunder's championship puzzle. The 31-year-old, who one of the league's best defender's in 2023 and 2024, was sent to OKC by the Bulls in a straight swap for Giddey. Caruso had the third most steals in NBA Finals history as he won his second NBA championship following his 2020 title with the Los Angeles Lakers. OKC Thunder general manager Sam Presti paid tribute to OKC's entire squad including Caruso, who at 31 years of age is by far the oldest player in the Thunder's rotation. 'Age is a number,' an emotional Presti said about his young squad that shapes as the NBA's next dynasty. 'Sacrifice and maturity is a characteristic and these guys have it in spades. It's a privilege to work with these guys. 'These guys represent at that is good at a young age. They prioritise winning, they prioritise sacrifice. This just unfolded very quickly. Last offseason, Presti recruited Caruso and centre Isaiah Hartenstein, bringing in players to bolster the Thunder's three-point shooting, defence and rebounding. The Thunder winning the title a year after his departure would be a tough pill to swallow for Giddey, and it seems everyone is saying the same thing about the 22-year-old point guard. One American sports writer posted on X: 'Josh Giddey has to be sick right now'. The Thunder traded Josh Giddey for Alex Caruso and won a championship The Bulls traded Josh Giddey for Alex Caruso and now get the right to pay him 30 million dollars a year It’s ok to like Josh Giddey and still admit the Bulls lost that transaction — Justin Talks Hoops (@J_Talks_Hoops) June 23, 2025 The Hartenstein and Caruso acquisitions are both all-time moves from Sam Presti. Addressed clear needs on the roster + added a veteran presence to a young group. — Esfandiar Baraheni (@JustEsBaraheni) June 23, 2025 Australian basketball legend Luc Longley, who won three championships with Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, is backing Giddey to bounce back from getting traded. 'I don't feel a single bit sorry for Josh,' Longley told recently. Andrew Bogut, who won an NBA title with the Golden State Warriors, said the brutal nature of Giddey's benching by the Thunder in last season's playoffs would sting. 'I mean he essentially got benched and was somewhat told that 'we can't win with him in the line-up',' Bogut told 'He's been on record saying he'd rather it happened now than in year seven, eight, nine, ten — and work out the kinks at an earlier age. 'But to some young guys that could derail you, that could mentally screw you.' Giddey became a near triple double machine in the back-end of the NBA regular season and the Bulls are expected to re-sign him as they are urged to lean into a rebuilding around a young core. 'He's bounced back even better for it and now you know second half of the year for him was phenomenal,' Bogut said. 'Chicago's gonna have to have to pay him, I think. I don't think they have any choice with the way the (salary) cap is.' Longley added: ''With Josh, I hope that they build the right pieces with him and around him. And I do believe in his appetite for it. 'I think he is supremely motivated by things more than money. He is deeply competitive.' Meanwhile, Alex Ducas, who is on a two-way contract with the Thunder, has now become just the eighth Australian to win an NBA championship and is likely to be awarded with a championship ring by team officials as a member of the support staff.
