Dream face Mystics again, look to back up 33-point rout
June 19 - Meeting for the second time in a week, the Atlanta Dream will look for similar success against the visiting Washington Mystics on Friday in College Park, Ga.
Atlanta (8-4) delivered a crushing 89-56 victory at Washington on Sunday before seeing its three-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday in an 86-81 road setback against the New York Liberty.
The Dream took an eight-point lead into the final quarter against the Eastern Conference-best Liberty before being outscored 26-13 over the last 10 minutes.
"I'm proud of the way our team played and executed, especially for the first three quarters," Atlanta coach Karl Smesko said. "Got to give New York credit, they kept coming, they got the momentum, and we weren't able to hold them off.
"For us, when you're playing a championship-level team on the road, you're not just trying to hold on, you've got to go at them and win the game. That's going to be a good learning experience for us."
Coming off a career-high 32 points in the win against Washington, Allisha Gray was held to 14 in the loss, while reserve Te-Hina PaoPao led the way with a season-high 16 points. Gray leads the team -- and ranks sixth in the WNBA -- with 20.4 points per game, while Atlanta's Rhyne Howard averages 17.3.
Washington (5-7) rebounded from its lopsided loss to Atlanta with a 79-72 road win over the Chicago Sky on Tuesday.
After trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half, Washington outscored Chicago 47-28 after halftime. Brittney Sykes scored 20 points in the second half and 32 in the game, the most by a Mystics player this season.
Washington will aim for consecutive wins for the first time since the first two games of the season, which included a 94-90 victory over Atlanta in the season opener. The Mystics also will look to avenge their worst loss since September 2021, when they lost by 34 points to the Seattle Storm.
"There were a few moments here or there when we might not have played as hard as I'd like," Washington coach Sydney Johnson said of the loss on Sunday to Atlanta. "We just couldn't create our own luck and ran into a really good offensive team."
Sykes leads the Mystics with 20.5 points per game, followed by rookies Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen, who each add 13.3 points.

The revelation that Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders had been caught speeding by police in the city didn't come as a surprise to law enforcement. Yesterday, it was revealed that Sanders was pulled over in the suburb of Strongsville on Tuesday by authorities who issued a citation. The rookie quarterback out of Colorado was clocked driving at 101mph, 41 miles over the posted speed limit. Nearly a day later, it's been revealed that this is the second time this month that Sanders has been stopped for reckless driving. Back on June 6, Sanders was stopped in another Cleveland suburb - Brunswick Hills - by the Ohio State Patrol. According to records, Sanders was pulled over for driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone at 12:24 in the morning. A spokesperson for the team told that the team has addressed the citations with the rookie. "He is taking care of the tickets," team spokesman Peter John-Baptiste told the media outlet. For the June 6 incident, Sanders faces $269 in fines and court costs for his recklessness. As for the most recent ticket, he has the choice of either paying the $250 fine or fighting the fourth-degree misdemeanor charge in court on July 3. Sanders was tipped by many - his own father included - to be a top-five draft pick. But the former Colorado quarterback suffered one the most shocking slides in NFL history. He was eventually selected by Cleveland in the fifth round with the 144th overall pick - not before the Browns had taken ex-Oregon star Dillon Gabriel.

June 19 - Trent Grisham and Paul Goldschmidt hit back-to-back home runs as the host New York Yankees stopped a season-high six-game losing streak with a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday afternoon. Carlos Rodon (9-5) overcame allowing three solo homers and pitched six quality innings as the Yankees avoided losing seven straight for the first time since a nine-game slide from Aug. 12-22, 2023. It also halted New York's five-game home losing streak. The teams played through an eight-minute rain delay after the Angels batted in the second and 35-minute stoppage in the eighth. The Yankees' offense exceeded their run total from their six-game slide (six). Grisham and Goldschmidt went deep in the second inning off Tyler Anderson (2-5) to make it 4-2 after Giancarlo Stanton had an RBI groundout in the first. Cody Bellinger collected three hits with an RBI single in the seventh for a 5-3 lead as the Yankees finished with 12 hits. Anthony Volpe added an RBI groundout and Austin Wells lifted a sacrifice fly following the second delay. Rodon allowed solo homers to Mike Trout, Jo Adell and Taylor Ward but held the Angels to four hits and improved to 8-2 in his past 12 starts.
