New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested at an immigration court on Tuesday, the latest U.S. politician to be swept up in President Donald Trump's immigration raids.
Lander, who is among 11 Democratic candidates seeking to replace current Mayor Eric Adams, was shown in a video posted to his personal account on X being placed in handcuffs and led into an elevator by men in plainclothes, backward baseball caps and surgical masks. One man wore a vest that said "police federal agent."
A post accompanying the video attributed to Lander's wife said he had been escorting a defendant out of immigration court when he was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
"I'm not obstructing, I'm standing right here in the hallway. I asked to see the judicial warrant," Lander says in the video. "You don't have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens asking for judicial warrants."
Representatives for Lander's campaign, in a statement echoing the post on X, said the situation was "still developing" and that they were monitoring it closely.
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Lander was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer.
"It is wrong that politicians seeking higher office undermine law enforcement safety to get a viral moment. No one is above the law, and if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will face consequences," she said.
Representatives for the campaign could not be immediately reached for comment on the statement from DHS, which oversees ICE.
In Los Angeles, Democratic U.S. Senator Alex Padilla was forced to the ground and handcuffed by security last week after trying to ask DHS Secretary Kristi Noem a question about the Trump administration's immigration raids.
Padilla said in remarks on the Senate floor on Tuesday that had he had been "pushed and pulled" and was "forced to the ground first on my knees and then flat on my chest."
The DHS said at the time that Padilla had engaged in "disrespectful political theater".
ICE raids triggered protests in Los Angeles this month, prompting Trump to send National Guard troops and U.S. Marines into the city, against the wishes of California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.
The Trump administration has also charged Democratic U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver over a scuffle at the gate of a privately run immigration detention center on May 9 as lawmakers sought to conduct an oversight visit.
It also arrested Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a Democrat now running for New Jersey governor, though it later dropped the case. Baraka has filed a lawsuit over the incident.
Lander, who as comptroller oversees New York City's budget, cited his visits to immigration courts during a recent debate.
Adams is seeking re-election as an independent after leaving the Democratic Party, and has backed Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. The Justice Department dismissed corruption charges against the mayor, saying the case was distracting him from helping Trump step up deportations. —Reuters

DFA: No info yet if Pinoys affected in US airstrikes vs Iranian nuclear sites

A view of the cityscape in the aftermath of Israeli strikes, in Tehran, Iran, June 16, 2025. Majid Asgaripour/WANA (West Asia News Agency) via REUTERS The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said they have no information if Filipinos were affected after United States forces attacked three nuclear sites in Iran, Assistant Secretary Robert Ferrer said Sunday. 'Wala pa tayong impormasyon kung may mga Pilipino dun sa mga binombang pasilidad sa Iran, but we already told our kababayans to stay away from Iranian facilities,' Ferrer told Super Radyo dzBB. (We don't have any information if there were Filipinos who were affected in the facilities that were bombed in Iran, but we already told our countrymen to stay away from Iranian facilities.) Earlier today, US President Donald Trump announced the "very successful attack" of its forces in Iran, adding that the crown jewel of Tehran's nuclear program, Fordow, is gone. Ferrer said there are 1,200 Filipinos in Iran, of whom nine have requested repatriation. 'It's very hard to move from Tehran to Turkmenistan border. It's a 13-hour drive. I think in the next few days, they will be able to do ti with God's help,' Ferrer said, noting that the Philippine Embassy in Tehran is working on the repatriation. Meanwhile, Ferrer said personnel of the Philippine Embassy in Tehran will be the last to leave the Islamic Republic and only after Filipinos wishing to return to the Philippines are taken cared of. Pinoys in Israel Ferrer also said 223 Filipinos in Israel have requested repatriation, of which 26 are leaving soon. There are about 30,000 Filipinos in the Jewish state, according to Ferrer. 'Hindi pa rin bukas ang airports (airports are still closed). The seaports are also closed. Open naman ang land border with Jordan (the border to Jordan is open). They can cross, but they have to do it through the embassy in Tel Aviv,' the official said. One Filipino remains in critical condition, while seven have been discharged from the hospital. The houses of 88 Filipinos have been damaged due to Iranian airstrikes and 80 have been resettled to safer areas. On Friday, crisis alert level 3 in Israel and Iran was raised by the Philippine government, urging Filipinos in the area to avail of voluntary repatriation as tensions continue between the two countries.

World leaders react to US attack on Iran

The reaction of world leaders after US forces struck three Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday Iran time ranged from Israel lauding President Donald Trump's decision to the UN calling for de-escalation and some countries condemning the attacks. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, recorded statement "Congratulations, President Trump. Your bold decision to target Iran's nuclear facilities with the awesome and righteous might of the United States will change history... History will record that President Trump acted to deny the world's most dangerous regime the world's most dangerous weapons." UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, statement "I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security. There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world. I call on Member States to de-escalate and to uphold their obligations under the UN Charter and other rules of international law. At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos. There is no military solution. The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace." Venezuela Foreign Minister Yvan Gil, on Telegram "Venezuela Condemns U.S. Military Aggression Against Iran and Demands an Immediate Cessation of Hostilities. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela firmly and categorically condemns the bombing carried out by the United States military, at the request of the State of Israel, against nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan complexes." Mexico Foreign Ministry, on X "The ministry urgently calls for diplomatic dialogue for peace between the parties involved in the Middle East conflict. In keeping with our constitutional principles of foreign policy and our country's pacifist conviction, we reiterate our call to de-escalate tensions in the region. The restoration of peaceful coexistence among the states of the region is the highest priority." Cuba President Miguel Diaz-Canel, on X "We strongly condemn the US bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities, which constitutes a dangerous escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. The aggression seriously violates the UN Charter and international law and plunges humanity into a crisis with irreversible consequences." —Reuters

FACTBOX: US B-2 bombers, bunker-busters and alternatives

A B-2 Spirit stealth bomber takes off at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, April 30, 2025. US Air Force/Staff Sgt. Joshua Hastings/Handout via REUTERS/File photo WASHINGTON - The US Air Force's B-2 Spirit stealth bombers were involved in strikes on Iran's nuclear sites on Saturday. Three Iranian nuclear sites were struck in a "very successful attack," President Donald Trump said on Saturday, adding that the crown jewel of Tehran's nuclear program, Fordow, is gone. The B-2 is one of America's most advanced strategic weapons platforms, capable of entering sophisticated air defenses and delivering precision strikes against hardened targets such as Iran's buried network of nuclear research facilities. B-2 Spirit specifications The US B-2 costs about $2.1 billion each, making it the most expensive military aircraft ever built. Made by Northrop Grumma, the bomber, with its cutting-edge stealth technology, began its production run in the late 1980s but was curbed by the fall of the Soviet Union. Only 21 were made after the Pentagon's planned acquisition program was truncated. The bomber's range of over 6,000 nautical miles (11,112 km) without refueling enables global strike capabilities from continental US bases. With aerial refueling, the B-2 can reach virtually any target worldwide, as demonstrated in missions from Missouri to Afghanistan and Libya and now Iran. Its payload capacity of more than 40,000 pounds (18,144 kg) allows the aircraft to carry a diverse array of conventional and nuclear weapons. The bomber's internal weapons bays are specifically designed to maintain stealth characteristics while accommodating large ordnance loads which could include two GBU-57A/B MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator), a 30,000-pound precision-guided "bunker buster" bomb. Reports said six bunker buster bombs were used on Iran's Fordow research site. The B-2's two-pilot crew configuration reduces personnel requirements while maintaining operational effectiveness through advanced automation systems. The B-2's stealth technology incorporates radar-absorbing materials and angular design features that minimize detection by enemy air defense systems. Its radar cross-section is reportedly comparable to that of a small bird, making it nearly invisible to conventional radar. Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) The 30,000-pound MOP represents the largest conventional bomb in the US arsenal, specifically engineered to defeat hardened underground bunkers. Its massive size requires the B-2 to carry only one or two MOPs per mission, but provides unmatched bunker-penetration capability. The weapon's 20.5-foot (6.25-m) length and GPS-guided precision targeting system enable accurate strikes against specific underground facilities. Its penetration capability of over 200 feet through hardened concrete makes it effective against the world's most protected underground installations. Conventional payloads Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) provide the B-2 with precision conventional strike capability against fixed targets. These GPS-guided weapons can be deployed in large numbers, with the bomber capable of simultaneously engaging multiple targets with high accuracy. Joint Standoff Weapons (JSOW) extend the aircraft's engagement range while maintaining stealth characteristics during approach. These glide bombs allow the B-2 to strike targets from outside heavily defended airspace perimeters. Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM) offer long-range precision strike capability with their own stealth features. The extended-range JASSM-ER variant provides strike options against targets over 500 miles (805 km) away. Nuclear payload capabilities The B-2 Spirit serves as a key component of America's nuclear triad, capable of delivering strategic nuclear weapons with stealth and precision. The aircraft can carry up to 16 B83 nuclear bombs. —Reuters
