Suspect charged after driving through busy shopping centre to evade police
A man has been charged after allegedly driving a stolen Toyota Land Cruiser through a popular shopping centre to evade police.
The 27-year-old man was arrested at 8.30am on June 19 after investigators tracked him to a home on Hoddle Street in Melbourne's inner east.
At 4pm on June 18, security at Northland shopping centre, in Preston, Melbourne, alerted police to an allegedly stolen four-wheel-drive in the car park.
Police were at the car park within five minutes and attempted to block the car in, but the 27-year-old driver allegedly evaded officers by smashing through the middle of the shopping centre.
"It is understood the driver had been shopping inside the centre before returning to the vehicle," police said.
No one was physically injured or struck by the Land Cruiser, but one woman was treated for shock at the scene.
Officers did not fire their weapons at any stage of the pursuit, Victoria Police said.
The Land Cruiser was recovered from Beavers Road in Northcote after it was allegedly dumped by the driver.
Police believe the car was stolen from a home on King Street in Ivanhoe East on June 2.
"It is believed an electronic key reprogramming tool was used to steal the Land Cruiser without the vehicle's keys," police said.
An electronic key reprogramming tool was seized from the Hoddle Street home during the arrest, police said.
The man was charged with two counts of aggravated and intentional exposure of a police officer to risk by driving, reckless conduct endangering life, theft of a motor vehicle, handling stolen goods, driving whilst disqualified and criminal damage.
Anyone with footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Major question looms over investigation into ‘suspicious' death of Melbourne woman
How a woman reported missing came to suffer injuries consistent with a serious assault before she died in hospital is the subject of a police probe, with her death being treated as 'suspicious'. A woman in her 60s was reported missing by her neighbour on June 14, just a week after the neighbour had seen her with an unknown man outside her Noble Park home in Melbourne's southeast. The neighbour hadn't been able to contact her since spotting her with the man on June 7. The woman was found at Dandenong Hospital on June 16, with a Victoria Police spokesperson revealing she had injuries that appeared consistent with being seriously assaulted. Police were able to speak with the woman before she died in hospital days later on June 20. Her death is being treated as suspicious: the homicide squad have been called in to investigate. 'The exact circumstances surrounding the incident which led to her being injured are still being determined,' a Victoria Police spokesperson said. 'However detectives from the Homicide Squad are investigating and her death is being treated as suspicious.' Police have spoken to a 62-year-old Endeavour Hills man, who was known to the woman, regarding the incident, but he was released pending further inquiries. The woman's next of kin have not yet been notified of her death.

Footscray man dies after alleged assault by released immigration detainee
A 62-year-old man has died in hospital from injuries he sustained after an alleged serious assault in Melbourne's inner west last weekend. The man was taken to hospital and placed on life support after he was allegedly assaulted at the intersection of Nicholson and Paisley streets in Footscray on Sunday morning. Police arrested Friday Yokoju after the assault, charging him with intentionally causing serious injury. A Victoria Police spokesperson said investigators would now consider alternate charges following the man's death. The ABC understands the 43-year-old was released from immigration detention after a 2023 High Court ruling sometimes referred to as NZYQ. The court set aside an earlier judgement that ruled indefinite immigration was lawful, which triggered the release of about 140 detainees, including Mr Yokoju. Mr Yokoju had been remanded in custody after an initial court hearing on Monday over the assault, where his lawyer requested an urgent psychiatric assessment. He had previously remained in the community on a bridging visa while the Department of Home Affairs worked on his deportation. He is next expected to face the Melbourne Magistrates' Court in October.

Wild moments before man allegedly drove stolen car through shopping centre
Dramatic new vision has emerged of the crash-and-bash moments before a man allegedly drove a stolen four-wheel-drive through a shopping centre to escape police. Footage filmed at Melbourne 's Northland Shopping Centre carpark on Wednesday afternoon showed a Toyota LandCruiser reversing into an unmarked police car that was boxing it in before taking out a bollard near where a pedestrian was walking. The patrol vehicle can be seen taking the impact before the driver is told, 'get the f*** out of the car now'. Instead, it is alleged the driver 'took evasive action to avoid police and drove through the middle of the shopping centre'. Crowds of shoppers scrambled to safety but no one was injured in the chaos. A 27-year-old East Melbourne man was arrested on Thursday morning. He has since been charged with several offences including reckless conduct endangering life, theft, driving while disqualified, and criminal damage. The same shopping centre was evacuated the next morning due to smoke from a faulty light. Northland shopping centre was also locked down last month .
