Minister Na'im files defamation suit against lecturer
Religious affairs minister Na'im Mokhtar claimed that on Feb 5 and May 4, lecturer Abu Hafiz Salleh Hudin had published and reposted defamatory, malicious and untrue statements on the latter's X account.
PETALING JAYA : Religious affairs minister Na'im Mokhtar has filed a defamation suit against a public university lecturer over alleged defamatory statements posted on social media.
Harian Metro reported that Na'im named Abu Hafiz Salleh Hudin as the defendant in the lawsuit filed at the Shah Alam High Court via Messrs Akberdin & Co on June 14.
The lawsuit relates to defamatory statements allegedly posted by Abu Hafiz on X and Facebook.
In the statement of claim, Na'im said the defendant had shown a consistent pattern in his various public statements since the end of 2024, whether via posts on X or Facebook, or statements published by news portals.
He said the statements had directly or indirectly touched on and attacked him in an unfair and excessive manner.
Na'im claimed that on Feb 5 and May 4, Abu Hafiz had published and reposted defamatory, malicious and untrue statements on the latter's X account.
He said the statements implied he was an arrogant, hard-headed and conceited leader who rejected advice and was unwilling to accept other views in matters related to religion.
Na'im also said the statements implied he had failed to effectively carry out his duties, even in simple matters, causing the government's policies and initiatives to become a laughing stock and rejected by a number of MPs.
Na'im said the statements also implied that he was an elitist and considered himself superior to other officials, and that he acted contrary to the principles of Islamic leadership.
'It is beyond doubt that the defendant harboured malicious intent towards me. It is also clear that the defendant intended to cause disharmony in society by defaming me,' he said.
Na'im is seeking general, aggravated, and exemplary damages from the defendant, as well as an injunction to have the posts removed and to prevent them from being republished.

JPJ finalising investigation papers for bus operator responsible for deadly UPSI accident
BUTTERWORTH, June 20 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is finalising the investigation papers for action to be taken in court against the bus company operator involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the investigation is now in the final stages before being handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on the charge recommendation. Regarding the allegation that the JPJ could not record the bus company's operator's statement because he suffered a heart attack, Aedy Fadly said his side was not informed about the matter. 'He (the bus operator) had a heart attack, it has nothing to do with the JPJ and I have not received any reports saying otherwise. We will still take action; if he goes to the hospital we will wait,' he added. In the incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were in overturned in an accident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The bus carrying 42 university students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when it collided with a Perodua Alza before overturning. — Bernama

Man found dead in vehicle outside Klang motorcycle shop, believed to be shot
SHAH ALAM, June 20 — A man was found dead inside a vehicle, believed to have been shot, in an incident outside a motorcycle shop in Meru, Klang, this afternoon. According to Bernama, Klang North district police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao said the authorities were alerted to the incident at 3.37pm, and when they arrived at the scene, they found the body of a 46-year-old local man in the driver's seat. Leaked call fallout: Thai PM meets army commander as allies threaten to walk
BANGKOK, June 20 — Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held make-up talks today with an army commander she criticised in a leaked phone call as she struggled to defuse a crisis threatening to topple her government. The daughter of controversial billionaire ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra and in office for less than a year, Paetongtarn is facing calls to quit or announce an election as anger flares over the call with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen. Her main coalition partner, the conservative Bhumjaithai party, pulled out on Wednesday, saying she had insulted the country and the army and leaving her government on the point of collapse. She suffered another blow today as reports emerged that another coalition partner was threatening to quit unless she stepped down as prime minister. The crisis has sent the Thai stock market plunging to a five-year low and comes as the kingdom struggles to fire up its sluggish economy, with US President Donald Trump's threatened trade tariffs looming. Paetongtarn, 38, visited troops in north-east Thailand today to patch things up with Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang after she was caught disparaging him as an 'opponent' during the call with Hun Sen. Boonsin commands Thai forces along the border with Cambodia, where a long-running dispute flared into deadly clashes last month, and Paetongtarn's criticism of him drew accusations of disloyalty from right-wing nationalist critics. Paetongtarn said after their meeting that the matter was settled. 'It went very well. I've spoken to the commander and there's no longer any issue,' she told reporters. The activists have called for a rally in central Bangkok on Saturday and another on June 28, although it remains to be seen whether Paetongtarn will survive that long. She took office in August last year at the head of an uneasy alliance between Pheu Thai and a group of conservative, pro-military parties whose members have spent much of the past 20 years battling against her father. Thaksin, twice elected PM, was thrown out in a military coup in 2006 and the bitter tussle between the conservative, royalist establishment and the political movement he founded has dominated Thai politics throughout that time.
