Wyndham Clark confirms that he damaged lockers at Oakmont: 'I made a mistake'

NBC Sports6 hours ago

Wyndham Clark fired a 6-under 64 Thursday in the first round of the Travelers Championship, his best round since late March.
But all most reporters wanted to talk about was last week's report that Clark damaged multiple lockers following his U.S. Open missed cut Friday at Oakmont Country Club. A photo, shared to social media by No Laying Up's Tron Carter, showed the lattice panels of two bottom lockers appearing to be kicked in.

Clark confirmed he was the culprit, though he didn't provide much aside from a quick apology.
'I've had a lot of highs and lows in my career, especially this year some lows,' Clark said. 'I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I'm very sorry for what happened.
'But I'd also like to move on, not only for myself but for Oakmont, for the USGA, and kind of focus on the rest of this year and things that come up. I still want to try to make the Ryder Cup team. I still am on the outside looking in for the FedExCup. So I'm starting to move on and focus on those things.'
Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, entered this week's final signature event of the season ranked No. 80 in FedExCup points and No. 23 in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings.

World No. 1 Scheffler shares lead at PGA Travelers Championship

American Scottie Scheffler has a share of the first-round lead in the US PGA Tour Travelers Championship in Connecticut (Andrew Redington) World number one Scottie Scheffler fired an eagle and seven birdies in an eight-under-par 62 to seize a share of the first-round lead alongside Austin Eckroat in the US PGA Tour Travelers Championship in Connecticut on Thursday. After six birdies in the first 12 holes, Scheffler tied Eckroat on eight-under with a 10-foot eagle putt at the par-five 13th. Advertisement He landed his second shot from the left rough within five feet at the par-four 15th and made that for birdie and the solo lead, and even after a bogey at the 17th the US star was pleased with a round played in tougher afternoon conditions. "I did a lot of good stuff," Scheffler said. "I felt like the conditions were pretty challenging out there, especially late in the day. I was able to hole some nice putts as well." Scheffler set up his eagle at 13 with a "really nice" three-iron. "Very rarely throughout a tournament do you hit one exactly how I intend to, and that was one of the few," Scheffler said. Advertisement The leading pair were two shots clear of a trio headlined by world number two Rory McIlroy. McIlroy, coming off a disappointing US Open run last week, had six birdies without a bogey and was joined on six-under by major winners Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark on 64. McIlroy said the more forgiving TPC River Highlands layout was "a nice tonic" after the brutal US Open setup at Oakmont, but said his focus was not so much on winning but on his game. "I just want to see some good golf and see some better shots," said McIlroy, who completed his career Grand Slam with a victory at the Masters in April. "I think if you concentrate on that and you're concentrating on your quality of golf and concentrating on just trying to play to the best of your ability, the result will take care of itself." Advertisement Eckroat had set an early target with his career-low score on the PGA Tour, crediting an adjustment to his grip with sorting out a tendency to miss left that has contributed to eight missed cuts this season. - Spieth withdraws - "It's funny," Eckroat said, "a lot of Wednesdays I've felt really good going into the tournament and then Thursday comes around and it hasn't been there. "I don't know if it's just the stress of playing in a PGA Tour event, but this one, it was nice to feel good on Wednesday and then actually take it into Thursday." Eckroat, a two-time winner on the tour, got off to a solid start with three birdies on the front nine then stormed home. He drilled a 35-foot eagle putt at the 13th, then birdied 14, 15 and 18. Advertisement Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth was forced to withdraw from the elite signature event after 13 holes as pain in his upper back and neck affected his swing. Spieth said the injury came on suddenly on Thursday morning and he hoped to play through it, but he was five-over for his round when he decided to call it quits -- the first time he has withdrawn from a PGA Tour event in 297 career starts. "It just became too much," Spieth said. US Open champion J.J. Spaun got off to a rocky start in the wake of his first major title, carding a three-over-par 73. bb/rcw

Jordan Spieth withdraws from Travelers Championship with injury; first WD in PGA Tour career

Thursday was Jordan Spieth's 297th start on the PGA Tour. It's also the first time he has withdrawn from an event. Spieth, the 13-time PGA Tour winner and 2017 champion at the Travelers Championship, withdrew Thursday during the first round. Golf Channel cameras caught Spieth dealing with some sort of injury early on in the round and receiving treatment when he made the turn. Spieth looked in discomfort on nearly every full swing, and he finally decided to WD on the 13th hole. Spieth was 5 over with five bogeys and no birdies in his 12 holes he completed. Multiple times, he dropped clubs when swinging and looked to be dealing with discomfort in his neck, shoulder and upper back area. Advertisement This season, Spieth has made 13 of 15 cuts and has eight top-25 finishes. This was his 10th start in the past 12 weeks as he chases his first win since the 2022 RBC Heritage. Wyndham Clark Breaks Silence On U.S. Open Locker Room Incident

Wyndham Clark Breaks Silence On U.S. Open Locker Room Incident originally appeared on The Spun. In-between all of the drama surrounding the Oakmont course at the U.S. Open, there was an incident in the country club's locker room involving former champion Wyndham Clark. Advertisement According to reports and some photo evidence, Clark damaged several lockers in the Oakmont locker room after missing the cut last Friday. So while he was playing at the Travelers Championship, he was naturally asked about it. Clark admitted to be the culprit and said that he apologizes for his actions. However, he stopped short of revealing what caused him to get so irate and take out his frustration on the helpless lockers. So I'm starting to move on and focus on those things.' Golf fans were a bit mixed on Clark's response to the situation. Some feel that it wasn't a proper apology because he didn't take enough responsibility for what happened, while others believe that the situation is being blown out of proportion. Advertisement "I think he's an alright dude. Making mountains out of mole hills with most of this, and people love dog-piling as if he were the new Patrick Read," one user wrote, adding a laughing emoji. "'Deeply sorry for what happened' doesn't own it. I am deeply sorry for WHAT I DID. That's owning it. No respect from me Wyndham," wrote another. "One incident like this is no big deal. A second in such a short period of time is now a trend. Dude needs to relax a little," a third wrote. "I'm very sorry for what happened.' Weasel words. It didn't just happen, YOU DID IT," replied a fourth.
