
Police kill five suspects in Durban
DURBAN - Five people have been killed in shootout with Durban police in separate incidents on Friday.

The suspects are reportedly linked to a number of robberies in the Inanda area.
The operation was carried out by the SAPS Inanda Task Team and crime intelligence. eNCA's Dasen Thathiah reported from the scene.

In yet another success story for the national anti-kidnapping task team, a wanted Mozambican kidnapper was shot dead this week during a tracing operation in Johannesburg. National police spokesperson Brig Athlende Mathe said the anti-kidnapping task team traced a Mozambican kidnapping kingpin to a block of apartments in Fourways. 'The team was tracing a kidnapped Pakistani businessman from Pretoria West. He is still in captivity and the team is still searching for [him]. One suspect was fatally wounded and upon further investigation, it was discovered that 40-year-old Mauro Mucambe Junior is a wanted kidnapping kingpin in Mozambique where he has been linked to several kidnappings. His warrant of arrest was issued by Maputo police in August 2024.' One unlicensed firearm used by the fugitive was seized, including 10 rounds of ammunition. Four cellphones and four bank cards were also seized. 'The SAPS has full faith and confidence in the work of the anti-kidnapping task team to rescue the kidnapped businessman. Since January 2024, the team has arrested more than 170 criminals involved in kidnappings for ransom. More than R1.2m has been recovered. More than 100 victims were rescued mainly in Gauteng and more than 40 vehicles used in kidnapping crimes were seized by the team. 'The anti-kidnapping task team recently registered a breakthrough in the Olorato Mongale murder case where they led the tracing operation of Philangenkosi Makhanya. The search is still on for Bongani Mthimkhulu,' Mathe said.

Police shoot five armed suspects in Inanda during violent crime crackdown
Five armed suspects were shot dead during separate operations in Inanda, north of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Image: File KwaZulu-Natal police have killed five suspects in two separate incidents in the Inanda township north of Durban on Friday. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda stated that in both incidents, police responded to shots fired at them by the armed suspects. Netshiunda said in the first incident, police operationalised intelligence about the whereabouts of a wanted suspect in the area. They then managed to corner the suspect along the Etafuleni main road. 'The suspect opened fire at police officers, and a shootout ensued. During the shootout, the suspect, who was wanted for murder, three counts of attempted murder, and for business robbery, was shot and fatally wounded,' said Netshiunda. Next Stay Close ✕ Detailing the events that unfolded in the second incident, Netshiunda said police followed up on intelligence about suspects who were wanted for murder, attempted murder, and house robberies in and around Inanda. He said the police then pounced on the suspects at the cottages on Dr Langalibalele Road in Inanda. According to Netshiunda, when the suspects saw the police, they started shooting at them, and the officers retaliated. 'After the shootout, four suspects were found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds,' he said. Three firearms, whose serial numbers had been filed off, were found in the possession of the suspects, he added. No police officer was injured during either of the shootout incidents.
