America's Cup-winning skipper Burling joins Luna Rossa after Team NZ split

June 20 (Reuters) - Three-times America's Cup winning helmsman Peter Burling has joined Italian team Luna Rossa after leaving New Zealand ahead of the 2027 edition of sailing's most prestigious competition, the team announced on Friday.
Italy will host the America's Cup for the first time in 2027, with Naples set to stage the 38th edition. Burling, 34, links up with the Italians just two months after ending his long-standing relationship with defenders New Zealand, with whom he won the Cup in 2017 and retained it in 2021 and 2024.
Burling joined Team NZ after winning gold and silver medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics sailing with teammate Blair Tuke. The former New Zealand skipper will support both the sailing operations and technical development at Luna Rossa as they prepare for their latest Cup campaign.
In addition to his three Olympic medals Burling also has six world titles in the 49er class, and is regarded as one of the sport's leading talents.
"I've always loved racing against Luna Rossa and now to join this iconic team is a real honour. The innovation and competitiveness they bring to the Cup has always inspired me," Burling said in a statement.
"I'm grateful for the warm welcome and I'm looking forward to working hard alongside a world-class team, doing my part to help win Luna Rossa's first America's Cup."
CEO of Luna Rossa Max Sirena said, "Even though his exact role has yet to be defined, he will certainly be part of the sailing team, reinforcing Luna Rossa's core leadership group and contributing to key areas of our development program.
"Peter brings tremendous sporting, technical, and personal value."

He had reportedly agreed personal terms with Napoli, but United's asking fee was believed to be too high for the Italian champions. If Sancho were to complete a move to Napoli, he would line up under former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and alongside a host of former Premier League players. Former United midfielder Scott McTominay was named Serie A player of the season while ex-United striker Romelu Lukaku and Billy Gilmour also starred as Napoli won just their second league title in 35 years. Despite his past success in Germany, Dortmund are not keen on offering him a route out of Manchester. Last week Dortmund's sporting director Sebastie Kehl ruled out a move. Italian giants Juventus are also interested in signing Sancho, who is set to leave Old Trafford 'Of course, there's always some kind of contact with Jadon because of the long history we share, but at the moment, Jadon is not a topic for us,' he said. Sancho is reportedly set to be banished from United's pre-season tour to the US if he hasn't found a new club by then. Hailing from Tauranga, New Zealand, Doleman spent a significant part of his youth in the Philippines and China, starting his refereeing career while still a student. It occurred just prior to the interval in the Super Rugby tie between Melbourne Rebels and Savea's Hurricanes, when a massive scuffle erupted. It featured Dane Coles and Rebels second-rower Josh Canham going head-to-head, with both sides jumping in to calm the commotion. ‌ In the midst of the fracas, Savea forcefully knocked Rebels fly-half Carter Gordon to the ground, leading to a heated verbal exchange after which Gordon chose to walk away. Doleman, after conferring with his assistant referees Paul Williams and Graham Cooper, determined that while the initial tussle between Canham and Coles was nothing more than "push and shove", it was Savea who had indeed intensified the confrontation. Savea, who had already been penalised for another infringement, received a yellow card for his actions. He attracted ironic applause from Rebels scrum-half Ryan Louwrens as he left the field, triggering an incensed reaction from the back-rower, who gestured towards Louwrens with a throat-slitting motion. ‌ The commentary team was visibly shocked by Savea's gesture, and Doleman's microphone caught someone exclaiming: "He's threatening to f*****g kill him, he's threatening to kill him." Savea offered an apology post-match, conceding that his behaviour was not befitting for younger spectators. "I can understand the fans are furious with the gesture that I made," Savea explained to Sky Sports. "It's just a heat of the moment kind of thing, you know.
