"Hope Prayers For Peace Will Be Answered": Farooq Abdullah Visits Vaishno Devi

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday returned to Srinagar by the recently launched Vande Bharat Express after an overnight stay at the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra.
"Had a great darshan and I am hopeful that all our prayers for peace, progress and brotherhood at the shrine will be answered so that we can move forward and our country also marches ahead and we become part of its development trajectory," the former chief minister told reporters on his return.
The 87-year-old Abdullah took his maiden ride in the Vande Bharat Express, which connects Kashmir to the rest of the country, to reach Katra on Tuesday. He stayed at the sanctum sanctorum overnight and took part in special prayers at the shrine.
He was accompanied by his grandsons Zamir and Zahid, Jammu and Kashmir minister Satish Sharma, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and several NC legislators, including chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq.
Asked about his overnight stay at the shrine, Abdullah said, "I felt very happy." "I came here by train and this service is a new beginning for us. This will not only benefit the pilgrims coming to visit Mata but also prove beneficial for the pilgrims intending to visit the Amarnath cave shrine and they will also come in large numbers. This will benefit tourism in J&K," he added.
Mr Abdullah said this train is a blessing for Jammu and Kashmir which will boost trade and tourism.
"The journey was very good. You can see that tourists are also coming. This train is a blessing. It will increase tourism and trade. Our fruits can go outside easily and our people can now travel to any part of India comfortably.
"This was a dream which I have seen become a reality in my life," the former chief minister told reporters at the Srinagar railway station.

Talking to PTI at the shrine late on Tuesday night, minister Sharma said Abdullah expressed his desire to visit the Vaishno Devi shrine during his visit to Mela Kheer Bhawani in Ganderbal on June 3.
"We had darshan thrice after reaching this holy town (Katra), which is a great blessing for us... Abdullah walked two to three kilometres to reach the court and we prayed for J&K to get back its lost glory. J&K is India's crown and we want to reach that height again," he said.
The minister said they prayed for India's progress at the global level.
Mr Sharma described the trip as "historic" and said they will remember it for eternity.
He said they also prayed for the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and shelling by Pakistan.
"They (Pakistanis) will never succeed in their nefarious designs. Terrorism is an industry but our brave forces gave them a befitting reply. They will meet the same fate in future if they try to do any mischief," the minister said.
NC provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta said Abdullah's visit has sent a positive message across the country and "we are hopeful that the tourism industry, which has suffered a major setback in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, will be back on track soon".
"Abdullah's overnight stay at the shrine saw an immediate increase in the footfall of pilgrims. We are hopeful that this momentum will further increase in the coming days," he said.
Gupta said the team attended all the special prayers and all its members, except Abdullah, also visited Bhairon Ghati to offer prayers.

BJP worker found dead in Bengal's Hooghly, party alleges ‘political murder'
A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, Sheikh Bakibulla, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his house at Goghat in Hooghly district in West Bengal on Saturday (June 21, 2025). Mr. Bakibulla was reportedly found hanging in his house this morning. The BJP has alleged that it was a 'political murder'. The police sent the body for post-mortem on Saturday and initiated an investigation. 'Out of pain and misery, he joined the BJP. When he was in the CPI(M), the Trinamool (ruling Trinamool Congress) was after his life. They had assaulted him multiple times in the past,' Mr. Abdullah said on Saturday after his son's body was discovered. Mr. Bakibulla's bereaved widow said that her husband had gone to bed along with her the previous night, and that she was unaware of anything unusual happening until morning. 'His hands were tied, and there was blood at the spot. It is clear that this is a murder. We have a clear demand for the police administration — immediately send the body for post-mortem and find out who did it. This cannot be covered up,' Biman Ghosh, the BJP MLA of Hooghly's Pursurah, said. The saffron party also took to X to accuse 'TMC-backed goons' of being behind Mr. Bakibullah's death. 'Sheikh Bakibulla, a BJP worker from Goghat, was hanged with hands tied. TMC-backed goons did it. No arrest. No action. This is not just a murder, this is targeted political violence in Bengal under Mamata Banerjee,' the post by BJP West Bengal read. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress denied the allegations and accused the BJP of 'adding political colour' to the tragedy. In other developments, at least two people died and several were injured in a crude bomb explosion in the Labpur police station area of West Bengal's Birbhum district on Saturday.

Punjab to amend Beggary Act to make stricter enforcement
Agency: PTI Chandigarh, Jun 21 (PTI) Punjab Women and Child Development Minister Baljit Kaur on Saturday said the government will make amendments to the Beggary Act to launch a stricter crackdown on racketeers. The amendments to the Punjab Prevention of Beggary Act, 1971, will carry heavy penalties against racketeers, guardians, or parents found forcing children to beg at traffic lights and other intersections, she said. Kaur said the state will form special teams to identify and act against those operating these rackets and rescue and rehabilitate children. The minister said that since July 2024, under the Jeevanjot project, 286 children have been rescued. She also said that this year, a pilot project 'Smile' will be launched in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, SAS Nagar, and Bathinda. Under the initiative, child beggars will be identified, and their families will be tracked through DNA tests, she said. Nepal govt thanks S Jaishankar for India's ‘swift' efforts in evacuating Nepali nationals from war-hit Iran
Nepal's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Arzu Rana Deuba, on Saturday thanked India for its 'swift assistance in helping to evacuate Nepali nationals from Iran'. Tagging Union Minister of External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar, Deuba said that India's support in Nepal's evacuation efforts is a 'reflection of strength of Nepal-India ties'. India on June 18 announced the launch of 'Operation Sindhu' to evacuate its nationals from Iran after its conflict with Israel, which has entered its second week, showed no sign of letting up. The Indian Embassy in Iran on Saturday said that its evacuation efforts will also cover Nepal and Sri Lanka. In a post on X, the Embassy said, 'On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy's evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka.' "The citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka may urgently reach out to the Embassy, either on the Telegram channel or over the emergency contact numbers. 989010144557; 989128109115; 989128109109," it added. A Mahan Air evacuation flight carrying 256 Indian students, the majority from the Kashmir valley, landed safely at the Delhi airport on Saturday, bringing much-needed relief to their anxious families. According to a PTI report, the students, many of whom were stranded in Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, appeared visibly exhausted but relieved after enduring days of fear and uncertainty in the conflict zone. "Thanks to the Government of India for its efforts and timely coordination with Iranian authorities. We remain committed to ensuring the safe evacuation of all remaining students, especially those from vulnerable and remote regions," the Jammu and Kashmir Students' Association said in a statement. The association also confirmed that another evacuation flight carrying Indian students is expected to arrive in the national capital around 11:30 pm. This was the second flight bringing back Indians from Iran within 24 hours under Operation Sindhu. Another flight from Iran's Mashhad, with 290 Indian students, mostly from Jammu and Kashmir landed in Delhi late on Friday night, the report added. The Indian authorities, in coordination with their Iranian counterparts, facilitated the movement of stranded students from Tehran to Mashhad before boarding. Iran also opened its airspace in a special gesture to support the evacuation. In all, nearly 1,000 Indian nationals are being brought home through a series of special flights. On Thursday, 110 students were flown out via Armenia and Doha. Two additional flights, including one from Turkmenistan's capital Ashgabat (expected arrival around 3 am on Sunday), are also scheduled, a PTI report said.
